Being a film projectionist is lonely — but I enjoy it

Opinions Why I'm a film projectionist | Opinion July 15, 2025 | 10:12 PM GMT Carolyn Funk has handled thousands of miles of celluloid. She works for various repertory theaters and museums in New York, one of the last places on Earth where it is still possible to build a career as a film projectionist. According to Screen Slate, there are usually between four and 12 celluloid screenings in the city each day. The dark booths where Carolyn spends her working hours are meant to be invisible to moviegoers. For her, they are private worlds of machinery, images and sound.

David Corenswet's First Day as SUPERMAN Revealed in Behind-the-Scenes Featurette and Photos — GeekTyrant

Superman made a slash at the box office this weekend, and while reactions vary, one element of the film that has earned nearly universal praise is David Corenswet's fresh take on the Man of Steel. His performance sheds the brooding intensity of previous iterations, instead embracing the charm, warmth, and sincerity that recall Christopher Reeve's classic portrayal. Now, thanks to a new behind-the-scenes featurette and a series of striking black-and-white photos released by Hollywood Authentic, fans are getting a firsthand look at Corenswet's very first day on set in full Superman mode. In the featurette, Corenswet reflects on how it all began: 'My first audition was a self tape that I made in my house with my wife. I saw this sort of old Hollywood humour in it — like a Fred Astaire or a Donald O'Connor or a Jimmy Stewart humour. 'I was excited to do that and thought I'd do a good job with it, but I wasn't sure James had intended it in that way. So, for all I knew that wasn't what he was looking for.' That old-school charm clearly resonated with director James Gunn, who made it no secret that he was aiming to reconnect the character with his Golden Age roots, a Superman who leads with kindness, hope, and a slightly offbeat sense of humor. Corenswet's instincts tapped into that vision early, even if he wasn't sure at the time if it would land. The photos capture a relaxed but meaningful moment in Corenswet's journey, from wardrobe to rehearsal to standing tall in the suit for the first time. It's a small peek behind the cape, but it underscores the gravity and giddiness of stepping into such an iconic role. Love it or not, Superman is officially in flight, and Corenswet's earnest, human-centered performance is part of what makes this version stand out. If this featurette is any indication, he knew what kind of Superman he wanted to bring to life from day one, and he flew straight toward it.

AI smart glasses are a game-changer for the blind and low-vision community.

Posted Jul 15, 2025 at 8:40 PM UTC AI smart glasses are a game-changer for the blind and low-vision community. Don't take my word for it — I interviewed Jason Valley, a visually impaired Verge reader, for this week's Vergecast . Jason tells me how he uses the Ray-Ban Meta glasses as a visual interpreter, and how the Live AI feature has helped him live a more independent life after losing much of his sight. I also chat with Be My Eyes CEO Mike Buckley about why accessible design is universal design. Watch the full episode here.
