Suspect arrested for ‘senseless' murder of beloved Riverside father

Yahoo27-03-2025
Officers arrested a man suspected of killing a beloved Riverside father without provocation, police announced Thursday.
According to the Riverside Police Department, it was around 10:10 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, when officers responded to reports of a shooting near Hole and Mitchell Avenues in the La Sierra neighborhood.
Officers arrived to find an unresponsive victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics attempted to treat the victim at the scene before taking him to a local hospital where, despite life-saving efforts, officials said he died a short time later.
The victim has been identified as 41-year-old David Abarca, according to RPD.
'Abarca leaves behind a 10-year-old son and had been a dedicated employee at Rodrigo's Mexican Grill in Riverside for nearly 25 years,' the department said in a statement.
According to the preliminary investigation, Abarca had stayed late at work that night and missed his usual ride – so he began walking home.
Detectives said that as Abarca neared Hole and Mitchell Avenues, the suspect approached him and suddenly shot him without provocation. Officials have found no indication that the two knew each other.
After the shooting, a neighbor told detectives they saw the suspect run through a yard and discard the handgun.
Officers then quickly found and detained the suspect, identified as Andre Devin Thomas, 23, of Riverside. Police also recovered the discarded gun nearby.
Thomas was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for murder, and he is being held on a $1 million bail.
'This was a senseless act of violence that took the life of a hardworking father, and our hearts go out to Mr. Abarca's family and loved ones,' said Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez. 'I commend our officers for their swift response in capturing the suspect, and our detectives and forensic specialists for their diligent work. We remain committed to seeking justice for Mr. Abarca.'
The department said no further details are available, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Detective Anthony Watkins at 951-353-7105 or AWatkins@RiversideCA.gov, or Detective Richard Glover at 951-353-7134 or RGlover@RiversideCA.gov.
Police added that the Abarca family launched a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses.

Sentencing of Niagara man for fatal 2023 hit-and-run may be delayed due to new impaired boating charges

The sentencing of a Niagara man for the 2023 hit-and-run death of an 84-year-old cyclist may have to be postponed as the offender was recently arrested following an incident in cottage country that left a swimmer with life-threatening injuries, court heard Wednesday. Richard Moore, 39, was scheduled to appear in Superior Court of Justice in St. Catharines to set a date for Judge Michael Bordin to deliver judgment on a charge of failing to stop at an accident causing death in relation to the Niagara-on-the-Lake hit-and-run death of 84-year-old Nestor Chemerika. Moore did not attend court. He was arrested by Ontario Provincial Police on Saturday after a 22-year-old swimmer suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by a boat in Muskoka Lakes Township. Moore now faces charges of impaired operation causing bodily harm, refusing to provide a breath sample, failing to stop at an accident causing bodily harm and failing to comply with a release order. He remains in custody and is expected to appear in a Bracebridge courtroom on Monday. Ontario Provincial Police said emergency responders were called to Skeleton Lake after numerous callers reported a boating collision. The victim was rushed to a local hospital then taken by helicopter to a Toronto hospital with life-threatening injuries. In court Wednesday, defence lawyer Jeffrey Manishen told Judge Amy Ohler that sentencing on the Niagara matter may have to be delayed. 'There has been a very specific personal development in the circumstances of Mr. Moore with the result that I'm going to seek his instructions on whether as the result of that he wishes me to make further submissions on sentence,' he said. Moore previously pleaded guilty to the Niagara charge and the judge had reserved his decision on sentence, which can range from a fine to life in prison. The Crown is seeking a custodial term, while the defence advocated for a conditional sentence, also known as house arrest. 'As a result of these further developments, I wish to seek my client's instructions to see what he'd like do about them and whether that would necessitate a further submission,' Manishen said Wednesday. The local matter was adjourned until August. While the OPP did not name the victim of the boating incident, a number of social media posts have identified him as Austin Anderson. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the young man's family. Almost $16,500 had been raised as of Wednesday afternoon. An updated statement posted on the page Monday said the Anderson family is grateful for the support they have received since the incident. 'At this stage in Austin's recovery, doctors expect him to remain in a coma for at least two more weeks to allow his body the time it needs to rest and heal from this horrible accident,' the statement said. 'This next phase will require patience, strength and continued support.' Details of the Niagara-on-the-Lake fatality were revealed when Moore pleaded guilty in June. On July 13, 2023, court heard, a Niagara Regional Police officer on routine patrol on East and West Line near Niagara Street spotted a single running shoe and vehicle debris in the middle of the road. He pulled over to investigate and made a horrific discovery — in a nearby irrigation ditch was a mangled bicycle and the critically injured cyclist. Chemerika, a retired GM worker, was airlifted to a Hamilton hospital. He died from his injuries on July 25, 2023. Moore fled the scene. A police investigation determined Moore's pickup truck had struck the octogenarian from behind. Moore did not stop or render aid to the injured man, instead he fled the scene. Among the roadway debris at the site was a damaged passenger-side mirror. Police later located a GMC Sierra in the driveway of a Niagara Falls home. Its passenger-side mirror had recently been replaced. Moore was arrested three months later. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. There was a problem with the recaptcha. Fundraiser for eight-year-old girl who was assaulted

Pikwakanagan – In the aftermath of the tragic assault on an eight-year-old Quadeville girl, many people from neighbouring communities have rallied to help her family as they face unknown costs in her journey to recovery. The little girl suffered horrific injuries in a June 23 attack which at first were believed to have been carried out by a wild animal, but after two weeks of an exhaustive and extensive police investigation, a youth from the small hamlet was arrested and charged with attempted murder and sexual assault with a weapon. Quadeville, located in the Madawaska Valley Highlands between Foymount and Palmer Rapids, is a quiet little community made up of less than 75 people. Everybody knows each other and so both the identity of the victim and the teenage boy who was arrested July 7 is common knowledge. The little girl went missing early Monday evening, June 23. When she could not be located, Ontario Provincial Police were notified and together with members of the Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan Township Fire Department and locals, an extensive search of the area was conducted. She was found in the early morning hours of June 24, clinging to life in an old sawmill in the community, rushed to hospital in Ottawa where she is slowly recovering from serious injuries to her neck and throat. A long recovery period is expected. Many believe it was a miracle she survived. People from neighbouring communities and beyond have been reaching out to help the little girl and her family who moved to the community a few years ago. The victim, her two sisters and a brother, are being raised by an aunt and uncle. GoFundMe fundraisers have been launched, community dinners have been held and people have been making donations to the pastor of the Pentecostal Church in the community, Joe Fiorentino. Nicole Bernard of Pikwakanagan has a heart of gold and is always ready to help out whenever and wherever she can. She has organized a raffle for a basket of gift cards and gifts valued at about $500 which will be given away in a draw on Monday, August 4. To support the draw, 100 squares are being sold at $25 each with all proceeds going to the victim. When all squares are sold, it will raise $2,500. In addition, several businesses and individuals have and continue to donate money to the effort, and it is hoped that at least $5,000 will be raised. Ms. Bernard does not know the victim or her family, but she knows the young boy charged and his parents. She said the incident has caused anger in the community, but she also believes cooler heads will prevail as time passes. 'The Ottawa Valley, like I don't think people realize how close we actually are,' she said, adding she has known the accused's parents since before he was born. 'Really, if you are the parent, it doesn't mean that you screwed up the kid. It means that something has gone wrong somewhere.' The basket contains a beautiful wood carving of three wolves. Ms. Bernard said it aptly represents the strength of the girl. 'The wolf is a powerful animal,' she said. 'And she is a strong little girl.' Ms. Bernard was emotional when asked why she is doing her bit to help out. 'This girl needs help. She's going to go through a lot of …..,' she said fighting back tears. 'I have three granddaughters and my oldest is a year younger than this little girl and so it pulls at my heart strings. 'But even far more than that, for us we've spent a lot of time in Quadeville playing sports like ball and broomball. When the (winter) carnivals were on, we were there to support each other. They have been here to Pikwakanagan, to Eganville, and all over. We're from the Ottawa Valley and so we look after each other.' This is a story that should appeal to everyone, she said, because it could have been their child. 'This little girl has a long road ahead of her and I have nick-named her Little Warrior,' she said. 'She matters. Every child matters. Every person matters. If we just sit back and do nothing, that's even more sad than what took place.' Ms. Bernard realizes many people are struggling financially due to the high cost of living, and she is quite happy to accept even small donations because every dollar counts. 'It's going to go directly to her, and we want to get her help,' she said. 'They are a sister community to the Ottawa Valley. We all stick together, because together we can do a lot. One person can't do much on their own.' It's easy to support the fundraiser. If you are driving around the Golden Lake area, simply pull into the drive-up window at Golden Lake Smoke Shop, hand Ms. Bernard or whoever might be working at the time your $25 and you will have your name and phone number written in one of the spaces. If you want to contribute more than the $25 entry, whatever amount you give will be added to the fund. You can also send your money by e-transfer to: brownealyssa18@ (please put For Maya' in the message line, and a space will be assigned to you. Please include your name and phone number. For more information, Ms. Bernard can be reached at 613-635-3070. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. There was a problem with the recaptcha. Please try again. 6-year-old calls 911 to help mom after two pit bulls attacked: ‘She definitely saved her mom's life'

A six-year-old Texas girl has been hailed a hero after calling 911 and saving her mother's life following a terrifying attack by two pit bulls. Lindsay Stroup and her daughter, Lily Goligowski, were dog sitting for a friend at their Denison home Thursday when the dogs began attacking each other around 7:30 a.m., KXII reported. The dogs, both pit bulls, then began to target Stroup in their vicious attack. '[Lily's] response to what was going on with her mother was to take the cell phone, lock herself in the bathroom and dial 911,' her father, Thomas Goligowski, told the station. 'She definitely saved her mom's life,' he said. Police arrived at the home within minutes of receiving the 911 call. As the officers got out of their car, the dogs began to attack them as well. The officers shot both of the dogs, killing one of them, before administering life-saving care to Stroup, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition. While the attack unfolded in front of Stroup's young daughter, she has remained strong – even reassuring her father that her mother would be alright. 'She witnessed her mother on the ground, rolling around, being attacked by multiple dogs with wounds and things of that nature,' Goligowski said. 'It's a very intense situation for my family.' The dad continued: 'She's told me: 'Dad, Mom's going to be OK. I know Mom's going to be OK. Don't be sad, Dad. She's going to be fine.' Stroup has undergone several surgeries, but still has a lengthy hospital stay ahead of her, according to a GoFundMe set up by the family to help cover the medical expenses. In an update shared Sunday, the family said Stroup was taken off propofol, a sedative, and has opened her eyes. 'She is going to receive another unit of blood but is improving,' the update noted. The fundraiser had received a slightly more than its $7,000, out of a $9,000 goal. Police said that Animal Services captured the second dog involved in the attack. The investigation into the attack continues. 'Even if you think you know these animals, they can still flip a switch without you even being aware of that switch being inside of them,' Goligowski said.
