Modi makes debut on Truth Social, highlights friendship with Trump in first post
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his debut on Truth Social, the social media platform owned by Trump Media and widely associated with former US President Donald Trump, on Monday.
Modi's move to join the platform marks a new chapter in his social media engagement, particularly on a platform where President Trump has a significant presence.
In his first post, Modi, who used the term "Truths" for his posts on the platform, shared a picture with his 'good friend' President Trump.
He wrote, 'Delighted to be on Truth Social! Looking forward to interacting with all the passionate voices here and engaging in meaningful conversations in the times to come.' This marked his entry into the growing digital connection between the two leaders.
In his second post, PM Modi shared a link to his recent 3-hour podcast with Lex Fridman, a renowned podcaster and computer scientist.
The podcast touched upon a wide range of topics, from leadership to global affairs. Trump himself had highlighted the podcast, further strengthening the bond between the two leaders. In the post, Modi expressed his gratitude, saying, 'Thank you, my friend, President Trump. I've covered a wide range of topics, including my life journey, India's civilisational outlook, global issues, and more.'
During the podcast, which aired Sunday, Modi revealed that he and Trump connect deeply due to their shared approach of prioritizing their countries.
He also reflected on their mutual trust, which remained strong even during Trump's absence from office under President Joe Biden's administration. Modi fondly recalled an instance during Trump's first term when the US President bypassed security protocol to agree to a request to take a lap around the stadium during the 'Howdy Modi' event in Houston.
The development signals a significant moment in Modi's digital presence, especially as he aligns himself with a platform popular among Trump's supporters

Teen boy dies, two terrorists killed in Mastung
Listen to article A 16-year-old boy lost his life and seven others sustained injuries in a terrorist attack in Mastung district, while two Indian proxy assailants were shot dead during a counter-operation carried out by security forces, a government official said on Tuesday. Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind said the armed men targeted key government installations, including the Tehsil office, a local bank, and other administrative buildings. They opened indiscriminate fire, killing a teenage student on the spot and leaving at least seven others injured. Police said that the assailants entered the city in the morning and set government offices and two banks on fire. Security personnel from the Frontier Corps (FC), Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), and Levies Force responded promptly and engaged the attackers in a counter-terror operation. An intense exchange of gunfire ensured in which two terrorists were killed, while three others sustained injuries, according to the police. Rind said that the attackers were affiliated to "Fitna al Hindustan," a term used for a network of India-backed terror activities aimed at destabilising Balochistan. Mastung Deputy Commissioner Athar Abbas Raja said that multiple gunshots and explosions were heard in the area around 11:00am, which caused widespread panic among local residents. "The immediate vicinity was placed under lockdown as security teams took control of the situation," Raja said. Government spokesperson Rind said that a full-scale operation against terrorists was under way in the area. "The forces have launched a systematic clearance operation and intelligence-based operations are continued to protect the citizens as well as arrest the terrorists and their facilitators," he added. Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) provinces have witnessed a surge in terrorist attacks in recent past. Many of those attacks are believed to be orchestrated by foreign-backed insurgent groups. In K-P, a successful operation was carried out by security forces in the Teri Mangal area of Kurram district, in which two terrorists, Hafeezur Rehman and Wajid Gul were killed. Security forces said the two slain terrorists carried head money of Rs5 million each. Sources said the two men were part of a group responsible for the killing of five teachers in Teri Mangal in 2023. The provincial government had announced bounties for Hafeezur Rehman, Wajid Gul and three others in July 2024. During the exchange of fire on Tuesday, the sources said, a local resident was injured with a gunshot wound to his leg. They added that further measures were being taken to maintain peace in the area and that operations would continue until the complete elimination of terrorists in the area. In a separate incident in Tajazai area of Lakki Marwat district, two traffic police officials were shot dead by unidentified armed assailants. The victims, identified as Israeel and Sanaullah, both residents of Long Khel, were on their way to duty at the Tajazai traffic checkpoint. K-P Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur strongly condemned the tragic killing of two police officers and expressed profound grief over the loss of the law-enforcement personnel. "The sacrifice of these brave officers in the line of duty will not be forgotten," he stated. "The families of our martyrs will not be left alone , we stand with them in their moment of grief and will provide all necessary assistance," chief minister emphasised. The provincial government has announced full state honours for the martyred officers as investigations into the incident continue. (WITH INPUT FROM APP)

A comment on Finance Act 2025—II
Disruption and distortion The tax regime introduced is a final tax regime. This means that such transactions which were earlier subject to normal tax are now going to be taxed at the aforesaid rates which will be final tax on such transactions. This change will create a big disruption and distortion and the whole business model may change if the business is switched to digital mode. A comment on Finance Act 2025—I This will improve documentation; however the final regime, which is creating distortion, is to be rolled back, over the time, when there is adequate documentation. Exclusion These new provisions will not apply to exports of goods (Section 154) and export of services (Section 154A), which will continue to be taxed under the present regime. Digital Presence Tax for Foreigners General For foreigners a new kind of tax under the name 'Digital Presence Proceeds Tax Act, 2025' has been introduced. This is a tax on proceeds of foreign vendors as are deemed to be attributable to Pakistani users based on their significant digital presence in Pakistan where: (i) The transaction is carried out through foreign online marketplace or e-store; (ii) They arise in connection with digitally ordered services and goods; and (iii) A Pakistani user is a party to the transaction. This tax applies to those cases where digital transactions are not covered under domestic digital transactions as referred above. This includes both goods and services. Rate The tax rate for collection for cross-border transactions of digitally ordered goods and services shall be as under. a. Services @ 5% of the payment including of advertisement on social media platforms b. Goods 5% of the payment made to foreign provider This tax therefore effectively relates to transactions undertaken by platforms like 'Amazon', 'Google' etc. Background and perspective The tax as imposed is a replica of the tax imposed in India. The present status in India is indicated below: The Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the change while introducing amendments to the 2025 Finance Bill in the lower house of parliament, which approved the tax measures in the budget. '(I) have proposed to remove (the) 6 percent equalisation levy for advertisements,' she told parliament. India's 6 percent equalisation levy, or digital tax, affects online advertising services provided by foreign companies, requiring them to withhold and remit the tax to the government. Last year, New Delhi abolished a levy of 2 percent on non-resident e-commerce firms for providing online services. This means that this taxation has been very strongly resisted by international companies, especially those in the USA. Special kind of presence in Pakistan This tax is levied on such services which are otherwise not taxable under normal regime as such digital presence is not treated as permanent establishment in Pakistan and even if it is so the activity is not considered to be attributable to Pakistan. In order to overcome that deficiency this specific law is introduced with a particular definition of digital presence which has been defined in the Act as under: Significant digital presence in Pakistan. – A foreign vendor shall have significant digital presence in Pakistan under this Act, where the foreign vendor supplies digitally ordered services and goods from outside Pakistan to any user in Pakistan, if the aggregate amount exceeds one million rupees in a financial year along with one of the following additional factors – (a) Existence of a user base and the associated data input; (b) Billing or collection in local currency or with a local form of payment; (c) Responsibility for the final delivery of goods and services to Pakistani consumers; (d) Responsibility for the provision by the foreign vendors of other support services (aftersales services, repairs and maintenance); and (d) Continued marketing and sales promotion activities, online or not, to attract customers. Collection and Payment of Tax Every payment intermediary including a banking company, financial institution, licensed exchange company or payment gateway responsible for making a payment in whole or part remitting outside Pakistan, to a foreign vendor for digitally ordered services or goods shall deduct tax from the gross amount paid. Definitions-Digital Tax for Foreigners 'digitally delivered services' means any service delivered over the internet or electronic networks, where the delivery is automated and required minimal or no human intervention including music, audio and video streaming services, cloud services, online software application services, services delivered through online inter-personal interaction i.e. tele-medicine, e-learning etc., online banking services, architectural design services, research and consultancy reports, accounting services in the form of digital files or any other online facility; (d) 'e-commerce' means sale or purchase of goods and services conducted over computer networks by methods specifically designed for the purpose of receiving or placing of orders either through websites, mobile applications or online marketplace having digital ordering features by using either mobile phones or automated computer-to-computer ordering system; (e) 'e-store' means the online platform including websites and software applications used to conduct e-commerce, which involves buying and selling goods or services including digital products, through electronic transactions over the internet or other computer networks; (f) 'online marketplace' means Online interfaces that facilitate, for a fee, the direct interaction between multiple buyers and multiple sellers for digital orders for supply of goods and services, without the platform taking economic ownership of the goods or rendering the services that are being sold; and (g) 'payment Intermediary' means any third part entity including a banking company, financial institution, a licensed foreign exchange company or payments gateway that facilitate the transfer of funds or payment instructions between two or more parties to enable, process, route or settle payments in a financial transaction, without being the ultimate source or recipient of the payment. Embargo/restriction on economic transactions The Finance Act, 2025 has for the first time laid down embargo/restrictions on certain economic transactions. Two kinds of transactions have been included: a. Those relating to acquisition of assets etc; b. Those relating to withdrawal from a bank account. S&P 500, Nasdaq edge down as Tesla slides
NEW YORK: The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq dropped from record highs on Tuesday, as Tesla shares were hit by a renewed spat between CEO Elon Musk and President Donald Trump, while better-than-expected economic data backed the US central bank's patient stance on rate cuts. Tesla dropped 5% after Trump threatened to cut off the billions of dollars in subsidies that Musk's companies get from the federal government, after Musk revived his criticism of Trump's wide-ranging tax-cut and spending bill. The Republican-controlled US Senate voted 51-50 to pass the bill that enshrines many of Trump's top priorities into law while adding $3.3 trillion to the national debt. The bill, now headed back to the House for final approval, aims to partly cover the tax-reduction costs by cutting Medicaid and some food assistance programs for low-income Americans. The blue-chip Dow got a boost from healthcare stocks such as UnitedHealth and Amgen, and was just about 600 points away from its all-time high touched in December. Data showed US job openings increased unexpectedly in May, suggesting labor market resilience despite trade and economic uncertainties. US Treasuries fell in response, pushing the 2-year yield to a near one-week high. Earlier in the day, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reiterated the US central bank plans to 'wait and learn more' about the impact of tariffs on inflation before lowering rates, again setting aside Trump's demands for immediate and deep rate cuts. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite posted record closing highs on Monday, capping their best quarter in over a year as hopes for more trade deals and possible rate cuts helped markets recover from concerns about chaotic US trade policies and geopolitical tensions. Market focus now shifts to Thursday's nonfarm payrolls report, which could help recalibrate bets for a rate cut as soon as July. Money markets are pricing in a 21.2% likelihood for a July rate cut and see about 64 basis points worth of cuts by the end of this year, per LSEG data. At 11:43 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 394.56 points, or 0.89%, to 44,489.33, the S&P 500 lost 18.03 points, or 0.29%, to 6,186.92 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 212.08 points, or 1.04%, to 20,157.66. Technology stocks, down 1.4%, led the decline among the major S&P sectors, while material stocks climbed 2.4% and the healthcare sector added 2%. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.85-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and a 1.11-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq. The S&P 500 posted 18 new 52-week highs and no new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 63 new highs and 53 new lows.
