Fake tutor tries to meet child for sex acts, feds say. Florida cops were waiting

Miami Heralda day ago
A man accused of posing as a tutor in a local Facebook group found Florida deputies waiting for him when he tried to meet a 12-year-old girl for sex acts, court documents say.
Now, Kevin Patrick Wilson, 39, of Ponte Vedra, will spend the next decade in federal prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida.
His court-appointed defense attorney did not immediately return McClatchy News' request for comment July 15.
Wilson was arrested by St. Johns County sheriff's deputies the evening of July 24, 2024, after prosecutors said he had been communicating with someone he believed was the guardian of the 12-year-old girl.
It was actually an undercover detective pretending to be the caregiver for the child, who was a decoy, according to prosecutors.
The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office and the FBI began investigating Wilson in response to a tip from a woman that came in four days before his arrest, according to prosecutors.
On July 20, 2024, Wilson responded to a Facebook post shared by the woman in a 'St. Augustine Jobs' group, court documents say.
In her post, the woman wrote she was looking for a math and writing tutor for a child in sixth grade, court documents say.
Wilson commented under her post, but pretended to be his wife and wrote, 'Hi please text my husband Kevin on his cell phone number…,' according to prosecutors.
When the woman texted the phone number Wilson provided, she told Wilson she needed a tutor for an 11-year-old, prosecutors wrote in court filings.
Then, Wilson 'sent a photo of himself and asked for a photo of the child,' prosecutors said.
The woman stopped texting Wilson afterward and informed the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office of their conversation, according to prosecutors.
The sheriff's office set up a sting operation that involved an undercover detective texting Wilson a few days later, pretending to be the guardian of a 12-year-old girl, prosecutors said.
After the detective asked Wilson about tutoring services for the fake child, Wilson 'began discussing sexual topics involving the purported 12-year-old,' court documents say.
Wilson talked about 'meeting the 'child' to perform sexual acts,' prosecutors said.
At certain points, Wilson was under the impression that he was texting and speaking with the girl directly, but he was communicating with additional undercover detectives instead, according to prosecutors.
Wilson then tried luring the 12-year-old girl into sex acts by arranging a meeting with the detective posing as her guardian on July 24, 2024, prosecutors said.
'Wilson traveled to the predetermined meeting location and was arrested,' prosecutors said.
On March 12, Wilson pleaded guilty to attempted enticement and coercion of a minor to engage in sexual activity, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
He was sentenced to 10 years in prison on July 10, court records show.
Days after his arrest, Wilson's neighbor, Kathy Bargar, told Action News Jax that she was shocked to learn he was taken into custody, she told Action News Jax.
'You never know who's living next door to you,' Bargar said in an interview with the TV station.
'It's devastating, I can't believe it,' she added.
Concerns or suspicions about child sexual exploitation can be reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's CyberTipline online or by calling 1-800-843-5678.

‘I'm gonna go postal.' Mail carrier purposely hits USPS vehicle in VA, feds say

A woman working for the U.S. Postal Service 'became violent' when she lost her phone and blamed her co-workers, then purposely crashed into a USPS vehicle, totaling it in the Virginia parking lot, according to federal court filings. Lolita Brickhouse, 31, pleaded guilty on July 15 to causing more than $42,000 in damage at the USPS mail delivery facility in Falls Church, about a 5-mile drive west from Arlington, on Jan. 16, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia said in a news release. Now Brickhouse, of Falls Church, is facing up to 10 years in prison on a charge of destruction of government property exceeding $1,000 in damage, according to federal prosecutors. Her federal public defender did not immediately return McClatchy News' request for comment July 16. After Brickhouse's shift as a mail carrier ended the evening of Jan. 16, she left the USPS facility but went back to look for her cellphone, a federal agent wrote in an affidavit. When she could not find her phone with the help of her supervisor, she accused her co-workers of stealing it, the affidavit says. According to the filing, Brickhouse then knocked down a garbage can and declared to her supervisor: 'I'm gonna go postal.' The postal inspector investigating Brickhouse wrote in the affidavit that 'this phrase has been used to refer to a series of incidents where Postal workers shot and killed their supervisors, co-workers, police, and the general public.' After the comment, Brickhouse was accused of knocking off an array of items from her supervisor's desk, including an iPad, binders and keys. She also 'personally insulted her supervisors and coworkers and taunted them to call the police,' prosecutors said. Brickhouse then grabbed the keys to a USPS vehicle in the parking lot, got inside and drove into another USPS vehicle, causing it to hit a third vehicle, according to prosecutors. Following the crash, Brickhouse smashed a driver-side window with her metal water bottle, prosecutors said. In total, she caused $42,376.95 in damage to the three USPS vehicles, according to a statement of facts. Prosecutors argued that Brickhouse's actions were 'willful, intentional, knowing, and deliberate, and were not committed by mistake, accident, or other innocent reason.' Her sentencing is set for Oct. 16, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Electric bike could hold answer to 'reckless' shooting

An image is being circulated as police hunt a rider who is wanted in connection with a shooting last month. It was reported to police that a man wearing a balaclava had approached a house on Leyfield Road, West Derby, and opened fire - causing damage to the front door - at around 8.10pm on June 2. No one was hurt in the shooting, although one person was described as being "badly shaken", and police labelled the incident a "reckless act". At the time, police forensic officers and detective inspectors could be seen investigating the area in front of a property on Leyfield Road, as well as examining a vehicle. A cordon was in place on the street. A CCTV image has now been released by police of a person dressed in all black and a face covering while riding an electric bike, with the detectives hoping people may recognise the bike and trigger memories of the evening in question. READ MORE: Man and woman fighting for their lives after 'arson attack' READ MORE: M62 live traffic updates with 'long delays' after crash Police believe the rider could have information about the incident. Detective Inspector John Mullen said: 'We hope that someone may recognise the bike and be able to provide us with what could be vital information as we continue to investigate this serious incident. 'We want to trace the bike and ultimately speak to the rider because we believe he could have information about what happened. 'To fire a gun in our community is completely unacceptable, and we are doing everything within our power to find who the person is and bring him to justice. 'Thankfully no one was injured, but this was clearly a reckless act that could have had serious if not fatal consequences. The occupier of the house was left badly shaken by the incident. 'If you have any information about what happened or you recognise the bike, please come forward and let us know as a matter of urgency.'
