Welcome to the eve of the July 4 holiday, the official beginning of high summer.
Los Angeles is reeling. The area is still recovering from devastating wildfires. Mayor Karen Bass this week accused the Trump administration of waging an 'all-out assault on Los Angeles.' Roving teams of federal immigration agents have cast a pall of fear across many of the region's communities.
Would it be wrong to escape for a few hours into a beach read?
Abby Jimenez, a best-selling author of romances like 'The Friend Zone' and 'Just For the Summer' who also owns a wildly successful bakery, believes an escapist romance book can be just the thing for troubled times.
'Romance is a safe space,' she said in an interview. 'No matter what happens in the story, you're going to wrap it up in the end.'
'The genre is so inclusive. There is sweet romance. Spicy romance. Christian romance. There are romance thrillers. Queer romances. And then you get your happy ever after.'
Jimenez's latest book, 'Say You'll Remember Me,' came out this spring, just in time for beach read season. Though these days Jimenez lives in Minnesota, this book is partially set in Glendale, where she spent some of her childhood. This conversation has been edited for length and clarity.
What does a beach read mean to you?
There are just some books that are suitable for the pool and the sand over others. You're not going to be crying on the rest of your vacation.

LeBron downplays photo of himself at the Cavaliers practice facility

And every summer since it was built. I live here still and train every summer. Got damn yall bored man! Go get a plate of food somewhere and enjoy the 4th of July! Though LeBron James opted into the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, his future with the team has been under question because of a statement by Rich Paul about James evaluating what's best for him at this stage of his career. As a result, the moves of someone already under a microscope are being followed even more as people search for clues about what James might potentially do. If anyone knows this, it's James himself, who was photographed at the Cleveland Cavaliers' practice facility Friday with Cavs summer leaguer Denver Jones. Yet, in response to a tweet of the photo with a caption that said "LeBron at the Cavs practice facility today, James took a combative tone. "And every summer since it was built. I live here still and train every summer. Got damn yall bored man! Go get a plate of food somewhere and enjoy the 4th of July!" James said. The Hoop Central account certainly knew what it was doing by posting that caption, but it was harmless enough that James didn't need to respond so strongly... unless he wanted to draw more attention to the photo than it was already getting. In that case, mission accomplished.

Save Up To 50% On The 14 Best Lululemon 4th Of July Scores

This holiday weekend marks the arrival of 4th of July clothing sales across some of our favorite retailers, making it a great time to stock up on fashion essentials, including high-quality activewear from Lululemon. While the brand is not technically holding a dedicated 4th of July sale event for 2025, there are plenty of notable deals to be found in its new Summer Scores page. There, you can find a variety of stylish, functional and perennially popular Lululemon pieces, from the Align High-Rise Pant for women to the ABC Classic-Fit 5-Pocket Pant for men. We rounded up 14 deals worth shopping during Lululemon's Summer Scores event. Illustration: Forbes / Photo: Retailers Note that Summer Scores has replaced the 'We Made Too Much' section (a change that may be reversed come fall). For now, here are the 14 best Lululemon 4th of July sales you can shop now. Lululemon's Align leggings are incredibly popular, and for good reason: They're buttery soft, available in a wide range of colors and lightly supportive for low-impact workouts. (The pocketed version of these pants earned the top spot on our list of the best leggings for women.) Right now, you can snag a pair for 30% off in several of the brand's appealing shades. Made of the same material as Lululemon's famous Align leggings, this athletic dress is perfect for warmer days spent playing pickleball, running errands or simply grabbing coffee with friends. It has a built-in shelf bra and shorts for extra support and coverage. In our roundup of the best leggings for women, this style is our recommendation for working out, thanks to its compressive, sweat-wicking Everlux fabric. They're currently available in sizes 0 to 14, and come in 15 shades including Pink Dragonfruit and Espresso. While these soft and lightweight shorts are designed for low-impact workouts like yoga and pilates, a hidden waistband pocket makes it a great option for running errands in warmer weather. Choose from 4- or 6-inch lengths and sizes 0–20 (while supplies last). Lululemon's Swiftly line is designed with flat seams ro reduce chafing during more strenuous workouts. This cropped tee comes in 17 colors and features a mesh construction for breathability as well as Silverscent fabric to counteract the growth of odor-causing bacteria. It hits just above the waist, pairing well with high-rise shorts or leggings. These high-rise shorts float off the body for unrestricted movement in the studio and beyond. Front hand pockets with a hidden zipper pocket can store your phone, keys and wallet while four-way stretch fabric and a sweat-wicking waistband keep you flexible and dry when it's time to move. This lightweight tank top is made of Lululemon's ultrasoft Nulu fabric, which is also found in its signature Align leggings. It has a built-in shelf bra for support, and a gently sloping V-neckline that's flattering on everyone. The color Allspice is currently available in sizes 0 to 20, and dozens of other hues are available in limited sizing at a discount. This style is featured as our top performance pick on our list of the best casual pants for men, due to its smooth, highly stretchy fabric and excellent shape retention. Designed with a classic fit, these pants are incredibly versatile—you can wear them to dinner, the office, the golf course and everywhere in between. The Lululemon Commission Long-Sleeve Shirt is the definition of business-casual: It's sophisticated enough for happy hour, but thanks to its four-way stretch, it won't make you feel constricted. It's made of a blend of cotton and elastomultiester, which is crisp, soft and easy to launder. The shade Windmill is currently 50% off, available in sizes S to XXL. Designed with deep side pocket and a hidden zippered pocket, these shorts offer plenty of space for your essentials. They're roomy and breathable, with strategic mesh seaming in the back that keeps you cool as you sweat. Choose from cool neutrals and vibrant, eye-catching hues. This crewneck sweatshirt is smooth, stretchy and, of course, soft. The quick-drying modal blend fabric makes it a great choice for tossing on post-workout. It's currently available in sizes XS to XXL, in Blackened Pine and Nomad. This understated polo is designed with sweat-wicking fabric to keep you cool and stylish. It's also treated with the brand's No-Stink Zinc finish to inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria, so you can focus more on your golf swing and less on your scent. While it's cut in a slimmer fit through the chest and waist, four-way stretch ensures your mobility won't be limited. This short-sleeve shirt is perfect for sunny, casual days spent catching up with friends, hanging at the beach or sightseeing in a new city. The lightweight WovenAir fabric—which contains recycled polyester—dries easily and keeps you comfortable in hot weather. A pair of white sneakers is a men's fashion staple. Lululemon's take features a textured cotton canvas upper, a cushioned insole and a grippy rubber outsole. These shoes go with just about anything in your wardrobe, from jeans to shorts to joggers.

The underdogs of the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest are the real heroes. They do it for the love of the game.

When you picture the 4th of July, most people think of fireworks. That's "the big show," right? For some, sure. But for others, it's all about Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, held every year on the Coney Island Boardwalk in Brooklyn, New York. It's a truly American spectacle, watching people eat for sport — shoving as many hot dogs down their throats as they can, not due to hunger or for taste, but simply out of pure competition. And while it's impressive to watch men like 17-time winner Joey Chestnut (who ate 70 ½ hot dogs this year), and women like 11-time winner Miki Sudo (who scarfed down 33) eat more in 10 minutes than should be humanly possible, what's more impressive is the competitors near the end of the table. That's right, we're talking about those who are just there for the love of the game. Every year, the competition puts the men and women who are coming into the competition with the best records — the big dogs, so to speak — in the middle of the table, with, well, the underdogs toward the end. Those are the competitors who are there to try their best, but, barring something unthinkable, aren't likely to unseat someone who's won 10 or more times. Let's hear it for the underdogs Take competitor Cherish Brown, for example. The Ohio native earned a wild-card spot to compete in her third consecutive 4th of July contest. Ahead of the event, she told WFFT-TV, "I'm really always looking to improve personally, rather than beat anybody at the table." Brown added, "I can't really control what they're going to do. If they can eat 15-20 hot dogs, that's great for them, but I'm not going to punish myself if I can't eat that many. I'm just there to have a good time, and try to do better than last year." She finished this year's competition in 12th place, having eaten six hot dogs in 10 minutes, but we hope that didn't dampen her day. Later, in the men's competition, Indiana native Cameron Meade made his Nathan's debut, eating 20 ¾ hot dogs to finish in 15th place. Earlier this week, he told NBC Chicago he was inspired to participate in eating competitions after his friends were impressed by how much he ate at his university's dining hall. And though he came in last in his division, he's positioned well for next year — after all, he can only go up from here. No, these underdogs didn't win in the end, but we appreciate what they're doing all the same. Underdogs like Brown and Meade are not there because they expect to win, they're just there because they love doing what they do: Eating an ungodly number of hot dogs on a hot day, just because they can. In any sport — including competitive eating — not every player on the field can be the MVP, especially when competing against legends like Chestnut and Sudo. Watching them is a good reminder that perfectionism, like the leftover buns on the boardwalk, is for the birds, and if you have a dream, you should chase it. You don't have to be perfect, you just have to love what you do.
