Sweden beats Denmark 6-2 to take bronze at ice hockey worlds
It was the second straight third-place finish for Sweden while fourth place was the best-ever result for Denmark.
With a star-studded team of NHL players, Sweden was hoping to end a drought dating back to 2018 at a tournament jointly staged in the Swedish capital and the Danish city of Herning.
Lucas Raymond and Mika Zibanejad also scored for the hosts while Denmark got the goals from Nick Olesen and Nikolaj Ehlers.
Despite the loss, it was a tournament to remember for Denmark.
The Danes opened the competition with three straight losses and squeezed into the quarterfinals by prevailing over Germany 2-1 in a shootout in the final group stage game.
Then the team made history by reaching the semifinals for the first time by stunning a Canada team led by Sidney Crosby 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
It was Denmark's second win over Canada after also winning 3-2 at the 2022 worlds.
Switzerland proved too strong for the Danes in the semis, routing them 7-0.
Denmark added to the successes of less-accomplished hockey nations in the 2023 edition of the tournament when Germany took silver for its first medal since 1953 and Latvia won bronze for its first top-three finish.
The United States and Switzerland meet in the gold medal game later Sunday.

Summer McIntosh, the 18-year-old Canadian swimming star, rolled to victory Sunday in the women's 400-meter individual medley, setting a world-championship record and winning her fourth individual gold medal of the event. A day later, she won the 200 IM, then the 200 butterfly on Thursday. That set up Saturday's showdown with Ledecky in the 800 freestyle. In a race Ledecky has dominated for over a decade, McIntosh took the lead heading into the 700-meter turn, but she couldn't keep up with the American star over the last 100 and ended up finishing third behind Ledecky and Australian Lani Pallister. She had no such issues Sunday in one of her signature events. She won the last two world championships in which she competed, in 2022 and 2023, and took Olympic gold in the event last summer. Airdrie athlete Brodie Young hopes he's done enough to secure a Commonwealth Games place after winning bronze at the European Under-23 Championships in Norway. The Airdrie Harrier recorded a PB 45.34 to take third place in the men's 400m final in Bergen on July 19, which is inside the Commonwealth Games qualifying mark for Glasgow 2026. And he hopes it's a platform to build on for his career. The 22-year-old said: 'It feels really good. Going into it, I wasn't overly expecting to come away with a medal, I was more just there to try and run a fast time – but I was happy to get both. 'That's me got the qualifying mark now, there are two rounds of selection – one at the start of October, one at the start of June – so hopefully now I have the standard, I'll get selected in one of those rounds. 'But I'm not 100 per cent sure on which one it will be. 'The whole final was really competitive, there were a lot of fast boys running in it. 'The weather was also really hot, so it was really difficult and challenging, and there were a lot of different factors. 'The last section of the race was really difficult, but there was that motivation with a medal being on the line, and that's what pushed me through it.' Young has targeted Glasgow 2026, and says Bergen has given him a real boost. He said: 'It's something I can build on, and it gives me a lot of motivation, especially moving on to next year, because the Commonwealth Games is going to be the main target. 'Being able to walk away with a European medal gives me a lot more confidence, going into training over the winter and starting my season. 'I'm going to be in the States for a while, but it's great over in New Mexico, with great facilities and coaches, and everything I've needed. 'It has really helped me this year, and having good team-mates there has pushed me on and aided me for how I've performed.' It was a good weekend for Scottish athletes in Bergen, with Alyson Bell winning gold with the GB and NI women's 4x100m team, and Rebecca Grieve also took top prize with the GB women's 4x100m, in a championship record of 3:26.52.
