Facing fears one jump at a time

Following more than a decade of rehabilitation after a car crash left him with severe brain damage, Queenstown resident Jesse Boulay is seizing life with both hands. Yesterday he tandem skydived with his friend Derek Smith.
Mr Boulay spent nearly a year in a coma after a crash on New Year's Day, 2010.

Despite doctors' prognosis he would be permanently incapacitated and dead within eight years, subsequent intense physio sessions and speech and occupational therapy have proven them wrong.
While there was no quick or easy process, Mr Boulay who is now 31, learned to walk, talk and care for himself again, buying and moving into his first apartment in 2014.
Now having developed his life and built his own fashion business, Remarkable, he has become a well-known identity in Queenstown. Yesterday he shifted his confidence a step further and faced his fears by taking a leap as a skydiver.

Mr Smith was persuaded to jump with Mr Boulay on the day as support. That in itself was no mean feat as Mr Smith had to overcome his own fears of parachuting as nine years ago he had a paragliding accident in which he crashed breaking both his spine and a femur.
"I never thought I'd be under a parachute again," he said.
Mr Walker said the flight was "pretty intense," but living locally and being able to get the view from a "hell of a vantage point," made it "pretty cool". At the end he said he was really pleased that he had shared the day with Mr Boulay on his adventure. — APL

Munro stepping down due to diagnosis

Anne Munro. PHOTO: SUPPLIED Mackenzie District Mayor Anne Munro is stepping aside due to her cancer diagnosis. She shared the news last year and testing has confirmed the cancer is metastatic. She said while treatment was ongoing, her prognosis remained uncertain and she had made the decision in the interest of continuity and stable leadership. "Although I've stayed up to date with council business, the work we do is complex and fast-moving. I'm simply not across the level of detail needed to provide the leadership our council and community deserve at this critical time," she said. Ms Munro said the council was navigating a time of significant change, including determining how to implement the government's Local Water Done Well reforms. She said she would not be seeking re-election in October. "Given the uncertainty surrounding my health, I cannot fully commit to serving our community in the years ahead," she said. Ms Munro served two terms as a councillor from October 2016, before being elected as mayor in 2022. She was diagnosed with cancer shortly before Christmas last year. Deputy mayor Karen Morgan would continue acting in the role until the election, she said. — APL

Surgeons amazed by burn victim's 'rapid healing'

Reuben Holt on Stewart Island. PHOTO: GIVE A LITTLE Life took a bad turn for a young Stewart Island man after he was engulfed by flames from a petrol accident on May 17. Reuben Holt, 18, was airlifted from Stewart Island to Christchurch Hospital to receive treatment for the severe burns to his face, arms and chest. A post from his parents on a crowdfunding page said their son had undergone several extensive surgeries, including skin grafts to his right arm and hands. Mr Holt had been supported in Christchurch by his family, The family, who returned home to Stewart Island last month, were now taking time to "get some good sleep in their own beds and deal with their exhaustion". "It has been an overwhelming and turbulent time for the family — but we are all doing OK. "Reuben's progress has been quite mind-blowing. "All the surgeons, consultants, nurses and therapists have been completely amazed by his rapid healing. "He has maintained his wonderful sense of humour and kindness throughout it all which I'm sure has helped his steady way forward." The road to recovery was far from over, with further surgeries and intensive physiotherapy required. A Givealittle page created by one of the island's 400 residents had raised $13,047 to support the family with travel, accommodation and other costs associated to Reuben's recovery and ongoing rehabilitation. The page has now closed. — APL
