At MoMA, designs for living

Fun has its limits, though, as does familiarity. An even greater value afforded by 'Pirouette' has to do with unfamiliarity. The first thing a visitor sees on entering the exhibition is a 7-foot-tall ball. This remarkable device is a Mine Kafon wind-powered deminer. Designed by Massoud Hassani in 2011, it's made of nothing more elaborate than bamboo and biodegradable plastics. Its purpose is to roll over land where mines are suspected to be so as to detonate them. It's hard to imagine an object of greater, or sadder, utility — unless it's the Middle Upper Arm Circumference measuring device, or Bracelet of Life, developed by Doctors Without Borders in response to the Sudanese famine of 1998. Unlike the deminer, it's easy to miss among the the more than 100 items in 'Pirouette.' Slipped over a young child's upper arm, its color-coding gives an immediate indication of the degree he or she might be malnourished. The Bracelet of Life is at once a testament to human ingenuity and indictment of human indifference. Advertisement Apple, Inc., Steve Jobs, Jerry Manock. Macintosh 128K Home Computer, 1983. The Museum of Modern Art, New York. © Apple, Inc. Advertisement Both the deminer and Bracelet of Life leave considerations of mere aesthetics far behind. They're a reminder that good design can be a literal matter of life and death. The earliest design in 'Pirouette' dates from the 1870s, flat-bottomed paper bags. The most recent are from last year: Flaxwood Tiles, primarily made out of linseed oil, and the Monobloc Chair, made out of polypropylene. Materials can matter as much as appearance and purpose. Even when a design can be credited to a single individual, as with Hassani's, or small group the designer or designers aren't likely to be famous. You've likely heard of Spanx. It's far less likely you've heard of the woman who invented them, Sara Blakely. Décolletage Plastique Design Team, which was responsible for the Bic Cristal ballpoint pen — the world's best-selling writing implement — has a very cool name. But who can identify any of its members? Good design doesn't have to be anonymous, but it often is. Milton Glaser, I ♥ NY concept sketch, 1976. The Museum of Modern Art, New York. © 2024 NYS Dept. of Economic Development Some famous names do figure in 'Pirouette.' Ray and Charles Eames appear twice, with a rocking armchair and with a design for the nose of a military glider. Virgil Abloh is here (transparent DJ equipment), as is Milton Glaser, with several sketches for his 'I ❤ NY' logo. The most famous design name doesn't belong to a designer, per se. It's Steve Jobs. Along with Jerry Manock, who is credited for the design of Apple's Macintosh 128K home computer. What looked so futuristic then, looks so clunky now. Yes, there's a lesson in that. Sometimes design begins with appearance — Swatches, say. Sometimes it begins with function — the Sony Walkman. Ultimately, any successful design involves both. Kim Kardashian Shocks Fans With Barely-There Waist in Latest Look

Kim Kardashian is no stranger to turning heads with bold fashion risks. The brunette bombshell, 44, has once again shocked fans with a risqué look that highlights her famous curves and attenuates her tiny waistline. She donned a vintage Thierry Mugler black corset bodysuit in her latest Instagram photoshoot from July 22, captioning the masterpiece, "Mugler Magic." The reality mogul also shared a photo of a red-headed model rocking the look on the runway, which took place at a 1998 fashion show in Paris, per TMZ. Fans expressed their praise for Kardashian in the comments, with one writing, "One of the most iconic Mugler outfits." Another said, "Kim looking gorgeous. I love." "What's the waist size? I just need to know for reference," a third asked. However, others expressed their concern over the outfit's tight fit, with one fan commenting, "Slay diva but can you breathe?!" "The proportions look soooooo wonky and off," another said. This is not the first time the middle Kardashian sister has wowed in a tight-fitting corset. The reality megastar stunned with her hip-hugging gown and barely-there waist at the 2024 Met Gala in New York City. In a May 7, 2024 Instagram post featuring the waist-defying look, she wrote, in part, "Magical dreams do come true at the Met." Despite some controversy, the uber-successful entrepreneur has continued to push the barrier when it comes to fashion. On June 26, she shared an array of images from a Skims and Cavalli photoshoot, featuring Kris Jenner. The mother-daughter duo sported matching bold patterns, while Kardashian rocked a blonde wig that sat on top of her visible natural hair. Some took to the comments to express their confusion over the wig, with one writing, "Why the falling off wig." Another asked, "Kim why is the wig surfing on your head ?! Please go glue [it] down." However, other fans praised the look, calling it "iconic." "Both look super gorgeous," another wrote. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Melania Trump may get name on the Kennedy Opera house. What has she done as first lady?

A House panel advanced a measure on July 22 that would rename part of the Kennedy Center after first lady Melania Trump. The measure was voted on as part of a larger amendment approved by the Appropriations Committee. The larger House and Senate still have to vote on the spending bill. If it passes, the opera house would be named the "First Lady Melania Trump Opera House." Currently, the theater is just designated as the "Opera House," located between the "Concert Hall" and the "Eisenhower Theater." Melania Trump is President Donald Trump's third wife. While the president's first six months back in office have been a whirlwind of news, the first lady has largely stayed out of the spotlight. Here is what to know about the first lady: What is the 'Take it Down Act?' Melania Trump made rare White House appearance to sign it What has Melania Trump done as first lady? Melania Trump played a key role in advocating for the Take it Down Act, which the president signed into law on May 19. The law criminalizes nonconsensual, explicit images created by artificial intelligence, often known as deepfakes. Outside of that advocacy, she has appeared in her official capacity sparingly since her husband returned to office. One of her appearances was actually at the Kennedy Center for a showing of "Les Misérables," where she stood alongside Trump as the crowd booed and cheered. Through the spring, she spoke at the International Women of Courage Awards, attended Pope Francis' funeral (on her 55th birthday), helped host the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, and hosted a celebration of military mothers and a stamp unveiling honoring former first lady Barbara Bush. She also attended the Army's 250th anniversary parade in D.C., which occurred on Trump's 79th birthday. Melania Trump visited a D.C.-area children's hospital ahead of the Fourth of July, and appeared with the president as he signed the "Big Beautiful Bill" on the holiday. The following week, she visited the flood-ravaged areas of Texas the following week. Later, she attended FIFA Club World Cup final, where her husband went viral for staying on stage for the winning team's celebration. When did Donald Trump marry Melania? Donald Trump and model Melania Knauss got married in 2005. They met in 1998, two years after she moved to New York. Does Melania Trump have a college degree? No. According to the American Presidency Project, Melania Trump did not complete a degree but attended the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia for one year. Is Melania Trump an immigrant? Yes, she was born in Slovenia and moved to the U.S. in 1996. Slovenia is a country in Eastern Europe between Croatia and Austria. Melania Trump was born as Melanija Knavs but changed her name to Melania Knauss and later Melania Trump. She is the only first lady to become a naturalized citizen and the second first lady born outside the United States. (The first was Louisa Catherine Adams, married to John Quincy Adams, who was president from 1825-1829.)
