Dakota Jokes "Madame Web" Flop Was 'Not Her Fault'

Buzz Feed07-06-2025
Dakota Johnson is reflecting on the negative reception her film Madame Web was met with last year.
The Fifty Shades Of Grey star appeared alongside Sydney Sweeney and The Last Of Us' Isabela Merced in the Spider-Man spin-off, taking the lead as Cassandra Webb.
Upon its release, Madame Web was near-unanimously slammed by critics, and was also a bomb at the box office.
Asked about the project during a new interview with the LA Times, Dakota quipped: 'It wasn't my fault.'
She explained: 'There's this thing that happens now where a lot of creative decisions are made by committee. Or made by people who don't have a creative bone in their body. And it's really hard to make art that way. Or to make something entertaining that way.
'And I think unfortunately, with Madame Web, it started out as something and turned into something else. And I was just sort of along for the ride at that point. But that happens. Bigger-budget movies fail all the time.'
'I don't have a Band-Aid over it,' she claimed. 'There's no part of me that's like, 'Oh, I'll never do that again' to anything. I've done even tiny movies that didn't do well. Who cares?'
Shortly after the movie's release, Dakota admitted she was 'not surprised' to see Madame Web being picked apart in the way that it was.
'It was a real learning experience, and of course it's not nice to be a part of something that's ripped to shreds,' she said. 'But I can't say that I don't understand.'
Dakota previously told Entertainment Weekly: '[Before Madame Web, I'd] never really done a movie where you are on a blue screen, and there's fake explosions going off, and someone's going, 'Explosion!' and you act like there's an explosion. That to me was absolutely psychotic.
'I was like, 'I don't know if this is going to be good at all! I hope that I did an okay job!'.'

Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson Joke ‘Naked Gun' Intimacy Coordinator Left During ‘Hot' Sex Scene

Things got a little too spicy between Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson! While filming a sex scene for the upcoming Naked Gun reboot – which hits theaters on August 1 – the Taken actor, 73, revealed production called in an intimacy coordinator to help capture the moment. 'I'd never had one before. But she was in the background,' he explained, according to The Sun. 'There was no kind of, 'OK! Excuse me!'' Not only did the intimacy coordinator not interrupt them – Anderson, 58, joked that she left the set in the middle of their scene. Neeson teased that she threw her hands up and told them, 'I can't take this! This is too hot for me. I'm going for coffee.' In the highly-anticipated reboot of the classic comedy franchise, Neeson helms the role of Detective Frank Drebin Jr., who is the son of the character originally played by Leslie Nielsen in the late '80s and early '90s. The former Baywatch star plays Frank's love interest, Beth. As their characters' relationship budded on camera, the costars forged their own sweet bond. 'I think I have a friend forever in Liam, and we definitely have a connection that is very sincere, very loving, and he's a good guy,' Anderson told Entertainment Weekly. 'He's a true artist. He comes from theater and Schindler's List and has done over a hundred films. And I did things inside out and backwards, came from television, and then my personal life kind of overshadowed my professional life,' she continued. 'It is funny: We all come to this place in different ways, but to be able to share this experience with him is very meaningful and such an honor.' The feelings were mutual for Neeson. In an interview with People, he said he was 'madly in love with her' and called Anderson 'terrific to work with.' 'I can't compliment her enough, I'll be honest with you. No huge ego. She just comes in to do the work,' he added. 'She's funny and so easy to work with. She's going to be terrific in the film.' Despite their playfully flirty comments about their on-screen romance, when it comes to romance, the Batman Begins actor confessed that his dating days are behind him. 'I'm past all that,' he candidly told People. Neeson was previously married to wife Natasha Richardson. They tied the knot in 1994 and remained together until she tragically passed away following a skiing accident in 2009. They share sons Micheál Richardson, 30, and Daniel Neeson, 28, together. Last year, Daniel wrote a touching tribute to his mother on the 15th anniversary of her death. 'I look forward to reuniting one day but for now I take solace in knowing you're beside me every step of the way,' he shared on Instagram in August 2024. 'Hopefully, I'm making you proud.' Benedict Cumberbatch blasts his 'horrific' Marvel diet for 'Doctor Strange': 'I could feed a family'

"It's a grossly wasteful industry," the actor behind Stephen Strange said. An apple a day is not nearly enough for Doctor Strange — but maybe it should be. Benedict Cumberbatch discussed his complicated feelings toward maintaining his Marvel diet and fitness regimen during an interview with the Ruthie's Table podcast. "For me, the exercise is great," the Sherlock star began. "And the end result is that you feel strong and you feel confident — you hold yourself better. You have stamina through the exercise and the food that makes you last through the gig." Cumberbatch expressed dismay, however, at the nutritional side of the job. "But it is horrific. I don't like it personally," he said. "I think it's horrific eating beyond your appetite. Again, going back to responsibility and resourcefulness and sustainability — it's just like, what am I doing? I could feed a family with the amount I'm eating." Cumberbatch said that his diet while playing the Sorcerer Supreme included five meals per day, plus "a couple of boiled eggs between those five meals, or some kind of high protein snack, cheese and crackers or almond butter and crackers — crackers, lots of crackers." That being said, the Imitation Game actor said that on the whole, he appreciates the overall process of maintaining intense fitness for his superhero projects. "It's great fun. I love it. I love body transformation in my job," he said. "On Marvel, it's a big sand pit. So they've got resources. You have someone who can prescribe you what you're eating, and they can cook [for] you. We had a fantastic chef on the last Doctor Strange film." Other Marvel actors have previously discussed the difficulties of maintaining a superheroic physique. Paul Rudd said that he essentially cut out all flavorful foods while playing Ant-Man. "When I was having to train for the Ant-Man movie, and I was on a very restrictive diet, my reward was sparkling water," he told the Off Menu podcast in 2023. "That's how horrible that diet was. I was like, 'All right, I can have some sparkling water now, I've earned it.'" Earlier this year, Danny Ramirez — who played Joaquin Torres, the new Falcon in Captain America: Brave New World — said that upholding his character's physique requires significant sacrifice from a dietary standpoint. "I think everyone out there that goes through an intense training regimen knows how boring it gets," he told Men's Health. "Now my dinners are kinda bland." Elsewhere in the Ruthie's Table interview, Cumberbatch also explained how his Marvel diet is indicative of a wider problem in Hollywood. "It's a grossly wasteful industry," he said. "You may think about set builds that aren't recycled, think about transport, think about food, think about housing, but also light and energy — the amount of wattage you need to sort of create daylight and consistent light in a studio environment, it's a lot of energy."The Power of the Dog actor said that when he produces projects, he pushes for more climate-friendly policies during production. "It is a systemic thing, but as a producer, I'm really hot on that," he said. "I try to push the green initiative, the green handshake into every agreement I can, whether it's just a gentlemanly discussion about, 'Can we not have any single-use plastic? Really, I think we're beyond that.' [Or] if people have water bottles now, they can bring in.... You don't have to give the crew plastic bottles." Watch the full interview with Cumberbatch above. ‘Materialists' Comes to Digital, But When Will Dakota Johnson's ‘Materialists' Movie Be Streaming on HBO Max?

Celine Song's Materialists movie is coming to digital platforms tomorrow, which means you'll soon be able to watch one of the most divisive movies of 2025 from the comfort of your own home. Starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, Materialists tells the story of a professional matchmaker (Johnson) who finds herself torn between a perfect, dreamy newcomer (Pascal) and her annoying-but-beautiful ex-boyfriend (Evans). Though the film was advertised as a light-hearted, romantic comedy follow up to Song's 2023 heartbreaking, Oscar-nominated romance, Past Lives, many were disappointed by the lack of comedy in the film. But others found it to be a touching, grounded romance all the same. This is definitely one of those movies that you'll want to watch for yourself and form your own opinion on. Read on to find out where to watch Dakota Johnson's Materialists movie online, and when we expect to be able to watch Materialists streaming on HBO Max. Where to watch the Dakota Johnson Materialists movie on streaming: Beginning on Tuesday, July 22 at 12 a.m. Eastern Time (which is also 9 p.m. Pacific Time on Monday, July 21) you will be able to buy a digital copy of Materialists on platforms like Amazon Prime, Fandango At Home, Apple TV, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to buy the film, but on Amazon, the film cost $24.99 to pre-order a digital copy. Materialists will not yet be available to rent online. Materialists is not currently available to stream on any subscription-based services, but the film will eventually be coming to streaming, on HBO Max, thanks to the 2023 deal between A24 and Warner Bros. Discovery, which brings A24's previous and upcoming theatrical releases to the streaming service HBO Max. If you're new to HBO Max, you can sign up for as low as $9.99/month with ads, but an ad-free subscription will cost $16.99/month. HBO MAX DISNEY+ BUNDLES If you want to stream even more and save a few bucks a month while you're at it, we recommend subscribing to one of the discounted Disney+ Bundles with Hulu and HBO Max. With ads, the bundle costs $16.99/month and without ads, $29.99/month. When will the Materialists movie be streaming on HBO Max? The Materialists movie streaming release date on HBO Max has not yet been announced, but we can make an educated guess as to when you can expect to see Materialists on HBO Max. The A24 deal is a 'Pay-1 deal,' which means A24 movies will start streaming on HBO Max in the 'Pay 1 window,' meaning that HBO Max will be the first 'TV channel' to pay for the rights to Friendship, after the film has been released on digital and home media. One recent A24 title, Opus, began streaming on Max on July 11, about four months after its release in theaters, and about three months after its release on digital. If Materialists follows a similar release strategy, you might see Materialists streaming on Max in about four months, around mid-October 2025. This is all speculation. The A24 digital and streaming releases have varied by title. If you want to watch Materialists right away, you can buy a digital copy starting tomorrow.
