The Ministry of Maritime Affairs has launched an ambitious project to modernise Korangi Fish Harbour (KOFHA), aiming to generate over $100 million in direct and indirect economic activity over the next five years. The initiative, spearheaded by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, is part of Pakistan's broader strategy to unlock the potential of the blue economy.
According to an official statement issued on Wednesday, the project will revitalise KOFHA through strategic infrastructure upgrades, aimed at increasing seafood exports, creating jobs, and improving operational efficiency. The minister said the initiative is expected to create more than 3,000 jobs across construction, logistics, fish processing and fishing-related services, while enhancing seafood processing capacity by 50%.
"This strategic move will make a meaningful contribution to Pakistan's $375 billion GDP, strengthening the maritime economy and supporting long-term national growth," Chaudhry said.
A central feature of the project is the complete redesign of the fish auction hall, which will be equipped with modern facilities to enhance efficiency, hygiene, and transparency. The upgraded hall will comply with international food safety standards and export certification protocols, facilitating increased global seafood trade.
The minister also announced the addition of a floating jetty to the harbour's infrastructure, which will improve vessel handling, reduce turnaround time, and support a higher volume of fishing activity. This will be complemented by a comprehensive overhaul of the existing jetty, incorporating technology-driven solutions and accessibility improvements.
Sustainability is a key component of the project. The upgrades will include environmentally responsible practices to protect marine biodiversity and ensure the long-term viability of the fisheries sector.
Chaudhry said that upgrading the Korangi Fish Harbour into a model fisheries hub is a strategic step toward economic transformation. "This is not just an infrastructure upgrade— it represents a pledge to unlock Pakistan's full maritime potential," he said.

Ministry unveils plan to expand operational capacity of Gwadar port

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Maritime Affairs has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand the operational capacity of Gwadar Port by establishing additional shipping lines and launching a new ferry service connecting Pakistan with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This was announced by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry during a dinner with journalists after chairing a high-level meeting with senior officials of the ministry. 'The initiative is part of the government's broader strategy to enhance regional connectivity, boost maritime trade, and position Gwadar as a major hub in the Arabian Sea,' said Junaid Chaudhry. 'We aim to transform Gwadar into a strategic trans-shipment and logistics centre, benefiting Pakistan and the wider region.' The minister emphasised that with Gwadar Port now fully operational, it is time to accelerate its integration into the international maritime networks. He directed relevant departments to pursue all necessary steps to increase the port's commercial activity and unlock its full potential. He said additional shipping lines will be connected to Gwadar to facilitate greater movement of goods, promote transit trade with Central Asia and the Middle East, and support Pakistan's growing role in the regional logistics landscape. 'The new routes will reduce pressure on existing ports and ensure faster, more efficient cargo handling,' the federal minister stated. In addition to enhancing cargo operations, the ministry has also planned to launch a ferry service from Gwadar to GCC countries. This move is expected to provide an affordable, direct maritime link for passengers and cargo, and will particularly benefit expatriate communities, and cross-border traders. 'The ferry service will strengthen people-to-people ties, boost tourism, and provide a new economic lifeline for Balochistan,' the minister said, adding it will create local employment, improve supporting infrastructure, and attract private sector participation, especially in the areas of ship services, hospitality, and transportation. The ministry has initiated consultations with shipping companies, maritime authorities, and port operators to finalise technical, legal, and logistical frameworks for both the new shipping lines and the ferry service. Safety, affordability, and environmental sustainability will be key priorities in the implementation phase. The minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to fully harness the strategic importance of Gwadar. He noted that these maritime developments align with Pakistan's vision to become a regional trade corridor and enhance its blue economy, as outlined in the country's National Maritime Policy. Govt's ban on plastic bags goes unnoticed

Officers deliver warning notice over the use of plastic shopping bags to a shopkeeper on the Autobahn Road. PHOTO: EXPRESS The use and sale of plastic shopping bags continue unabated across Hyderabad despite a province-wide ban imposed by the Sindh government from June 15. Banned plastic bags are still being used openly at grocery stores, general shops, and franchise outlets. The Sindh government has announced a complete ban on the manufacturing, sale, and use of all types of plastic shopping bags including non-degradable, oxo-degradable, black-coloured, and recycled bags in an effort to reduce environmental pollution and drainage blockages. A formal notification has also directed strict enforcement and legal action against violators. However, even after more than two weeks, implementation on the ground remains ineffective. Hyderabad DC Zain-ul-Abideen Memon, issued directives on June 19 to all assistant commissioners in the district to fully cooperate with the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) to ensure enforcement of the ban. Additional Deputy Commissioner-II Saba Israr also sent a letter to the director information, urging public awareness campaign advising citizens to avoid use of plastic bags and use cloth or paper bags instead. SEPA Regional Director Hyderabad, Imran Ali Abbasi, has claimed that the sale of plastic bag at the wholesale level has been halted and the local authorities have been directed to curb their usage at retail shops. He added that SEPA teams are actively visiting markets, issuing notices to shopkeepers, and distributing pamphlets to spread awareness. Reports indicate that Hyderabad has 107 wholesale plastic bag shops, including 65 in Tower Market, nine in Qasimabad, six in Faqir Ka Pir, 10 in Latifabad, two in Preetabad, and 15 in Tando Jam. This is not the first time such a ban has been introduced. In March 2018, the Sindh govt enforced Section 144 to prohibit the manufacture, sale, and use of plastic bags. Later, in November 2018, a phased ban was approved by the provincial cabinet. The latest ban, which came into effect on June 15, 2025, marks the third such attempt, yet meaningful implementation remains elusive.

KMC ends charged parking at 32 roads

Rates of charged parking displayed on the official board placed in the busy Saddar Bazaar are not followed by the contractors. Photo: Jalal Qureshi/Express The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) partially abolished its charged parking system, ending parking fees at 32 designated locations under its control, starting July 1. However, charged parking will continue across the city's 25 towns, six cantonments, and areas managed by different authorities. According to the KMC notification, charged parking was discontinued on various roads in KMC-administered areas, including at 20 locations in District East, seven in Korangi and Malir, three in District South, and two in Keamari. Additionally, 10 parking sites within boundary walls in District Central and District South were exempted from parking fees. This move is part of a decision announced earlier this year by Mayor Murtaza Wahab, who committed to eliminating parking fees at 45 out of 106 KMC-controlled sites, in the new fiscal year. Interestingly, despite abolishing fees from these parking areas, KMC's projected revenue from parking remains unchanged. According to the approved city budget, the target for parking revenue in the last FY was Rs105 million, with the same figure set for the upcoming FY. Meanwhile, expected income from parking at wedding halls and banquets has increased from Rs5 million to Rs10 million. Most charged parking continues to take place in the Saddar Town area, which houses the largest concentration of commercial centers. Saddar Town's Director of Charged Parking, Basheer Memon, clarified that charged parking on roads managed by towns and cantonments remains unaffected by KMC's recent decision.
