New ‘NBC Nightly News' anchor Tom Llamas brings national broadcast to Chicago

Chicago Tribune6 hours ago
When former Chicago anchor Lester Holt ended his run as anchor of 'NBC Nightly News' on May 30 after 10 years in that role, he left some pretty big shoes to fill.
His successor, Tom Llamas, who last month became just the fourth anchor of the network's signature weeknight newscast in 40 years, has hit the ground running. In addition to the nightly 30-minute TV broadcast, Llamas is also doing double duty as host of a one-hour primetime newscast on the NBC News Now streaming network.
The shows, which run back-to-back, bridge the gap between traditional broadcast and streaming TV, and firmly establish Llamas as the new face of NBC News.
'My life has definitely changed,' Llamas, 46, told the Tribune. 'It's a great responsibility, but it's one I have been dreaming about and thinking about for a very long time.'
Born and raised in Miami to Cuban parents, Llamas is headed to Chicago this week to participate in the annual National Association of Hispanic Journalists conference, which is taking place Wednesday through Saturday at the Hilton Chicago on South Michigan Avenue.
While in town, Llamas is planning to anchor Thursday's 5:30 p.m. national newscast live from outside NBC Tower at Cityfront Plaza in the Streeterville neighborhood. The scheduled remote will mark the second time in his nascent role as the top NBC anchor that Llamas has taken the New York-based newscast on the road, after hosting earlier this week from the flood zone in Texas.
Llamas, who reported from Rome following the April death of Pope Francis, is hoping the Chicago newscast will include a segment on his papal successor, Pope Leo XIV, who grew up in south suburban Dolton as Robert Francis Prevost.
'I was there in the Vatican, and then Pope Leo emerges, the first American pope, and it's incredible,' Llamas said. 'It's a huge story. So I think we're going to be covering that as well.'
Since Llamas took the helm June 2, 'NBC Nightly News' has gained traction in the ratings, averaging more than 5.6 million total viewers last month, besting the 'CBS Evening News,' which averaged 3.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen data supplied by NBC.
'ABC World News Tonight' remained the top-rated evening newscast in June with nearly 7.2 million viewers, but NBC was the only network to gain ground in the key 25- to 54-year-old demo, closing the gap with ABC, according to Nielsen.
In Chicago, 'NBC Nightly News' was up 29% year-over-year in June among adults 25-to-54, according to Nielsen data supplied by NBC 5 Chicago.
Llamas has been in broadcast journalism for 25 years, starting as an NBC News overnight production assistant. A former anchor at WNBC-TV in New York, he joined ABC News as a correspondent in 2014, and became weekend anchor for 'World News Tonight' the following year.
In 2021, he rejoined NBC as senior national correspondent and anchor of 'Top Story' on NBC News Now. In March, NBC named Llamas to replace Holt, who previously announced he would step down after 10 years as the network's top anchor.
Llamas credits Holt and other mentors, as well as fortuitous timing, for his elevation to anchor and managing editor of 'NBC Nightly News.' Unlike his predecessor, whose broadcast résumé included a 14-year run in Chicago as a local TV news anchor, Llamas has spent most of his career in New York, where he lives in the suburbs with his wife and three kids.
But Llamas professes an 'obsession' with Chicago cuisine, which he plans to tie into his visit — whether on the air or behind the scenes.
'I don't know if we'll be doing a story, but I know I'm going to be eating,' Llamas said. 'So I'm going to be grabbing some beef sandwiches and some deep dish.'

Diddy received standing ovation from fellow inmates after jury found rapper not guilty on RICO charge: lawyer

Sean "Diddy" Combs reportedly received a standing ovation from his fellow inmates after being acquitted on the most serious charges brought against him 10 months ago. After hearing seven weeks of testimony from prosecution witnesses, Diddy's jury returned three not-guilty verdicts. The group of 12 originally announced they were deadlocked on the racketeering conspiracy charge, but later chose to acquit the rapper. Diddy returned to a standing ovation at MDC Brooklyn after the verdicts were read, according to his defense lawyer, Marc Agnifilo. "They all said: 'We never get to see anyone who beats the government,'" Agnifilo told The Associated Press. DIDDY JUDGE RULES RAPPER MUST REMAIN BEHIND BARS AS HE AWAITS SENTENCING "I said: 'Maybe it's your fate in life to be the guy who wins,'" he added. "They need to see that someone can win. I think he took that to heart." The jury found Diddy not guilty of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking on July 2. He was found guilty on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. He could be sentenced to 20 years in prison, as each count carries a 10-year maximum. LIKE WHAT YOU'RE READING? The federal judge pointed to Diddy's violence, including the InterContinental Hotel attack on his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, as reasoning for his decision to keep the rapper behind bars. The "Last Night" rapper will remain behind bars until his sentencing hearing, which was proposed to be held on October 3. The prosecution suggested four to five years for Combs' sentence. WATCH: DIDDY TRIAL WAS A 'COLOSSAL FAILURE BY THE PROSECUTION,' ATTORNEY MARK GERAGOS SAYS He claimed Diddy genuinely desires improvement and "realizes he has flaws like everyone else that he never worked on." Scarlett Johansson Reveals ‘Full Circle Moment' With Her Brother At Her J World Premiere, And I Love When She Reminds Us She's A Twin

Scarlett Johansson once said that for 'like 15 years,' she's wanted to be in a Jurassic Park movie. As luck would have it, her wish was granted, as she's now the lead ofJurassic World Rebirth. The prospect of getting to lead such a massive film seems cool enough on its own. However, during a premiere for the 2025 movie release, Johansson had a 'full circle moment' she had with her twin brother, and this is yet another sweet sibling story from the actress. The Lost in Translation alum is a birthday twin to longtime co-star Mark Ruffalo and even has a Black Widow look-alike on TikTok. However, Scarlett Johansson has a real twin brother of her own named Hunter, who's apparently a huge Jurassic Park fan. While at Rebirth's New York premiere, Scarlett told E! News just how much of a fan her twin bro is of the sci-fi thriller franchise: He was the loudest audience member. I knew that would be the case because he loves Jurassic so much and was like, there for it. It's incredibly sweet to hear that Scarlett Johansson has such immense support for her. Also, how cool must it be for Hunter to know that his sibling is now part of such an immense franchise? Of course, made the event a truly special moment for both of the siblings, however, was the fact that both siblings grew up loving the blockbuster dinosaur franchise. As Scarlett later said: He would've been there either way because he's a fan and the movie is so explosive. He was literally orchestrating the John Williams music and was just like, so loud. That was really fun because we saw the movie together when we were 9 or 10 in the theater, and here we are in this full circle moment. It's kind of crazy. While I definitely love this affection and shared fandom between siblings, I'm always delighted when Scarlett Johansson reminds us that she's a twin. It's a little celebrity tidbit that's easy to forget and still amuses a person when they're reminded of it. While we've seen celebrity siblings working side-by-side like the Olsen Twins or Tia and Tamera Mowry, some stars have twins who aren't in the entertainment business. For instance, Rami Malek's twin brother or Jon Heder's brother aren't working actors. I think it'd be cool if Scarlett and Hunter Johansson were to appear on screen together. However, given Scarlett's career, I'm glad that they can still share a moment like the one they had at the premiere. I also love the notion of Hunter orchestrating the great John Williams' music. Honestly, I'm sure plenty of fans would probably have a somewhat similarly visceral reaction to hearing that iconic Jurassic Park theme song. Scarlett Johansson may not bring up the fact that she's a twin all that often. However, her anecdotes about her sibling never disappoint whenever they come into play. I'm hopeful that both of the Johanssons will hold onto the memory of that cool-sounding New York premiere for years to come. At present, though, fans can check out Jurassic World Rebirth for themselves, as it's currently playing in theaters nationwide.
