A man launched an attack on a teenager he believed was "up to no good" near his property, breaking his arm and wrist, a court heard. George Kovacs assaulted the 17-year-old with a fence post and pole and then threatened to kill him if he returned.
A judge said he had read about issues involving people misbehaving and causing damage in the area where the defendant lived, but sending the 57-year-old father to prison, he said: "What you did went far beyond anything you reasonably thought you could do to protect that property."
Amy Edwards, prosecuting, told Caernarfon Crown Court on December 17, 2022, two then-17-year-old friends were walking in the mountains in the Waunfawr area of Gwynedd when they noticed an abandoned outbuilding and "out of curiosity" walked towards it, reports WalesOnline.
Ms Edwards said as they approached the building a vehicle drove past them before stopping and reversing back to them. The driver of the vehicle, Kovacs, got out and shouted "What the f*** are you boys doing here?" The court heard that one of the teenagers, Kian Williams, who is now an adult, apologised to the driver but Kovacs continued "ranting" and the teenager told him: "There's no need to be a d*** about it."
The prosecutor said Kovacs then grabbed a fence post and began swinging it around and striking Mr Williams, with the teenager putting his arms up to protect himself. The force of the blows were such that the post snapped. The court heard the defendant continued shouting that the boys should leave the area before grabbing Mr Williams, pushing him up against a wall and throwing a number of punches, all of which missed their target.
The prosecutor said the teenagers made for the footpath but Kovacs armed himself with a pole and followed them. The defendant struck Mr Williams a number of times to the legs and the back, though the blows to the back were cushioned by the rucksack he was wearing. Kovacs told the teenagers: "I'm going to kill you... come back again and I will slice you." For the latest court reports sign up to our crime newsletter
The court heard that the teenagers made their way home and Mr Williams was subsequently taken to Bangor's Ysbyty Gwynedd by his father where doctors found he had a fractured arm and a fracture to bones in his wrist which required surgery.
Meanwhile Kovacs put a post on a Facebook saying: "The lads who came from Liverpool or Manchester to my place, don't come back... next time they will have more then just a limp. Merry Christmas." He also said he had the registration of a vehicle they had been seen getting into.
The court heard Kovacs was arrested and interviewed and admitted striking the teenager with a pole saying his actions were justified as he was protecting his property.
In an impact statement written in May this year which was read to the court the victim said he still suffers with pain in his wrist and gets flashbacks to what happened in Waunfawr. He said he feels fearful when he goes out and constantly thinks of the defendant, adding: "This incident has taught me a lot of lessons about the man I want to be. I want to be the complete opposite of him."
George Kovacs, of Ceunant, Caernarfon, Gwynedd, had previously pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. He has five previous convictions for eight offences including weapons offences but none for violence.
Laura Knightly, for Kovacs, said the defendant lived in a "secluded area" with his wife and children and said he was a hard-working man. She, while in no way excusing his actions on the day in question, said there had been "concerns and fears in the area for some time" and that Kovacs' suspicions of the teenagers and his fears of what might happen "caused him to behave in this out-of-character way". The barrister added that her client thinks he may have blacked out during the incident.
Judge Timothy Petts said in December 2022 Kovacs saw two young men in the vicinity of a property near to where he lived and, believing they were "up to no good", he confronted them. He said he had read references written to the court detailing problems with people misbehaving and causing damage in the rea but he told the defendant: "What you did went far beyond anything you reasonably thought you could do to protect that property."
With a 15% discount for his guilty plea Kovacs was sentenced to 33 months in prison. He will serve up to half the sentence in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community. The defendant was also made the subject of a 10-year restraining order banning him from contacting his victim.

Showjumper had ‘mutual agreement' with partner to cheat before ‘forcing underage girl into sex with him & horse rider'

'SEX PACT' Showjumper had 'mutual agreement' with partner to cheat before 'forcing underage girl into sex with him & horse rider' A SHOWJUMPER had a "mutual agreement" with his girlfriend to cheat before he forced an underage girl into sex with him and a horse rider, a court heard. Guy Simmonds, 37, and Lauren Jarvis, 26, are accused of targeting the girl despite knowing she was under 16. Ms Dimes told Cardiff Crown Court today how she gave her permission for Simmonds to have sex with other women on the understanding that she 'did not want to know anything about it.' Prosecutor James Hartson said: 'You say there was an understanding that he might stray. Did he say 'This is how it is going to be?'' Giving evidence, Miss Dimes said: 'No. It was a mutual understanding.' Advertisement The court heard the couple met on Tinder before moving in together in 2022. Ms Dimes said in her evidence that the alleged victim would "tell stories" and often spoke about sex. She also denied she had been "coached or manipulated' by Simmonds over what to tell jurors. The court heard in January 2024, he messaged fellow rider Jarvis to organise a "threesome" at her home - asking when he should "pop over". Advertisement Simmonds then allegedly text the girl to inform her of the plan, telling her: "You will both do what daddy says." The girl told the court Simmonds got her and Jarvis to "do stuff" with each other before he had sex with both of them. Jurors heard previously Simmonds messaged Jarvis after the alleged encounter to say: "You both loved that haha". Jarvis then replied: "Yeah, you missed round two" with a wink emoji. Advertisement They later hatched a "pact of silence" when they got wind that the girl was talking about it, the court heard. Simmonds text Jarvis, saying: "Hey, I have a feeling that [name of alleged victim] has said about us. "If anyone asks for sake of both of us nothing ever happened that night xx." Jarvis replied: "Hey, who's she told? Oh god has she really, what's she trying to do, make our lives hell? Of course I will xx." Advertisement Simmonds ran a riding school that offered "showjumping horse production and sales, coaching and schooling" in the village of Undy in Wales. He added the girl on Facebook and told her "thanks for accepting" before being told her age, it is said. The experienced showjumper would allegedly regularly take the girl into a horsebox to sexually abuse her while they were alone at the stables. Jurors heard that at one point, this was happening every couple of days when Simmonds' girlfriend was away. Advertisement The alarm was raised when the girl told her dad what had allegedly happened and he alerted police. In her police interview, the girl said she felt she could not just walk away because she was scared Simmonds would "hurt me". She added: "I wasn't smiling and stuff when this was going on. If you looked at my face you could tell there was fear." The girl claimed there was one occasion where Simmonds took out his phone and allegedly began filming her. Advertisement She told police he had a "little smirk on his face", the court heard. Simmonds later dumped his mobile in a bin at a Tesco just days before he was arrested for alleged sexual contact with a child. He denied he was attempting to destroy evidence - and claimed the phone was broken when he was quizzed by police. The court heard he also burned or threw away a mattress from his horse box where he is accused of repeatedly having sex with the victim. Advertisement Simmonds told police he did not have any form of sexual contact with the victim. He also claimed any messages about the alleged encounter were "banter and a wind up." Simmonds denies six counts of sexual activity with a child, while Jarvis has pleaded not guilty to one charge of sexual activity with a child. The trial continues. Advertisement

Cartwright, 61, has now been found guilty of murder following a trial. Guildford Crown Court heard Samantha and Cartwright started their "whirlwind" romance in 2022 and got engaged a year later. After they split, Cartwright continued to pursue his ex - showing up at her home unannounced and "bombarding" her with calls. Prosecutor Louise Oakley said: "She didn't wish him any ill, but she no longer wanted to live with him and no longer wanted to be in a relationship with him. "But part of her also felt bad for him, believing that he had no one else to spend that day with. "As a result, she had arranged a celebratory meal and stay at Penny Hill Park and Spa, and in a final act of selflessness, she honoured that commitment despite telling friends and family that the relationship was over." XL Bully owner jailed after Caernarfon boy lost thumb in savage dog attack

A dog owner has been jailed after his XL Bully mauled a boy in the street in an horrific attack. Nine-year-old Caio Shaw lost his right thumb after Ian Parry's dog escaped on to a street in Caernarfon and pounced on the child. Caernarfon Crown Court heard Parry's daughter had probably let the dog out of its cage and it went on to North Penrallt and soon "focussed" on Caio, who was then aged eight. It lunged at him and a woman Yvonne Hodgson tried to fight off the dog. Parry, 45, himself came out of his house with a knife and stabbed the dog twice. Caio, whose thumb was "partially-amputated" by the dog, remains "terrified" of the idea of stumbling across the animal even though he has been told it is "gone". Caernarfon Crown Court heard his friends sometimes tease him about the injury which he can now treat as "banter" although the name still sometimes upsets him. The judge Her Honour Nicola Jones said children of that age can be "cruel". Caio has rejected surgeons' continuing suggestion that they use a toe to try to reconstruct his missing thumb as he doesn't want to endure yet more "pain". He suffers flashbacks and insists his mum Ffion Williams sleeps with him with the bedroom door tightly shut. Parry, a part-time fish and chip shop worker, of North Penrallt, Caernarfon, pleaded guilty to owning a dog dangerously out of control which caused injury. But a judge today said due to the "ongoing" effects of the horrific injury she could not suspend his sentence. She jailed him for 26 months and said he must serve up to half his sentence, with the remainder served on licence.
