Call to preserve divine blessings in AI era: Brunei Sultan
Delivering a speech in conjunction with the Islamic New Year 1447 Hijrah last night, His Majesty also reminded that while the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is widely viewed in a positive light, it must be approached with caution. The monarch warned that AI can become like a virus if misused by irresponsible parties.
Reflecting on the uncertainties of today's world, marked by various crises and turmoil, His Majesty stressed the importance of remaining vigilant in order to guard against harmful influences.
The monarch likened the rapid development of AI technology to a form of 'migration' that is now deeply embedded in daily life. Although this shift is largely beneficial, His Majesty warned that the misuse of AI could spread harmful ideas, distort thinking, and even weaken faith, describing it as a potential 'virus' that infects the mind and soul.
His Majesty expressed strong confidence that Brunei, with Allah's will, can continue to prosper in peace and stability, as has already been demonstrated by the country's steady development. 'Why do we continue to enjoy such good fortune?' His Majesty asked. 'It is because we have consistently upheld Islam as the guiding principle of our lives and even in our system of governance. We obey what religion commands and refrain from what it prohibits. This is proof that faith and piety are flourishing in this blessed land of Brunei Darussalam.'
His Majesty cited Surah Al-A'raf, verse 96 of Al-Quran, which translates, 'And if the people of the cities had believed and feared Allah the Almighty, We would have opened upon them blessings from the heavens and the earth; but they denied [the messengers], so We seized them for what they were earning.'
His Majesty further reminded that blessings come in many forms: a peaceful nation, a prosperous country, obedience to Ulil Amri (those in authority), and unity among the people. All these are blessings that must be preserved.
To maintain these blessings, His Majesty emphasised, the nation must continue to uphold faith and piety. However, the monarch acknowledged that challenges exist, especially with the rise of modern trends.
AI technology, while widely adopted, has also made it difficult to distinguish truth from falsehood. His Majesty warned that some individuals are now willing to exploit AI to spread slander and misinformation on social media, which can slowly erode religious beliefs and practices.
'Therefore,' His Majesty said, 'we must protect ourselves from slander, as doing so strengthens both our faith and religious understanding.'
In this regard, His Majesty again urged those engaging in dakwah and religious speakers to continue their mission of guiding people towards a life of faith and piety, so that all – without exception – may live under the continued grace of Allah the Almighty's blessings.
His Majesty expressed gratitude to Allah the Almighty for allowing the nation to celebrate the Islamic New Year 1447 Hijrah in peace and joy. The monarch also expressed hope that the new year will bring blessings to all and continued peace and prosperity to the nation.
His Majesty, together with members of the royal family, extended New Year greetings to all levels of society and prayed for the continued blessings of Allah the Almighty and the safety of the country. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN

Mali ex-prime minister to stand trial over social media post, lawyer says
BAMAKO (Reuters) -A Malian court has detained and charged former Prime Minister Moussa Mara over a social media post criticising shrinking democratic space under military rule in the West African nation, his lawyer said late Friday. Mara is one of few public figures in the country who has been willing to openly question moves taken this year to dissolve political parties and grant the military government, led by Assimi Goita, a five-year mandate without elections. Last month, authorities formally approved Goita's five-year term and said it could be renewed as many times as necessary as Mali struggles to respond to a long-running jihadist insurgency. Goita assumed power after military coups in 2020 and 2021. Mara had been summoned several times for questioning this month over a social media post dated July 4 expressing solidarity with government critics who have been jailed. On July 21, his lawyer, Mountaga Tall, posted on social media site X that Mara had been barred from boarding a flight to Senegal to participate in a regional conference on peace and security. On Friday, Mara was summoned by a judicial cybercrimes unit, and a prosecutor charged him with offences including undermining the credibility of the state and spreading false information, Tall said in a statement. Mara's trial has been scheduled for September 29, Tall said. A government spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The case against Mara comes amid worsening insecurity in Mali. The past few months have seen a surge of deadly attacks by Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked group that also operates in Burkina Faso and Niger. Analysts say the group's battlefield tactics have grown increasingly sophisticated and that it has amassed substantial resources through raids on military posts, cattle rustling, hijacking of goods, kidnappings and taxes on local communities. On Friday, the group said it had ambushed a convoy of Malian soldiers and Russian mercenaries in the Tenenkou locality in central Mali. Mali's army confirmed the ambush in a statement on X. Neither statement gave a death toll. (Reporting by Mali newsroomWriting by Robbie Corey-Boulet; Editing by Susan Fenton)

Pahang Sultan vows to keep speaking out against land encroachment in state
KUANTAN: The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, has reaffirmed his commitment to continue voicing concerns over land encroachment in the state until the illegal activity is completely eradicated. However, His Highness said, addressing the issue requires the cooperation of all parties, including information sharing by the public and firm enforcement by the District and Land Offices, as well as the Forestry Department. "I will speak out when there is encroachment, not only in Raub and the Cameron Highlands but also in all districts in Pahang, but I cannot do it alone. I hope the people will provide information to my office and the government… if they do not provide information, it may be difficult to monitor," he said. Al-Sultan Abdullah shared his views in a special interview with Bernama at Istana Abdulaziz recently, in conjunction with his 66th birthday celebration. The Sultan acknowledged that the widespread attention the issue has received has served as a wake-up call to both stakeholders and residents of the state. "When this issue emerged, I observed greater awareness from all parties, including the public and district-level administrators. Many reports have reached my office and were forwarded to the state government for further action," he said. His Highness reiterated that Pahang, and Malaysia as a whole are not a place for anyone to commit arbitrary land encroachment. "Stop these practices immediately. More importantly, I hope that those who have the intention of encroaching, it is better they leave Pahang, go outside Malaysia. This is because the law will make things difficult for you and your families in the future," he warned. Prior to this, Al-Sultan Abdullah had expressed deep sadness upon learning that about 10,521 hectares of land in Raub had been encroached upon over an extended period. A total of 14,494.9 hectares of government land were also reportedly cleared and cultivated illegally with oil palm, rubber, durian, and various crops, while 5,997.09 hectares of Permanent Forest Reserve were also affected. Al-Sultan Abdullah's determination to combat the activities was also evident by His Highness taking a look down and driving a four-wheel drive vehicle to see the effects of encroachment in Raub on May 8. In the meantime, His Highness expressed his desire to develop small and medium industries (SMEs) in the state through the implementation of various programmes, especially involving youth. Al-Sultan Abdullah said that young people should strive to improve their quality of life by participating in SMEs to highlight the state's various products. "I also propose to meet with the relevant state executive council member to discuss so that we can have a programme that can develop SMEs in total. I hope we can prioritise these SMEs... let it be small (business), but sustainable," he said. — BERNAMA
