Malaysia mulls anti-scalping law after Coldplay concert chaos, ID checks among proposed measures
Fahmi disclosed that his deputy, Teo Nie Ching, recently held discussions with stakeholders, including local event ticketing companies and the Association of Live Event Organisers (ALIFE), on proposed measures targeting scalping explicitly for live events held locally.
'Right now, there are active discussions between the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) and the Communications Ministry,' Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil told Malay Mail when asked for updates on the proposed legislation.
The effort was spurred by past frustrations like the rampant ticket scalping during Coldplay's 2023 Malaysian concert.
Ticket scalpers have long exploited fans' desperation for profit, leading to a surge in scalping incidents for popular concerts in recent years, and Malaysia is no exception.
As Malaysian law does not explicitly banning ticket scalping, legal action against scalpers has been limited. Hence, the resale of tickets above face value is still technically legal.
Some of these measures, Fahmi explained, include ID verification, which would require ticket holders to present the same identification document used at the time of purchase to match the name printed on the ticket.
'This was what happened in Indonesia... I would not say it is foolproof, but it has assisted in reducing some of these scalping activities,' he remarked.
'We will await a follow-up discussion with ALIFE, as they need to discuss with their association members and revert to us in the coming weeks,' Fahmi said, when asked if there was a definite timeline for the Bill to tabled in Parliament.

‘We don't want an emperor': Brazil's Lula speaks up as Brics silent on tariffs
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva rebuked US President Donald Trump for his latest tariff threat against Brics nations on Monday, while the bloc as a whole offered no public response to what critics called an alarming act of economic intimidation. 'I don't think it's very responsible and serious for a president ... of a country the size of the US to threaten the world over the internet – it's not right,' Lula said during a news conference at the conclusion of the Brics leaders' summit in Rio de Janeiro. He said the members of the group of emerging economies were 'sovereign countries' and noted that other nations had the same right to levy taxes as Washington. 'The world has changed. We don't want an emperor,' Lula added. 'Frankly, there are other things and other ways for the president ... to talk to other countries. People need to understand that respect is good – we like to give it, and we like to get it in return,' he said. The Brazilian president was reacting to comments Trump made on Sunday that he would impose an additional 10 per cent tariffs on imports from Brics members and aligned countries that pursue what he called the group's 'anti-American policies'. Brics had earlier issued a leaders' declaration condemning tariffs, unilateralism and protectionism without naming the US. Lula said that Trump's threats were not discussed during the Brics meetings, but contended that some critics had been rattled by the bloc's growing success in uniting the Global South and amplifying its voice on the world stage. In Washington on Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Trump was 'closely monitoring' the Brics summit. However, she said, he did not 'perceive these countries as growing stronger'. 'He just perceives them as trying to undermine the United States' interests. 'And that's not OK with him, no matter how strong or weak a country is,' Leavitt added. As an organisation, Brics did not issue any official response to Trump's comments. But some member nations acknowledged them. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Sunday that Trump's latest statement on Brics had been 'noticed', Russia's Tass reported. Beijing also reacted to Trump's comments, with Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning saying on Monday that Brics 'is not a bloc for confrontation, nor does it target any country'. 'As for the US tariff hikes, China has made its position clear more than once,' she added. 'Trade war and tariff war have no winners, and protectionism leads nowhere.' Trump did not specify which policy or language in the declaration he considered anti-American. In January, shortly after returning to the White House, he declared that Brics was 'dead' and claimed no one wanted to join the bloc. He also threatened 100 per cent tariffs against Brics members over the group's push for 'de-dollarisation' and use of local currencies in internal trade. On Sunday, the Brics leaders' declaration called for Israeli troops to withdraw from Gaza on the eve of Trump's scheduled meeting on Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the White House. Although the document condemned recent Israeli and US military strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities as a 'violation of international law', it did not explicitly name either country. Iran became a full Brics member in January. Brics, an acronym denoting the earliest members Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has since added Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates to its group of emerging economies. Brics members including India, China and Indonesia are currently engaged in trade negotiations with the Trump administration. Last week, Vietnam, a Brics partner country, reached a trade deal with the US. On Monday, Lula participated in a new group photograph that, in addition to 10 Brics full members, included UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and the presidents of Chile, Uruguay, Uganda and Bolivia. Gustavo de Carvalho of the South African Institute of International Affairs in Johannesburg did not expect any 'war of words' between Brics and Trump unless the US takes direct action toward bloc members and partner countries. He said that many Brics members preferred 'not to be seen as an anti-Western type of group, but rather as a representative of a non-Western group'. He contended that Trump's threats would not deter new countries from joining the bloc – unless those threats materialise. Farwa Aamer of Asia Society in New York, noting long-standing divisions within Brics, said that while existing members were unlikely to leave Brics, Trump's posture 'could deter some Global South countries from joining any time soon, especially those looking to maintain stable ties with the US'. 'Given those dynamics, we're more likely to see a muted or fragmented response, if any. Most will likely adopt a wait-and-see approach rather than escalate tensions, especially with uncertainty around the trade and economic landscape,' she said. Also on Monday, the US said that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would travel to Malaysia, a Brics partner country, from Tuesday to Saturday, to take part in the Asean-United States Post-Ministerial Conference, the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting and the Asean Regional Forum Foreign Ministers' Meeting. Speaking at the Brics business forum last week, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged Brics countries to learn from Asean on how to challenge Western dominance. Anwar said that the Global South should speak 'from a position of strength' in international matters and he encouraged the bloc to continue discussions on reducing its dependence on the US dollar as a reserve currency. 'Of course, we're not talking about de-dollarisation, because there's a long way to go, but at least we try – Malaysia with Indonesia, Malaysia with Thailand, and together with China – trying to use our own local currency,' he added. Inflation likely to be under control
PETALING JAYA: Bank Negara Malaysia has reaffirmed that the impact of current and upcoming domestic policy reforms on inflation is expected to remain manageable – a view in line with analysts' estimates. OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Bhd global markets research & strategy senior Asean economist Lavanya Venkateswaran said even if the planned rationalisation of RON95 fuel takes effect in October 2025, with a potential price increase of 20–25%, the adjustment is projected to add only 0.5 percentage points to headline inflation, bringing it to around 2.0% for the year. She said this moderate level suggests that inflation will stay within a range that allows BNM to maintain a policy stance supportive of economic growth. 'Our GDP forecast for 2025 stands at 3.9% year-on-year, but we expect growth to slow sharply in the first half of the year to 3.6% from 4.3% if the 25% US tariffs are implemented on August 1 without any exemptions. 'We expect this to weigh on domestic demand, which has remained strong in the first half of 2025. 'With inflation likely to stay under control despite subsidy reforms and slower growth, we forecast that BNM will cut the policy rate by another 25 basis points – either at the Sept 4 or Nov 6 meeting – bringing it down to 2.50% by the end of 2025,' Lavanya said in a report. Meanwhile, BNM has stated that it will continue to take proactive steps to support the country's economic momentum as global growth shows signs of steady expansion. At its latest meeting, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to cut the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) by 25 basis points to 2.75% yesterday, aiming to create a more supportive monetary environment. The ceiling and floor rates of the OPR corridor have also been adjusted to 3.00% and 2.50% respectively. The central bank said the decision reflects an effort to sustain domestic economic resilience, in line with global trends showing continued growth – largely driven by strong consumer spending and, to some extent, early demand brought forward by businesses. Further, BNM also noted that the global growth outlook would remain supported by positive labour market conditions, less restrictive monetary policy, and fiscal stimulus. This outlook is weighed down by uncertainties surrounding tariff developments, as well as geopolitical tensions. Increased volatility in global financial markets and commodity prices could also result from these uncertainties. For Malaysia, BNM said the latest developments point towards continued growth in economic activity in the second quarter, underpinned by sustained domestic demand and export growth. Moving forward, the central bank expects resilient domestic demand to support growth. Employment and wage growth, particularly within domestic-oriented sectors, as well as income-related policy measures, will support household spending. 'The expansion in investment activity will be sustained by the progress of multi-year projects in both the private and public sectors, the continued high realisation of approved investments, as well as the ongoing implementation of catalytic initiatives under the national master plans,' it said. Further, the central bank said favourable trade negotiation outcomes, pro-growth policies in major economies, continued demand for electrical and electronic goods, and robust tourism activity could raise Malaysia's export prospects. However, the growth outlook remains vulnerable to downside risks, primarily due to slower global trade, weakened sentiment, and lower-than-expected commodity production. Headline and core inflation averaged 1.4% and 1.9% in the first five months of the year, respectively, BNM noted. Overall, inflation in 2025 is expected to remain moderate amid contained global cost conditions and the absence of excessive domestic demand pressures, it said. Inflationary pressure from global commodity prices is expected to stay limited, helping to keep domestic cost conditions moderate. In this context, the impact of current and upcoming policy reforms on inflation is likely to remain contained. BNM said although Malaysia's economy remains resilient, growth prospects could still be affected by external uncertainties. It said the ringgit's performance will continue to be influenced by global factors, but strong economic fundamentals and structural reforms are expected to provide steady support. Against this backdrop, BNM's recent rate cut is a pre-emptive move to safeguard growth, with the central bank remaining watchful of risks to both inflation and economic momentum.

M'sia wants Airbus, Embraer to consider it for MRO, supply chain hub

(AFP pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia wants aircraft supplier companies such as Airbus and Embraer to make the country a hub for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), as well as training and supply chain activities if the agreements to purchase dozens of aircraft by AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines are realised. Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said that apart from discussing the potential purchase of aircraft, the government was taking the same approach to ensure that the purchase provides benefits or advantages to Malaysia to attract investment. 'This is the strategy we are using so that these purchases are not just one-way – they also benefit Malaysia in the aerospace sector. 'Of course, our airlines need to have a more diversified purchasing strategy, including Malaysia Airlines which is now also diversified in terms of purchasing aircraft and not just relying on one supplier,' Loke told reporters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the end of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Italy, France and Brazil. He said the government had also suggested that France consider Malaysia as a potential location for a final assembly line for the aircraft. 'Presently, Airbus has quite a lot of orders. Many aircraft have not been delivered and many airlines that have ordered Airbus aircraft are facing delays. 'Airbus currently has a backlog of 8,000 aircraft, so it has problems in terms of supply chain and so on to complete these aircraft. Of course, this backlog will continue, and that is why we also hope that Airbus can invest more in Malaysia in terms of securing the supply chain and considering Malaysia as an aircraft assembly destination,' he said. He said this would boost the country's aerospace sector and provide job opportunities for Malaysians. 'This is the strategy we hope for through diplomacy like this and the presence of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim speaking to the French president and the company directly, together with the Airbus management – I think (it) is a proactive diplomatic action from the country,' he said. AirAsia has signed a deal for Airbus 321XLR long-haul aircraft worth US$12.25 billion (RM51.72 billion), to be delivered in 2028. According to Loke, Airbus already operates in Malaysia including through an MRO and training centre. 'For example, they have Airbus helicopter training based in Subang. It is already there but what we want is for them to expand their operations,' he said. Meanwhile, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of national carrier Malaysia Airlines, has exercised its purchase rights for 20 additional A330neo aircraft through a direct order with Airbus. The new order builds on MAG's initial commitment in 2022 to 20 A330neo aircraft – 10 directly purchased and 10 leased from Avolon – bringing the group's total A330neo commitment to 40 aircraft. Deliveries of the additional batch are scheduled to be made between 2029 and 2031. 'Malaysia Airlines has ordered 20 A330neo aircraft, but so far only four have been delivered. This was ordered three years ago – there are 16 more to go. 'They add on another 20 right now, so all together there will be 40 A330neo aircraft. On top of that, Malaysia Airlines is considering A350 aircraft as well. So that is something they have to decide on soon,' said Loke. Composites Technology Research Malaysia Sdn Bhd, based in Batu Berendam, Melaka, has gained the trust of the world's largest airlines, including Airbus and Boeing, for the production of several aircraft components. Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer meanwhile has nearly 20 operators in the Asia Pacific, collectively operating around 200 E-Jets. Anwar has met with the CEO of Embraer, and airlines AirAsia and Air Borneo have expressed interest in making purchases.
