from the unsupervised luggage of sleeping passengers. Their strategy exploited long-duration, high-traffic international flights, making it harder to notice the thefts.
The accused, Benlai Pan, 30, a resident of Hong Kong, was apprehended after Air India's security and vigilance team alerted Delhi Police on May 14 about suspicious activity on the airline's flight AI-315 from Hong Kong to New Delhi. Passengers had complained about theft during the flight.
Police teams met Air India staff and passengers at Indira Gandhi International Airport's Terminal 3 arrival hall. Passenger Prabhat Verma told the cops that the cabin crew warned him of suspicious movements near his overhead baggage. Upon inspection, he discovered his credit card was missing and noticed a suspicious individual, later identified as Benlai, sitting in a seat not assigned to him. The missing card was found nearby.
Another passenger, Prashi, too found her mother's debit card missing. Another vigilant passenger provided video footage showing Benlai opening cabin baggage items and inspecting the contents.
Benlai was accompanied by three other Chinese nationals — Meng Guangyang, 51, Chang Mang, 42, and Liu Jie, 45. The authorities are liaising with the embassies concerned to verify their backgrounds and determine whether they were involved in similar crimes worldwide.

During interrogation, Benlai confessed to being part of a sophisticated syndicate targeting transit flights. The group's strategy involved booking long transit flights to access unsupervised cabin luggage over extended periods. They sat in different section of the aircraft avoid being identified as a coordinated group, thus minimising the risk of being noticed. Their primary tactic was to target sleeping passengers, carefully opening bags to steal high-value items like cash, electronics and credit cards.
When cards were stolen, the group used them and immediately discarded them to make detection harder.
The syndicate specifically targeted high-traffic international routes, exploiting long-duration flights where passengers were fatigued and less vigilant. This allowed them to carry out thefts with relative ease, moving unnoticed in crowded cabins.
A credit card, several bags, wallets and electronics were recovered from the men and they are under further scrutiny.
Usha Rangnani, additional CP (IGI), said, "Benlai has been arrested, while the involvement of his three associates are being investigated. Travel data over the past 12 months is being analysed to connect the group with similar unsolved in-flight thefts." Alerts have been issued to immigration and airport authorities across the country and global enforcement agencies have been contacted to determine whether this group is a part of a larger

‘Buying foreign products aids terrorism': Yogi urges spending on swadeshi
Agra: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath during a public meeting in Aligarh on Tuesday appealed to the gathering to promote swadeshi (indigenous) products, especially during festivals and celebrations, cautioning that money spent on foreign goods could end up in the hands of terrorists and anti-national forces. "If we buy local products, the money goes to our artisans and craftsmen, strengthening the nation. But if it goes abroad, it can be used for terrorism, conversion, and creating anarchy," he said, urging people to be mindful while making purchases. Earlier in the day, the CM had held a meeting with public representatives from the Aligarh division. He noted that before 2017, markets in UP were flooded with Chinese goods, but the one district one product (ODOP) scheme introduced in the state in 2018 brought local products to the forefront, generating jobs and boosting artisan livelihoods. Emphasising on the economic potential of local industries, including Aligarh's lock-making sector, Yogi said, "When our artisans work with dedication, their earnings bring prosperity not only to their families but also to the wider community. This prosperity strengthens the market and contributes to the nation's development. When we purchase foreign-made products, its profit goes into foreign hands; these funds may be used for terrorism, conversion, love jihad, and Naxal activities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like I Lost My Passport in Rome. "Apart from the govt and administration, the participation of the public is essential in maintaining cleanliness. If we stop throwing garbage onto roads and drains, cleanliness will be maintained automatically." The CM also launched 186 development projects worth Rs 957 crore during a public rally held at Numaish Maidan in Aligarh. He laid the foundation for 103 projects worth Rs 500 crore and inaugurated 83 completed projects worth Rs 457 crore. MP chain snatching case: Over 1,500 CCTV cameras scanned, 200 quizzed but police yet trace suspect, scooter
A man in his early 20s, wearing a colourful full sleeve T-shirt and a helmet, is seen riding a black Suzuki 125 scooter in CCTV camera footage. This was just after he allegedly snatched a gold chain from Congress MP R Sudha, while she was on a morning walk on the streets of Chanakyapuri in the high-security Lutyens' Delhi on Monday. The suspect, who was seen driving at a very high speed both before and after he targeted the MP, then flees towards South Delhi's Moti Bagh. Police suspect he came from the same direction before he committed the crime. According to sources, the Delhi Police has so far scanned over 1,500 CCTV cameras – including 900 installed around embassies and areas near the incident spot – to identify the suspect. Police teams have also searched over 25 localities, including jhuggi jhopri clusters at Chanakyapuri, Sarojini Nagar, and R K Puram. But to no avail. A source said the CCTV camera footage is not clear enough to identify his face and the scooter's registration number. The police are taking the help of a face recognition system and other technical tools to identify the accused and the vehicle registration number, the source added. A senior officer said 24 teams from the New Delhi district police, Crime Branch, Special Cell, and Special Staff are working to apprehend the accused. According to CCTV footage, as soon as the suspect crossed the railway bridge while coming from Moti Bagh, he took the Flag Pole roundabout from Shantipath and turned onto Niti Marg, where gates 3 and 4 of the Poland Embassy are located. There, he allegedly spotted Sudha and Rajya Sabha MP Rajathi Salma walking along the roadside, snatched Sudha's gold chain, and sped away on his scooter. Over 200 people, including many with previous criminal records, as well as snatchers recently released from jail or out on bail, have been questioned, said police. Police said that Chanakyapuri, home to several embassies and high commissions, has 20 'bad characters' on record at the local police station, with the majority known to be involved in bootlegging and thefts. Five of them are currently active, said an officer. Hours after the incident, the district police chief had directed all police stations in New Delhi district to conduct early morning patrols and picket checks in Chanakyapuri and nearby areas, another officer added. Earlier this year, a similar snatching incident had taken place in Chanakyapuri, which was cracked by the police within a few hours. 'The accused, who was on a scooter, had chased a woman pillion rider on another scooter and snatched her chain. The accused was arrested from Sarojini Nagar and the chain was also recovered,' a source said.

Six aircraft engine shutdown incidents and three May Day Call reported in India, says Union minister Murlidhar Mohol
India's Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, on Tuesday, 5 August 2025, said that in the year 2025, there have been a total of six aircraft engine shutdown incidents along with three incidents of mayday calls in the nation, reported the news agency PTI. "During 2025, from January to July (till date), a total of 06 incidents of engine shutdown and a total of 03 incidents of May Day calls have been reported," the Minister said in a written response to the Lok Sabha, as per the news report. The Minister also said that there have been two cases of engine shutdown, each involving IndiGo and SpiceJet, while one incident involved Air India and another with Alliance Air. The three incidents involving the Mayday calls also included the Air India crash of the AI 171 aircraft on 12 June 2025. The aircraft was headed towards London Gatwick Airport from India's Ahmedabad Airport. Moments after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport, the aircraft crashed into a nearby building. The other two mayday calls were from IndiGo and Air India Express, according to the agency report. A Mayday call is a globally recognised signal of distress, mostly used in aviation or maritime communications. The call sign is used in a life-threatening situation, like a potential aircraft crash. In aviation, a pilot repeats the Mayday call three times in a row to inform the air traffic controller (ATC) of the nearest airbase or airport in serious need of help. According to the agency report, the Union Minister of State of Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, also stated that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's initial report on the Air India crash of 12 June 2025, which was published based on factual information, does not contain any conclusion about the incident and that the investigations are still underway. "Every aspect is being looked into for determining the probable cause(s)/contributory factor(s) leading to the accident," said Mohol, responding to a query on whether the government will investigate the crash from a sabotage angle.
