India gets global buyer interest for BrahMos missile from Asia to South America

While security experts acknowledge the growing clout of the industry, they say sustaining this momentum would require broader expertise, less reliance on foreign technology and more supportive policies to realise India's potential as a global arms supplier.
Earlier this week, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the BrahMos missiles played an 'outstanding' role in Operation Sindoor, India's response to the April 22 attack near Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians, mostly Hindu pilgrims. New Delhi has blamed Pakistan-linked militants while Islamabad denies any involvement.
Singh told reporters that 14 to 15 countries had since expressed interest in the supersonic cruise missile developed jointly with
Russia
Rajiv Kumar Narang, senior fellow at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, told This Week in Asia: '[Operation Sindoor] was a real-time learning experience that gave us inputs to improve. Once the product is proven, it becomes more acceptable in the international market.'

That credibility boost appears to be translating into potential demand. According to reports, countries showing interest in BrahMos include Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Venezuela.

Hong Kong authorities may appeal court ruling on opposite-sex public toilet use
Hong Kong authorities have said they will consider appealing against the court's decision to uphold a transgender man's legal challenge against a ban on people using some public toilets designated for the opposite sex. Advertisement A spokesman for the Environment and Ecology Bureau said on Tuesday that the government was studying the judgment handed down the day before and seeking legal opinions, while considering mounting an appeal. 'The establishment of sex-segregated public toilets under the Public Conveniences (Conduct and Behaviour) Regulation aims to protect the privacy and safety of the public when using public toilets, and to reflect social norms and expectations,' the spokesman said. 'This arrangement has been widely accepted by society.' The bureau also reminded residents that they must continue to use public toilets based on the principle of segregation of the sexes at present to avoid running afoul of the law. Advertisement At the centre of contention was the landmark ruling handed down by the High Court that upheld an anonymous litigant's claim that the government violated its constitutional duty to safeguard residents' fundamental rights by criminalising the misuse of public restrooms managed by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department at the expense of the transgender community. The Public Conveniences (Conduct and Behaviour) Regulation, which governs the use of public lavatories managed by the department, bars anyone aged five or above from such facilities allocated to their opposite sex. Offenders can face a fine of up to HK$2,000 (US$255).

Leapmotor rolls out smart EV at half the price of Tesla's Model 3 in push for global sales
Stellantis-backed Leapmotor has announced the latest phase in its global push by launching an electric midsize sedan that offers similar features to Tesla's Model 3 at less than half the price. The Hangzhou-based electric vehicle (EV) builder said the B01, priced from 89,800 yuan (US$12,542) in mainland China, would target markets around the world as it pursued new growth engines amid cutthroat competition at home. 'We are offering our answer to customers' demand for an exquisite, value-for-money mass market car,' Cao Li, Leapmotor's senior vice-president, told a press conference in Hangzhou on Thursday. 'We are confident that the new car has largely exceeded market expectations.' Deliveries to mainland Chinese customers would begin this month, but the company did not say when the new car would be sold overseas. Leapmotor developed the new model based on its upgraded architecture, known as Leap3.5, which supports smart driving and fast charging.
