Ahmad Zahid Flags Off ASEAN Unity Drive 2025 In Jakarta

Barnama22-04-2025
JAKARTA, April 22 (Bernama) -- The ASEAN Unity Drive 2025 (AUD 2025) reflects Malaysia's strong commitment to fostering regional integration, promoting sustainable mobility and advancing innovation across Southeast Asia, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Officiating the flag-off ceremony here today, he said the convoy, led by the Proton e.MAS 7 across nine ASEAN countries, was more than a physical expedition.
'It is a powerful statement of our collective ambition to integrate sustainability, innovation and regional cooperation into the future of mobility,' he said in a statement.
The flag-off ceremony, held at the Embassy of Malaysia in Jakarta, was also attended by ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn, Ambassador of Malaysia to Indonesia Datuk Syed Md Hasrin Tengku Hussin and Permanent Representative of Malaysia to ASEAN Sarah Al Bakri Devadason.
Organised by the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) with the support of the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), the landmark journey will mark the debut of the Proton e.MAS, featuring six electric vehicles alongside four Proton X series models traversing the ASEAN region.
The convoy will go on a remarkable 9,000-kilometre journey via two routes, with the northern route starting in Hanoi, Vietnam and passing through Laos, Cambodia and Thailand before reaching Malaysia, while the southern route begins in Manila, the Philippines, and travelling through Sabah, Brunei, Sarawak, Indonesia and Singapore before arriving in Malaysia.
Ahmad Zahid believes that this initiative not only highlights Malaysia's growing leadership in the electric vehicle and automotive innovation space, but also reflects the country's broader vision for a resilient and forward-looking ASEAN.
'I look forward to seeing the positive impact this journey will inspire across the region,' he added.
As the convoy moves on to its next destination in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam, it will continue engaging with stakeholders, governments and communities across ASEAN, reinforcing people-to-people connections and strengthening the shared aspirations for inclusive development.

Bursa Malaysia seen trading range-bound with upside bias this week

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Bursa Malaysia is expected to trade in cautious modet this week, but with an upside bias, with the US tariff deal deadline on July 9 in focus, analysts said. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng anticipates the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) to trend within the range of 1,530-1,560 points, representing its support and resistance levels. "The benchmark index has broken out of its consolidation range with strong volume, climbing above critical moving averages. "A bullish exponential moving average crossover and strengthening moving average convergence/divergence indicator, along with a relative strength index that has yet to peak, strengthen the case for a shift toward a more bullish trend,' he told Bernama. Echoing Thong, UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd's head of investment research, Mohd Sedek Jantan, said the local bourse is expected to experience heightened caution and intermittent volatility ahead, as investors closely monitor the evolving landscape of global trade policy. "Particular attention is centred on the 'Liberation Day' US tariff deadline of July 9, when elevated tariffs -ranging from 20 to 30 per cent- are expected to be reinstated on countries without formalised bilateral trade deals. "Malaysia, among others, may face renewed uncertainty should negotiations remain unresolved. US President Donald Trump has indicated that official notifications outlining new tariff rates will be issued imminently to affected trade partners,' he said. On a weekly basis, the barometer index advanced 22.03 points to 1,550.19 from 1,528.16 in the preceding week. The FBM Emas Index expanded 218.92 points to 11,617.72, the FBMT 100 Index rose 209.34 points to 11,390.70, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index garnered 276.69 points to 11,617.82. The FBM 70 Index climbed 516.38 points to 16,787.04, and the FBM ACE Index rose 51.64 points to 4,526.40. Across sectors, the Financial Services Index went up 54.12 points to 17,791.22, the Plantation Index surged 119.72 points to 7,448.74, and the Energy Index gained 8.93 points to 741.61. Turnover for the shortened trading week increased to 17.25 billion units worth RM12.62 billion from 11.68 billion units worth RM8.45 billion in the preceding week. The Main Market volume advanced to 9.22 billion units valued at RM11.41 billion against 5.40 billion units valued at RM7.39 billion previously. Warrant turnover improved to 6.62 billion units worth RM772.30 million versus 4.96 billion units worth RM655.61 million a week ago. The ACE Market volume ticked up to 1.40 billion units valued at RM437.52 million compared with 1.07 billion units valued at RM399.48 million a week earlier. - Bernama

Taiwanese rocket crashes in Japan's first launch backed by foreign capital

KUSHIRO (Japan), July 13 (Bernama-Kyodo) -- A Taiwanese rocket crashed shortly after lifting off from a private spaceport in northern Japan, failing in what would have been the first successful launch from Japanese soil of a rocket developed with foreign capital, according to Kyodo News Agency. The 12-metre rocket, dubbed "VP01", was launched by jtSPACE Co., a Japanese arm of a Taiwanese aerospace company, at 11:40 a.m. on Saturday, according to the operator of Hokkaido Spaceport. While the rocket's first stage likely separated and splashed down in the Pacific as planned, the second stage lost stability immediately after separation and came down in a restricted-access field near the spaceport. "The second stage was terminated after separation, as it was determined that the mission could no longer proceed," the port operator, Space Cotan Co., said in a press release. No injuries were reported. VP01 reached an altitude of four kilometres, significantly short of the target altitude of 100 km. Space Cotan said the rocket was brought down by its flight termination system. CEO Yoshinori Odagiri said the company will wait for the results of an investigation into what happened to the rocket's second stage. The test aimed to send the VP01, which measures 0.6 metre in diameter and weighs 1.4 tonnes, to an altitude of about 100 km, verify the rocket's performance, and support the development of an orbital launch vehicle capable of carrying a satellite, according to Space Cotan. - Bernama-Kyodo

Ringgit likely to be in active trade and move between 4.24-4.26 against US dollar this week

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The ringgit is expected to remain volatile this week, moving in the range between 4.24 and 4.26 against the US dollar, an analyst said. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid told Bernama that apart from the United States (US) tariff, the next key question is whether the Federal Reserve (Fed) would cut the interest rates. On that note, he said key data points would be the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) for June. Thus far, the inflation rate has been quite manageable during the 90-day pause period. "Obviously, the full implementation of reciprocal tariffs on August 1 would result in higher inflation, which could lead to the need to keep the Federal Fund Rate (FFR) steady as an ideal policy decision. "The US dollar index (DXY) has been gradually climbing and therefore, emerging market currencies, including the ringgit, could stay on the low side,' Mohd Afzanizam said. Meanwhile, SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes also said the ringgit is expected to trade within a narrow range ahead of the release of the US CPI next week, a key economic event likely to shape market direction and the Fed policy expectations. The upcoming US inflation report, due Tuesday, would be closely watched by financial markets as it could offer clear signals on the path of interest rates, he said. Innes said markets are particularly focused on the core CPI month-on-month figure, with 0.3 per cent seen as the critical threshold. "A softer-than-expected reading could revive hopes for a September rate cut by the Fed, potentially leading to a pullback in the US dollar and offering the ringgit some relief,' Innes said. However, he cautioned that a stronger print, particularly at 0.4 per cent or higher, would likely shift market expectations toward a more hawkish Fed, sparking renewed dollar strength. "In that scenario, the US dollar-ringgit pair could climb toward 4.2700, although any initial spike may be short-lived if profit-taking emerges,' he noted. He projected the ringgit to trade within a tactical range of 4.2400 to 4.2650, with market positioning expected to tighten further. "For now, the ringgit remains a passenger in a vehicle driven by US macro outcomes -- not a driver in its own right,' Innes added. On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the ringgit ended the week lower against the greenback, closing at 4.2475/2525 from 4.2180/2260 previously. The local note traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit appreciated vis-a-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8893/8929 from 2.9225/9282, and increased against the British pound to 5.7524/7592 from 5.7601/7710 last Friday. However, it marginally fell versus the euro to 4.9679/9737 from 4.9675/9770 at the end of last week. Against Asean currencies, the ringgit was traded lower. The local note was down against the Singapore dollar to 3.3186/3228 from 3.3114/3182, and narrowed versus the Indonesian rupiah to 261.8/262.3 from 260.6/261.2 previously. It weakened versus the Thai baht to 13.0668/0886 from 13.0302/0609 and declined against the Philippine peso at 7.52/7.53 from 7.47/7.49 on last Friday. -- Bernama
