LVMH sales weaker than expected as luxury sector awaits US trade deal

Time of India26-07-2025
Luxury bellwether
LVMH
reported lower than expected quarterly sales on Thursday, with its core
fashion and leather division
losing further ground as the sector awaits an easing of trade tensions between Europe and the U.S.
France-based LVMH, which owns over 70 brands ranging from handbags, high-end fashion and watches to spirits and hotels, has traditionally drawn on its size and geographical footprint to maximize profits and withstand headwinds.
Yet the group is struggling to shake off
consumer fatigue
and reignite desire for luxury items.
Sales for the second quarter to the end of June were down 4% to 19.5 billion euros ($22.95 billion), falling short of a consensus forecast for a 3% decline compiled by Visible Alpha, cited by UBS. Sales at the group's fashion and leather division, accounting for the bulk of profits, were down 9%, below expectations for a 6% drop.
Chief Financial Officer
Cecile Cabanis
said on a call she was still "rather confident" about the rest of the year as the group expected trade talks between the EU and the Trump administration to deliver good news soon.
Asked how LVMH would view a potential general tariff rate of 15% anticipated for exports to the United States, Cabanis said that would be an "overall good outcome for the general mood of our clients".
With the exception of wines and spirits, some of LVMH's labels still have room to draw on their pricing power to mitigate the tariff impact, she said.
In China, where a real estate crisis has dampened appetite for
luxury goods
, the group saw some improvement, Cabanis said, adding that the success of
Louis Vuitton
's new ship-shaped store in Shanghai demonstrated the brand still had the clout to attract worldwide attention.
Most luxury sector analysts still view the extended downturn that followed a post-pandemic boom as cyclical, induced in part by the prolonged slump in China, bouts of inflation and a yet unresolved trade dispute with the United States.
But after two years of slowing sales following a post-pandemic boom, unease about the health of the industry is growing and high-end labels are scrambling to revitalise their offer.
Consultancy Bain expects sales of luxury goods worldwide to fall between 2% and 5% this year after a 1% drop last year.
LVMH has recently changed designers at Dior, Celine, Givenchy and Loewe, but they will need time to make their mark.

CPI (M) wants Puducherry government to drop move to install prepaid smart meters

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday called for suspending move to introduce prepaid smart meters to bill electricity usage in the Union Territory. Speaking to reporters, CPI (M) secretary S. Ramachandran said the party had already conducted a signature campaign in protest against the Central government's plan for privatising the power sector in the Union Territory. Now, the territorial government has planned to introduce prepaid digital meters for an estimated 4.7 lakh consumers in the region and placed orders with a Mumbai-based company. Mr. Ramachandran said the proposal initiated would also require the consumer to foot about ₹9,000 towards installation cost. This was an unwarranted and unjustifiable burden on consumers, especially as this payment was on top of the security deposit levied at the time of issuing the connection, he said. Besides affecting the common man and farmers, the installation of prepaid meters would pave the way for privatisation of the power sector in the Union Territory, Mr. Ramachandran said. The CPI (M) would launch a major stir if the proposal was not withdrawn, he added.

Sundar Pichai's Google massive loss: Code reveals Alphabet company's secret of..., will it affect...

Sundar Pichai's Google massive loss: Code reveals Alphabet company's secret of…, will it affect … In a major development, tech giant Google on Thursday lost its appeal to overturn a court verdict that ordered changes to its Play Store. The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously rejected the Alphabet company's argument that the earlier trial was unfair and that the trial judge made legal errors in the antitrust case that unfairly benefited 'Fortnite' maker Epic Games. Notably, Epic Games filed a lawsuit against Google in 2020, accusing Google of antitrust violations. Following the court's verdict, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney took to X and wrote, 'Total victory in the Epic vs Google case!' What Was The Case? Epic lodged a case against Tech Giant Google accusing the company of monopolising how users access apps on Android devices and how they make payments for transactions within those apps. The company, in 2023, succeeded in convincing the San Francisco jury that the Alphabet company illegally stifled competition.
