Paramedic who tricked woman into abortion jailed for 10 years
Stephen Doohan, 33, was married when he met the woman on holiday in Spain in 2021 and began a long-distance relationship.
In March 2023, the woman travelled to Edinburgh to see him after learning she was pregnant, the High Court in Glasgow heard.
On March 17, Doohan inserted an abortion drug in her vagina without her knowledge during consensual sex, and the following day insisted on seeing her underwear after she noticed white discharge, the court heard.
Doohan had previously pleaded guilty to sexual assault and depositing a drug into her vagina causing her to abort, and depositing with intent to cause her to abort.
On Monday at the High Court in Glasgow, he was sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison.
The court heard that Doohan convinced the woman to lie to medics at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary because he thought he would be arrested if she told the truth.
The victim attended another regional hospital with her sister and was told that she was having a miscarriage.
The court heard that in May 2023, the woman complained to the Scottish Ambulance Service, which launched an investigation.
It revealed that on March 14, the day the woman told Doohan she was pregnant, he used a work intranet to search for abortion drugs, the court was told.
Police were then called in.
Sentencing, judge Lord Colbeck said: 'You put her through considerable pain over a number of days, and left her facing a lifetime of pain and loss.'
He also said Doohan caused 'long-term psychological injury' to his victim.
The court heard that the crimes occurred over 48 hours, starting on March 17 at Doohan's flat in Edinburgh.
Lord Colbeck said that Doohan had told the victim that he did not want children, but she later became pregnant.
The judge said: 'She felt something hard being inserted into her vagina and believed this was a sex toy.'
However, the following day, after discovering unusual discharge in her underwear, and suffering stomach cramps, she returned to Doohan's flat.
The judge said: 'She took some diazepam and went into a deep sleep, and felt you initiating sexual contact.
'She felt you inserting something hard from under the mattress. She was suspicious of your actions.
'When you went to the bathroom, she took the opportunity to look under the mattress.'
The woman found some tablets hidden under the mattress, the court heard.
Lord Colbeck added: 'The complainer then carried out an internet search for abortion tablets and confronted you over your actions.'
The court heard that Doohan 'rehearsed what she was to say' before they attended hospital in Edinburgh due to stomach cramps on March 18, and the day after, she attended a regional hospital with her sister so she could 'disclose' what had happened, but was told she was having a miscarriage.
Lord Colbeck said: 'You planned out what you did to your victim using resources available to you as a paramedic.'
Defending, Mark Stewart KC, said: 'I express Mr Doohan's deep sorrow and regret for the actions he is now in the court charged with.
'His position is that he is filled with remorse for the harm he has caused, and the breach of trust his actions represented.'
The court heard that Doohan has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and that he had no previous convictions.
Mr Stewart described Doohan's life as 'positive and useful'.

Dunn County delay postpones Eau Claire child pornography proceeding
EAU CLAIRE — Developments in a local child pornography prosecution show how entanglements in other counties can affect proceedings. Branden Molinaro, 24, faces five counts of possession of child pornography, along with single counts of exposing a child to harmful material and use of a computer to facilitate a child sex crime. Those charges are in Eau Claire County, where a hearing had been scheduled for Monday. But the court postponed the hearing at the request of the defense, which wanted the hearing delayed until after Molinaro's sentencing in another case in Dunn County. The catch? The Dunn County case was reactivated by the prosecution in Eau Claire County. In January 2023 Molinaro reached a deferred acceptance of guilty plea agreement involving charges of second degree sexual assault of a child and sexual intercourse with a child 16 or older when the offender is age 19 or older. He pleaded no contest to the latter charge in exchange for a deferred sentencing on the sexual assault charge. Under the agreement, Molinaro could have seen the charge expunged had he stayed out of trouble for three years. The Eau Claire County charges, filed slightly more than two years later, prompted prosecutors to ask the court to revoke Molinaro's release. Judge Luke Wagner agreed in March, sending Molinaro to the Dunn County Jail. His sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 24. The sexual assault charge is a Class C felony, which could carry a penalty of up to 40 years in prison and fines of up to $100,000. That sentencing, in turn, could have an effect on the Eau Claire County case. Molinaro's attorney wants to see what the outcome is in Menomonie before the other case proceeds. She asked for a hearing 45-60 days after the sentencing. Court records show Judge John Manydeeds approved the request. So why, knowing the sentencing could affect the Eau Claire County case, was a hearing set for July? At the time of scheduling that fit the sentencing, which was originally scheduled for June 9. A May motion saw it pushed back by more than three months. The criminal complaint in the Eau Claire case says authorities got a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about someone using Snapchat for child enticement and child pornography. Investigators linked the account to Molinaro, who they say posed as a teen when communicating with the victims. In one conversation he sent a photo of his genitals and received the reply 'WTF IM 13.' He responded with a claim he was 15. In all, investigators said they found more than 30 cases in which Molinaro sent pornographic images and videos to 'individuals who made comments stating they were under 18.' When investigators spoke to Molinaro, he immediately asserted his right to an attorney. He was subsequently arrested.

Police have ‘proportionate and considered' plan ahead of Glasgow Kneecap gig
Police Scotland say they have a 'proportionate and considered policing plan' ahead of Kneecap's gig in Glasgow, which replaces their cancelled slot at the TRNSMT festival. Kneecap were axed from the line-up of TRNSMT in the city amid a row over an investigation by counter-terror police into rapper Mo Chara, who is accused of terrorism offences related to a Hezbollah flag he allegedly held up on stage. The satirical Belfast rap group, who perform in Irish, have been outspoken critics of the war in Gaza and said the prosecution – following an investigation by the Met Police – is linked to their views on Palestine. TRNSMT cancelled Kneecap's performance at the end of May over safety concerns by Police Scotland. On Tuesday, they are set to perform a sold-out gig at the O2 Academy in Glasgow, days before TRNSMT begins on Friday. As well as Kneecap, Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar are also performing in Glasgow on Tuesday. Police Scotland say they will aim to minimise disruption in the city. In May, First Minister John Swinney urged for TRNSMT to cancel the performance on July 11, saying that 'organisers of TRNSMT have got to consider that issue.' Mo Chara, also known as Liam Og O hAnnaidh was charged under the name Liam O'Hanna by the Metropolitan Police in May, over the alleged display of a Hezbollah flag at a gig, and appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on June 18. The furore led to calls from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch for Glastonbury to cancel a performance from the Belfast rappers on June 28, which the festival organisers did not do. Despite being cancelled from TRNSMT, Kneecap are still due to perform scheduled shows at 2000trees rock festival on July 10, Wythenshawe Park in Manchester on August 15 and Belfast Vital on August 29 – nine days after O hAnnaidh's next court appearance. At the last hearing, prosecutor Michael Bisgrove said: 'It's not about Mr O hAnnaidh's support for the people of Palestine or his criticism of Israel. 'He's well within his rights to voice his opinions and solidarity, as is anybody else. 'The allegation in this case is a wholly different thing and deals with a video recording showing that, in November of last year, Mr O hAnnaidh wore and displayed the flag of Hezbollah, a proscribed terrorist organisation, while saying 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah'.' Kneecap have said they have 'never supported' Hamas or Hezbollah, which are banned in the UK. Superintendent Paul Douglas said: 'We are aware of a number of events and concerts due to take place in the Greater Glasgow area in the week beginning Monday July 7 2025. 'A proportionate and considered policing plan is in place within the city and we are working with a number of stakeholders to ensure the safety of all those attending these events and where possible minimise disruption to the people of Glasgow.'
