Trump's unprecedented second state visit to UK confirmed for September

Trump, who is a big supporter of the royal family, particularly of the monarch, will be accompanied by his wife, Melania Trump during the three-day visit, the palace confirmed.
No US president has been invited for a second state visit. Trump previously enjoyed the pomp and pageantry of the state visit in 2019 during his first term when he was hosted by
Charles' late mother,
Queen Elizabeth
The invitation for the second state visit from the king was hand-delivered by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in February during a meeting at the White House.
After reading it,
Trump said it was a 'great, great honour' and appeared particularly pleased by the fact he will be staying at Windsor Castle, to the west of the capital. 'That's really something,' he said.

Precedent for second-term US presidents who have already made a state visit is usually tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle, as was the case for George W. Bush and
Barack Obama
State visits are ceremonial meetings between heads of state that are used to honour friendly nations and sometimes smooth relations between rivals. While the king formally issues the invitation for a state visit, he does so on the advice of the elected government.

Indonesia's Prabowo reaches ‘landmark deal' with Trump, saying trade talks will continue
Read more about this: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto welcomed a tariff deal with the US on July 17, 2025, calling Donald Trump a 'tough negotiator'. Prabowo said Jakarta and Washington had reached a mutual understanding and planned to continue negotiations. The agreement between the two countries reportedly would lead to a reduction in proposed US tariffs from 32 per cent to 19 per cent. The deal was among only a handful reached since the Trump administration announced plans to implement levies on most countries. The US leader had recently set an August 1 deadline for negotiations.

Japanese car exports to US hit the skids
Japanese car exports to US hit the skids Cars await export at a port in Yokohama. File photo: Reuters Japanese auto exports to the United States tumbled more than a quarter in June, official data showed on Thursday, amid growing concern at the failure of Tokyo to strike a deal to avoid the worst of Donald Trump's tariffs. Roughly 8 percent of jobs are tied to the auto industry in Japan, which is home to the world's top-selling carmaker Toyota as well as Honda, Nissan and other giants. The government is seeking relief from 25 percent US vehicle tariffs and other trade levies due to come into force on August 1, but no agreement has been reached despite several rounds of talks. Japan posted a trade surplus in the three months in June, with exports exceeding the value of imports by 153.1 billion yen (HK$8.35 billion). Exports to the United States fell 11.4 percent year on year to 1.7 trillion yen, with autos down 26.7 percent, finance ministry data showed. Shipments of pharmaceutical drugs and auto parts also contributed to the decline, the ministry said. Japan's trade surplus with the United States shrank 22.9 percent year on year in June – the second straight monthly contraction, even as imports from the country slipped 2 percent. Japan, a key US ally and its biggest investor, is subject to the same 10 percent baseline tariffs imposed on most nations plus steeper levies on cars, steel and aluminium. Trump also announced an additional 24 percent "reciprocal" toll on Japan in early April but later paused it along with similar measures on other countries. But he informed a number of trading partners this month of new country-specific rates, hitting Japan with a 25-percent tax, up from the 24 percent announced in April. The levies will be applied from August 1. Reports said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was expected to visit the World Expo in Osaka this weekend and meet Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Tokyo.
