Malaysian central bank launches digital asset innovation hub

KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The Malaysian central bank on Tuesday launched the Digital Asset Innovation Hub to stimulate financial innovation in a controlled environment for applicants to test new ideas and provide input to fine-tune regulatory and security frameworks.
Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) said that this is to support the development of digital assets and the application of leading financial technology in Malaysia.
Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said in his keynote speech that the hub is a testament to Malaysia's commitment to ensure policy evolves alongside innovation.
"The hub will serve as a catalyst for progress, enabling innovators to test use cases such as programmable payments, ringgit-backed stable coins and supply chain financing; unlocking new efficiencies across the financial system and the broader economy," he said.

'This initiative supports our 2025 targets of 43 million tourist arrivals and RM283.8 billion in tourism revenue,' he said. Tourism Malaysia's data shows Thailand contributed 2.26 million visitors to Malaysia in 2024, generating RM3.994 billion in tourism receipts. The festival aims to attract more Thai travellers by highlighting Malaysia's unique attractions. 'Hosting the festival in a high-traffic area allows us to reach a wider audience, encouraging more regional tourists to visit Malaysia,' Tiong added.

SST expansion on private kindergartens has minimal impact on parents
KUALA LANGAT: The recent expansion of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) will not significantly burden parents sending children to private nurseries, kindergartens, or preschools, according to Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. She clarified that the six per cent service tax, effective July 1, applies only to institutions charging annual tuition fees exceeding RM60,000 per student. 'The public need not worry, as it is understood that most private institutions currently do not charge fees that reach the RM60,000 threshold per year,' she told reporters after the Anjung Sinar 2025 Programme appreciation ceremony. Nancy urged operators to avoid exploiting the tax expansion to impose excessive fees. 'We hope they will act honestly to help parents so that they are able to work. Operators must also remember that people need their services, so do not charge excessively,' she added. The tax exemption extends to Malaysian citizens with disabilities. Meanwhile, Nancy presented awards to five Anjung Sinar Programme icons under Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN), recognising their contributions in education, leadership, community, career, and volunteerism.

Flag handover marks Myanmar as host of Mekong Tourism Forum in 2026
VIENTIANE/YANGON (Xinhua): The 2025 Mekong Tourism Forum concluded successfully, with Laos officially handing over a symbolic flag to Myanmar, the designated host for the 2026 forum. The handover ceremony was led by Phonemaly Inthaphome, director general of the tourism development department under the Lao Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism and received by U Maung Maung Kyaw, director general of Myanmar's Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, Lao national TV reported on Sunday. In her remarks, Phonemaly praised the active participation and collaboration of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries at the 2025 Mekong Tourism Forum. Held from June 24 to 27 under the theme "Travel Together, Grow Together," the event aimed to promote regional tourism development through solidarity, trust, mutual understanding, and respect. Key activities included high-level conferences, tourism product exhibitions, and study tours promoting tourism, agritourism, sustainable travel, cultural heritage, and visits to key sites in northern Laos' Luang Prabang province.
