£11.7m Fund to Boost Business Investment and Jobs at Port Talbot
The Economic Growth and Investment Fund is designed to support companies that offer skilled, well-paid employment opportunities that match the talents of the local workforce.
The fund includes £6.78 million from the UK Government and £5 million from Tata Steel UK and will complement the work of the Welsh Government and Neath Port Talbot Council to strengthen the local economy, the UK Government said.
A period of engagement with businesses will begin ahead of the fund opening for bids in the autumn. This will shape the fund's design, aiming to ensure it meets the needs of businesses. Once engagement has been completed, the fund is then subject to business case approval by UK Government.
This funding announcement is the latest from the Tata Steel / Port Talbot Transition Board, chaired by Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens and including representatives from the UK and Welsh Governments, local authorities, unions and business.
Since its first release of funding in August 2024, it has now announced £80 million to fund skills training for workers and regeneration projects as Tata Steel carries out its transition to electric arc steelmaking.
Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens said:
'This new fund is a powerful example of what can be achieved when government and business work together to deliver for communities. Backed by over £11.7 million, it will help local businesses grow, create high-quality jobs and attract more new investment to Port Talbot.
'This announcement marks the full allocation of the UK Government's £80 million contribution to the Transition Board – all delivered in less than a year. It's a clear demonstration of this government's determination to act swiftly and decisively in support of Port Talbot and its steelmaking community, ensuring that funding reaches the people and businesses who need it most.
'We said we would back the steelworkers of Port Talbot, their families and businesses dependent on Tata Steel and we have delivered on that promise.
Tata Steel UK's Head of Public Relations Tim Rutter said:
'We are delighted to support this new Economic Growth and Investment Fund from our £20 million commitment to the Transition Board. Local businesses play a vital role in the growth and economic prosperity of the region, and we are confident this fund will draw in further investment, providing jobs and opportunities for people across the area.
'We continue to be committed to supporting those individuals impacted by our business transformation, and this fund will complement the existing support services that we have put in place, in addition to the most generous voluntary redundancy package in the company's history.

Neath Port Talbot Council Leader, Cllr Steve Hunt said:
'This announcement marks another major milestone in our response to a period of significant change for the local economy of the Port Talbot area.
'A key aim for us as a council is to create more secure, green, and well-paid jobs and to develop the skills required for these roles. As such we are working hard to meet the current challenges and to move beyond these to future economic growth.
'Working alongside our Transition Board partners we will soon be engaging the local business community to ensure we make the most of the opportunity that this funding presents.'

Ambassador visits Newport and Magor in trade roadshow
Anne Sherriff, the UK's ambassador to Belgium, visited south Wales on June 30 as part of a new roadshow led by foreign secretary David Lammy. The roadshow aims to strengthen economic ties and drive growth across the UK by connecting regions with overseas markets. Mr Lammy said: "Wales has a strong connection to Belgium but there's so much more we can do to boost trade and investment. The visit also included a stop at AB InBev's brewery in Magor. Ms Sherriff said: "It's exciting to be in south Wales as part of this first-of-its-kind roadshow – going the extra mile to develop relationships that will help us supercharge growth to every corner of the UK. "We're hitting the road to speak directly to community leaders and businesses, so that not a single opportunity is missed to generate trade and investment wins overseas. "I am looking forward to building on today's roadshow discussions to showcase Wales on the international stage." The Magor brewery is AB InBev's largest in the UK and produces leading brands such as Budweiser and Stella Artois. The ambassador's visit aims to strengthen an already significant trade relationship. Total trade between the UK and Belgium reached £60.7 billion in 2024, with Belgian investment stock in the UK close to £50 billion. Several Welsh businesses benefit from this relationship. Belgian companies such as Syensqo in Wrexham, What's Cooking in Deeside, and United Petfoods in Llangadog all operate in Wales, supporting jobs and growth in the region.

Why people formed a huge line around the Senedd
Hundreds of people joined together outside the Senedd on Tuesday to show their support for Palestine. People held lengths of red material which they say demonstrates the "red lines" that Israel has crossed through with alleged violations of international law and human rights. The protesters chanted and held placards and held the material, which reached from the main entrance to the Senedd round to the adjoining office block for staff at Ty Hywel. Zahid Noor from PSC Cymru said: "This red line action calls on Wales, as a nation committed to global responsibility, to stand on the right side of history. Public support for Palestine is growing rapidly across Wales and beyond." Conservative MS Darren Millar raised the protest in the Senedd during First Minister's Questions. He said there had however been chants used at the protest echoing those at Glastonbury. "Those chants have been repeated at a protest attended by Labour and Plaid Cymru MSs," he said. He asked the First Minister to "condemn such hateful and vile chants, condemning the BBC for broadcasting them, and what discussions will you have with your own party's MSs and leaders of the Jewish community in Wales to reassure them of the Welsh Government's support". Eluned Morgan responded that "it is not right to stir up it is frankly illegal which is why there is a police inquiry going on at the moment and that's the right thing to do". How every Welsh MP voted on controversial welfare change plans Another late, and major concession, from the UK Government was needed to avoid an embarrassing defeat MPs have voted in favour of watered-down plans to reform welfare payments. The UK Government had to go further with its concessions from last week to avoid a humiliating defeat for its plans. A number of MPs, including five Labour MPs from Wales, had said they would vote for what's called a reasoned amendment, which, if it had passed, would have sunk the government bill. Plaid Cymru's four MPs also said they would back the amendment. That led the government to change the substance of its bill with all but one of the Welsh Labour rebels, Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr MP Steve Witherden, keeping his name on the rebel amendment. During the debate and before any vote the government offered a further concession to rebelling Labour MPs over its plans with disability minister Sir Stephen Timms saying changes to PIP would not take place until after a review of the benefit has concluded. The BBC's political editor, Chris Mason, has said the government was told hours before the ballot that numbers showed that even with the first major concession "defeat was very realistic". The combination of concessions meant enough MPs backed the bill and the proposal has passed the first stage of parliamentary scrutiny and it will go on to further scrutiny called the second reading.. Mr Witherden was the only Welsh Labour MP to vote against the Universal Credit and Personal Independent Payment Bill. All four Plaid Cymru MPs and the sole Liberal Democrat also refused to give it their backing.
