Ozzy Osbourne obituary: Wild life of rock's 'prince of darkness'
He was born John Michael Osbourne in the Aston area of Birmingham, on 3 December 1948. His father Jack was a toolmaker, while his mother Lillian worked at the Lucas factory, which made car components. He picked up the nickname Ozzy at primary school and it stuck.Aside from gifting him his moniker, school was a dismal experience for young Osbourne. He suffered from dyslexia and what would now be termed attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).He left at 15 and wandered into a series of dead-end jobs, including some time spent working in a slaughterhouse, which allowed him to play practical jokes in pubs by putting cows' eyeballs in peoples' pints. He even turned his hand to crime but found he had little luck there either. A TV fell on him while he was burgling a house and he later spent six weeks in Birmingham's Winston Green prison after robbing a clothes shop.
Reunited
What saved him was music: the sound of the Beatles singing She Loves You out of a crackly transistor radio transformed his life."It was such an incredible explosion of happiness and hope," he later told writer Bryan Appleyard. "I used to dream - wouldn't it be great if Paul McCartney married my sister."He persuaded his dad to buy him a microphone and an amplifier and, together with a friend Terry 'Geezer' Butler, formed a band called Rare Breed - which lasted for just two performances.
The pair became part of a Blues outfit named Polka Tulk Blues, later renamed Earth, along with guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward. The band, intent on making what they called "scary music", rehearsed in a room opposite the local cinema - where a screening of the 1963 horror film, Black Sabbath, gave birth to the band's name and first hit."I didn't invent that sort of music," Ozzy later recalled. "When I look back at that song, Black Sabbath, I think, how did I even begin to think of a melody like that?"
Masterpiece
The song, written by Osbourne and Butler, opened their 1970 debut album which, despite a mauling from music critics, reached number eight in the UK charts and number 23 in the US.Further success followed with a string of best-selling albums including Paranoid, Master of Reality and Volume 4, all of which sold more than a million copies.By the time the band released Sabbath Bloody Sabbath in 1973, even the critics were beginning to heap praise on them.
One writer described it as a "masterpiece" and went on to say he thought the band had discovered a newfound sense of finesse and maturity. The 1975 album Sabotage also received critical praise, but by this time the band were beginning to unravel and Black Sabbath were destined to lose their momentum.Osbourne was already starting to succumb to the drink and drugs that would come to dominate his life. His unreliability became legendary and was beginning to irk fellow members of Black Sabbath.Family life was also under strain, with his addictions, affairs and frequent touring jeopardising his relationship with wife Thelma and their two children. The pair would later split.
Unfair
Osbourne had always covered up his insecurities by acting as the band's clown, but by now his antics were seriously hindering Sabbath's development. His relationship with Iommi had never been smooth and Ozzy began to resent what he saw as the guitarist's domination of the band.In 1978 he spent three months working on a solo project called Blizzard of Ozz, but returned to Sabbath to record the album Never Say Die.After a lacklustre tour, Osbourne was fired by the other members of Sabbath on the basis of his substance abuse, being replaced by Ronnie James Dio.
Osbourne later claimed that his dismissal was unfair, claiming: "We were all as bad as each other."The problem was that Ozzy was not as good at handling the effects of the myriad substances in which the whole band indulged. He resurrected his Blizzard of Ozz with the help of Sharon Arden, the daughter of Black Sabbath's manager Don Arden. The couple would later marry and go on to have three children - Aimee, Kelly and Jack. She also attempted to help him control his intake of drink and drugs. There were periods when he appeared to have kicked his addictions - but he often fell off the wagon.
Bark at the Moon
"If it wasn't for Sharon," he later told Appleyard, "I'd be long dead."Controversy was never far away. The most notorious incident was biting the head off a live bat while on stage in Iowa in 1982. He had been catapulting raw meat into the audience on tour, which prompted fans to throw things on stage in return. He claims he thought the bat was fake before he took a bite.He did not attempt to use the same excuse about the two doves whose heads he bit off during a record label meeting the previous year. His other exploits included being arrested for urinating on Texas war monument the Alamo while wearing one of Sharon's dresses; getting thrown out of the Dachau concentration camp for being drunk and disorderly while on a visit during a German tour; pulling a gun on Black Sabbath's drummer while on a bad acid trip; blacking out and waking up in the central reservation of a 12-lane freeway; and massacring the inhabitants of his chicken coop with a gun, sword and petrol while wearing a dressing gown and pair of wellies. That all added to Ozzy's legend, but in reality most of his behaviour was not very appealing or glamorous. He was a wreck, and the drink and drugs gave him a Jekyll and Hyde personality. In 1989, he woke up in jail to be told he had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder for strangling Sharon. He could not remember anything about it. She dropped the charges.
Meanwhile, his first solo album went platinum and the follow-ups, Diary of a Madman and Bark at the Moon, were also best-sellers.He toured extensively throughout the 1980s and 90s, as well as achieving huge commercial success with Ozzfest - a series of tours, mainly in the US, that featured bands across all genres of metal.Osbourne headlined most of the festivals and there were even appearances by his former Black Sabbath bandmates. Then In 2002, he and his family were catapulted to a new form of fame when they unwittingly pioneered reality TV as cameras captured the foul-mouthed (but affectionate) dysfunction of their home life.
Row
It was a huge success, even though the US broadcasts were heavily censored to remove Osbourne's frequent profanities - something that was not deemed necessary when the show aired in the UK.At the same time, Osbourne continued to record - but was forced to take a break in 2003 when he fell off a quad bike and sustained serious injuries. It was while he was recovering in hospital that he topped the UK singles charts for the first time, with a recording of the Black Sabbath song Changes, on which he sang a duet with his daughter Kelly.
Black Sabbath reunited in 2005, and again in subsequent years without drummer Bill Ward, and in 2013 went back to the top of the UK album charts - 43 years after their last number one, Paranoid. The resulting tour saw a newly-energised Ozzy: word and note perfect, fronting a band that had lost none of its old magic. In 2018, he claimed to have ditched the alcohol and the drugs and would be reining in his touring lifestyle."I have grandchildren now and I'm 70 years old and I don't want to be found dead in a hotel room somewhere," he told a journalist while promoting Ozzfest that year. However, he had other health issues to contend with. At first, he thought the shaking in his hands was a result of his lifetime of excess. But in 2007 he was diagonosed with a condition called Parkinsonian syndrome, then in 2019 with Parkinson's disease. He suffered spinal damage in a late-night fall the same year, which aggravated the injury he sustained in the quad-bike crash. Repeated surgeries had limited success. But he was determined to bow out of the public eye with a customary bang. He, Sharon and his old Black Sabbath bandmates lined up a farewell concert at Villa Park football stadium, which took place just over two weeks ago.An array of fellow rock legends - including Metallica, Guns N' Roses and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler - lined up to perform and pay homage to him and Sabbath's influence.Osbourne himself performed seated because of his mobility problems, but managed to recapture his old magic - belting out his hits while clapping, waving his arms and pulling wild-eyed looks, just like old times."I'm proud of what I've achieved with my life," he once told an interviewer. "You couldn't have written my life story if you'd been the best writer in the world".

Luke Littler, 18, sends blunt message to Gary Anderson as darts star hits back at ‘boring' jibe
LUKE LITTLER has pushed back on Gary Anderson's comments labelling young darts stars as 'boring.' Anderson, 54, lashed out at young players' attitudes in his post-match interview after beating Luke Woodhouse at the World Matchplay last Sunday. 3 Anderson said: "The youngsters are boring. Absolutely boring. "You talk to them, they're too busy looking at their phone. "They're sitting on their phones with their bloody earphones in. Don't talk to you. It's a completely different life." Littler gave his blunt, tongue-in-cheek response in a press conference at the World Matchplay. He said: "A lot of us players, we just get on with our thing. "Like Gary Anderson said, we're boring so that's what we do." Littler, the young prodigy of modern darts, was clearly stung by the comments but managed to take them in good sport. Since Anderson's jibe, the two-time world champion has been knocked out of the World Matchplay by Englishman Stephen Bunting. 3 Littler has battled his way into the final four with a victory over Andrew Gilding, spurred on by his new girlfriend. He now faces Josh Rock in the semi-finals at the Winter Garden later today. Should he win, he will face either James Wade or Jonny Clayton in the final, for a chance to add to his already incredible pool of prize money. List of all-time Darts World Champions BELOW is a list of darts world champions by year. The list does not include winners from the pre-Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) era or BDO world champions. Alison Hammond, 50, shares rare picture of toyboy lover David, 27, as loved-up couple enjoy summer holidays together
Alison Hammond shared a rare picture of her boyfriend David Putman on Saturday as the couple enjoy the summer holidays together. The This Morning presenter, 50, took to Instagram to share the loved-up snap of her with David, 27. Boasting large smiles, Alison appeared smitten and happy-than-ever with her age gap lover as they set off on their holidays together. The pair could be seen hugging for the camera while the sun shone down on them as they coordinated their outfits. Alison wore a blue blouse while David opted for a blue shirt as they both donned black sunglasses and caps to protect them from the UV rays. She captioned the sweet post with love heart emojis: 'Happy holidays to you all. Remember always choose love.' Alison tends to keep her relationship private, with David sparingly featuring on her social media profiles. She first went public with the Russian masseur and model in April 2024 by posting a series of pictures online with him. Previously speaking about their relationship, Alison explained how David is very supportive of her and her TV career. She told Heat magazine: 'He loves it. He just supports me. Anybody who I bring into my life supports me and whatever I do. They're so happy for me. 'I don't like to go into detail about him, because it's my private life, and I want to respect his life as well. But you know I'm loved-up, everyone knows that!' When asked about whether she would like to get married, the star didn't rule it out, saying: 'I'd never say no. I might marry myself...' Meanwhile, directly addressing their age gap, she told Good Housekeeping in January: 'I can see how, on paper, you'd notice the age difference. 'But honestly, when we see the word "toyboy" written about us, it bears no relation to what we have at all. Previously gushing over David, Alison said: 'He just supports me. Anybody who I bring into my life supports me and whatever I do. They're so happy for me' 'Yes, I'm 22 years older than he is, but if you saw us together, you'd understand. People have said to me: "We get it now." He's so mature and sensible, and I'm so not.' She added: 'And the things he says to just so lovely. It's like a jigsaw; we fit and it all comes together.' Alison's son Aidan, 20, has also given her relationship his seal of approval and has even given her advice. They both appeared on ITV gameshow Romesh Ranganathan's Parents' Evening last year when Alison admitted she 'overshares' with her son. The pair were asked certain questions and had to vote who was better at each topic, with one question being: 'Who's better at giving advice?' Aidan believed he was better at advice which shocked Alison at first before she then partly agreed saying: 'When it comes to relationship advice you're very good!' But she added: 'But when it comes to career advice I'm not sure!' They were then asked who was the biggest oversharer and both voted for Alison - with Alison admitting: 'Yeah maybe I overshare a little bit. I'll probably overshare in the show!'

Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger cuts a dapper figure as he celebrates his 82nd birthday by partying through the night at A-list bash - as the Gallagher clan descend on SAME venue for Oasis afterparty
The Rolling Stones and Oasis had quite the unlikely crossover on Friday night as both clans descended on the same venue for two separate A-list parties. Mick Jagger celebrated his 82nd birthday in style as he hosted a star-studded bash at private club The Rex Rooms, which is co-owned by Jason Momoa. It was a night of rock royalty as his bandmate Ronnie Wood joined the festivities along with stars including Sacha Baron Cohen and Jimmy Carr, while Mick's ex-wives and kids were also in attendance. However, in an unlikely crossover, the Gallagher clan also descended on the same venue as they booked out a room in the venue for an Oasis afterparty. After Noel and Liam Gallagher wrapped up their first London show in 16 years, the Gallagher offspring including Lennon, 25, and Gene, 24, headed to The Rex Rooms to celebrate. For his A-list bash, Mick cut a dapper figure in a white silk shirt and black trousers, which he styled with a spotted black jacket. He stepped out alongside his fiancée Melanie Hamrick, who put on a very leggy display in a black sparkling mini dress. She added to her frame in a pair of pointed black heels and toted her essentials in a black handbag as she stepped out hand-in-hand with Mick. Mick and Melanie have been together since 2014 and they share a son, eight-year-old Deveraux, together, who is the rock star's eighth child. Also in attendance was Mick's daughter Georgia May, 33, who oozed sophistication in a black strapped dress with a side split. The supermodel completed her look with a pair of pointed heels and stepped out alongside her partner, skateboarder Cambryan Sedlick. It was also quite the Rolling Stones reunion as Mick's bandmate Ronnie Wood, who put on a vibrant display in a blue T-shirt patterned with butterflies. He completed his look with navy trousers and a beige blazer and carried a bright pink 'Happy Birthday' gift bag as he came ready with a gift for Mick. Ronnie looked as loved-up as ever with his wife Sally, 46, as they stepped out arm-in-arm for the star-studded occasion. He kept comfortable in a pair of black trainers and appeared to be in jovial spirits as he flashed a huge smile while getting out of his car She added to her frame in a pair of pointed black heels and toted her essentials in a black handbag as she stepped out hand-in-hand with Mick She cut an elegant figure in a black silk mini dress and a black cardigan and she appeared to be in jovial spirits as she flashed a huge smile Mick's ex-wives also stepped out en masse to celebrate with him as Jerry Hall - who is the mother of Georgia May and Gabriel, 27 - joined the celebrations. She cut an elegant figure in a black silk mini dress and a black cardigan and she appeared to be in jovial spirits as she flashed a huge smile. The American model stepped out alongside her son Gabriel's wife Anouk Winzenried, who looked effortlessly chic in a black and white striped button-up dress. Luciana Gimenez - who had an eight-month affair with Mick during his marriage to Jerry in which they welcomed a son Lucas - was also in attendance. She took to social media to share smiling photographs of herself and her son Lucas While the Rolling Stones party continued into the early hours of the morning, the Gallaghers also descended on to the venue for the Oasis afterparty - though Noel and Liam didn't appear to be in attendance. Gene - the son of Liam Gallagher and Nicole Appleton - cut a casual figure in a yellow jumper and blue jeans, which he styled with a pair of dark shades. His brother Lennon - whose mother is Patsy Kensit - looked equally laidback in a denim jacket and washed-out jeans. Oasis took to the stage at Wembley Stadium on Friday night for their first of seven reunion shows at the sold-out venue. It marked the first time that the band have performed at Wembley Stadium since their Dig Out Your Soul tour on July 12, 2009. The Gallagher clan have been flocking out en masse in London to support Oasis' big comeback, with Anais and her mother Meg also both in attendance on Friday night. Noel's ex-wife Meg, 59, has been steadfastly supporting the singer in the lead-up to the reunion, posting throwback snaps of them to Instagram, and she also attended the first night of the tour in Cardiff. She once again stepped out to see Oasis perform as she posed with her daughter Anais and her father Stanley Matthews in photographs shared to social media. In other clips shared to Instagram, Meg filmed herself with a group of pals in the crowd and appeared to be having the time of her life. Ahead of the gig, Meg reminisced about Oasis's previous London gigs and gushed that Anais - who was seven months old when they last performed - is just as proud of her father now. She said: 'Reflecting on 25 years ago when @Oasis rocked the stadium with 70,000 fans, and Franny fru fru, Pippy la la, Rose & Ra Ra, @lexyroche made it right to the front barrier don't know how we did it. 'Now gearing up for tonight's show with 90,000 attendees. Time flies, memories remain. Anaïs only 7 months old then to watching her now so proud of her dad , a full circle that was me just 2 years older than nai nai running around. 'Tonight will be a celebration of family and friends, a moment to cherish. Seated this time, but the excitement remains just as strong. Here's to another 25 years of music and memories.' Oasis' Wembley dates got off to an emotional start as Liam and Noel dedicated their concert to Ozzy Osbourne, who died on Tuesday at the age of 76. His death came just weeks after he took to the stage for his final show with Black Sabbath, with his family confirming the devastating news. The Gallagher brothers respectfully honoured the Prince of Darkness by singing Rock 'N' Roll Star in front of a huge image of Ozzy. In videos shared across social media of the tribute, Liam said: 'Liam said: 'I want to dedicate this next one to Ozzy Osbourne, Rock 'N' Roll Star.' MailOnline revealed that an air ambulance was called to Ozzy's grand country home as paramedics battled to save his life for two hours. Friends told the Mail's Alison Boshoff that his heartbroken wife Sharon may bury Ozzy in the gardens of their 350-acre estate in an intimate family funeral, as she is 'too frail' to go through a larger, public service.
