Louis Vuitton has unveiled The Louis, a life-size cruise ship-inspired concept store in the heart of Shanghai. Located at the front plaza of HKRI Taikoo Hui on Nanjing West Road, this 30-metre-tall structure spans three levels and 1,600 square metres, blending retail, exhibition, and hospitality spaces under one roof.
Paying tribute to the brand's 19th-century legacy of crafting hard-sided travel trunks, The Louis reimagines the spirit of exploration and luxury through architecture. The vessel-like structure not only nods to Shanghai's maritime past but also symbolises Louis Vuitton's evolution from a luggage maker to a cultural institution.
'This ship-shaped decoration echoes Shanghai's urban spirit of 'embracing all rivers and seas',' said Wu Yue, president of LVMH Greater China.
Inside, visitors enter through a visually immersive archway called the Trunkscape, featuring monogram canvas trunks set against ever-changing LED nature scenes. The main exhibition, 'Louis Vuitton Extraordinary Journey,' spans two floors and ten thematic rooms that explore the maison's deep connection to maritime culture and its history.
Highlights include the Origins room—filled with archival material about the brand's founders—and the Voyage room, which presents whimsical bag designs and customised travel pieces once owned by legendary globetrotters.
The exhibition continues with rooms dedicated to Louis Vuitton's perfume and fashion histories, alongside the Books room, which features rare writings and sketches by Gaston-Louis Vuitton. Meanwhile, the Sports room displays purpose-built trophy trunks for events such as Formula 1, FIFA and the Olympics.
The journey culminates in the Workshop and Testing areas, where visitors can watch artisans at work, offering a rare look at the craftsmanship behind the brand.
The concept was designed in collaboration with architectural firm OMA, led by Shohei Shigematsu, who emphasised the trunk as the core identity of Louis Vuitton and used it as a structural and thematic element throughout the exhibition.
The installation reflects Shanghai's maritime spirit as the 'Gateway to the East,' linking the city's port culture with Louis Vuitton's legacy of travel and innovation.
On the top floor, Le Café Louis Vuitton offers a curated menu that fuses local Shanghai flavours with Western culinary influences. Led by executive chef Leonardo Zambrino, the bistro-style café features dishes such as monogram-shaped Chinese dumplings, a yuja-dressed Caesar salad, and signature desserts like Peach Charlotte with Jasmine Tea.
Louis Vuitton's president of LVMH Greater China, Wu Yue, described The Louis as a celebration of Shanghai's cosmopolitan and innovative spirit. Meanwhile, CEO Pietro Beccari called it a new chapter in the brand's cultural evolution, embodying the 'spirit of travelling' through ideas, emotions, and inspiration in a joyful way.
The Louis opens to the public on June 28, with free entry by timed reservation via the 'My LV' WeChat Mini Program. A 24-hour celebration will follow, featuring tai chi at sunrise, an illustration workshop, a culinary masterclass, and performances by local artists. Related

MIRI (June 28): The transformation of Some Shak Lung Kung Temple from a small hillside shrine into a prominent religious and tourism landmark stands as a powerful symbol of perseverance and unity within the local Chinese community, said Sarawak Transport Minister, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. He made the remarks during a grand banquet celebrating the recognition of the temple's Tow Boo Kong Nine Emperor Gods as the 27th Seal-Holding Sacred Palace of Malaysia Tow Boo Kong Temple on Friday. 'What began as a humble temple by the hillside has now become a majestic landmark admired by all,' said the Senadin assemblyman, highlighting the temple's decades-long journey to secure land and establish its current structure. He emphasised that the temple, now a magnet for devotees and tourists alike, is not only a place of worship but also a representation of Miri's cultural and tourism potential. 'This transformation would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the community, the leadership of Sea Dragon Master Ng Khien Ku, and the strong backing of the Sarawak government,' he added. The state minister, who had been closely involved with the temple for over 30 years, recounted the early struggles, from land donations being withdrawn after ground-breaking ceremonies to losing sites due to government development plans. 'Despite these setbacks, the temple committee persevered and eventually secured a permanent site at Jalan Jee Foh 9, overcoming stiff competition from other associations,' he said. 'Today, the temple stands as a striking symbol of Miri's cultural landscape, featuring a grand hall that accommodates over 1,000 guests and a twin-dragon gate that has become a local icon.' Lee also revealed that over RM20 million had been invested into the temple's development, part of which was funded by the Sarawak government. 'The story of Some Shak Lung Kung Temple is more than just a religious journey – it embodies the resilience of our people and our collective dedication to preserving cultural heritage,' he added. The event, attended by over 1,000 guests from across Malaysia and also from Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, and Brunei, also brought together representatives of more than 60 affiliated temples. A highlight of the banquet was the presentation of a RM300,000 grant by the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor), proposed by the Pujut constituency. The grant would be used to complete the infrastructure of the temple's new meeting hall, which could accommodate over 1,000 guests at any given time. A pet influencer from China has gone viral for raising a Bengal tiger worth more than one million yuan (US$140,000) and attracting over 4 million followers on mainland social media. Gong is a young Chinese woman living in Ukraine with her boyfriend. They share a suburban villa with a white tiger, two serval wildcats, a black jaguar, and a Bernese Mountain Dog. The couple have a 2,000-square-metre garden and a pool for the animals to enjoy. In her videos, Gong says that because of the value of the big cat, they have named it 'Million Gong'. She even paid an extra US$9,000 to skip the queue to buy it. Local officials regularly check the animals' papers and living conditions. Gong said her boyfriend studied in Ukraine and bought property while living there. He also runs a rental business. The couple now work full-time as content creators so they can spend more time with their animals. Million Gong, a female born in April last year, now weighs around 70kg and could grow to 150kg as an adult. She currently lives inside the villa, though Gong plans to build her a special outdoor compound as she gets bigger. White tigers no longer exist in the wild, and there are only about 200 in captivity. In Chinese culture, they are seen as a sacred symbol of power and justice. The animal's monthly food bill is about 15,000 yuan (US$2,000). That includes kilograms of beef plus snacks like chicken, rabbit, lamb, and vitamins. She is toilet trained and goes to a designated spot, with another 1,200 yuan (US$170) spent monthly on disposable mats designed for urination and defecation indoors. Million Gong often wrecks furniture, adding to the cost of her upkeep. Her owner said she might consider spaying her if no mate turns up. Also, she once choked on beef from overeating, loves milk and chicken legs, hates baths and nail trims, and always grooms herself before bed. While Gong studies, Million Gong lies beside her, plays with her pens and gently licks her hand. Many netizens have fallen for what Gong calls her 'silly but adorable' tiger. One online observer said: 'My heart is melting because of Million Gong! She is nothing like the king of beasts, just a spoiled little kitty.' While another warned: 'No matter how cute she is now, be careful! Million Gong is still a carnivore.' 'Trust Gong and her boyfriend.
