Josh Barrie On the Sauce at Elephant, Hackney: All hail the return of Grolsch on tap
We'd fight over who got what. If the Irish rugby lad was on shift, he'd take Guinness; I'd almost always have Kronenbourg; one of the beautiful actresses would have Carlsberg; but it was mostly a free-for-all other than the Grolsch, generally the preserve of whatever duty manager was in.
After mostly disappearing for the best part of a decade, the Dutch pilsner — with a custom label — is on draught at Elephant, a former Victorian boozer reborn as a parlour for Hackney fashionistas. There are David Shrigley prints beneath one of the most spectacular skylights I've seen, salvaged from an old cinema. By day pools of light filter through it onto people eating Neapolitan pizzas — still as vital in London as the sudden burst of NYC slices — and sipping grand cocktails made with tequila and rum. Come evening, the bar will be abuzz, candles lit and punching warmth through clouded conversation; fish will arrive oily in tins and the wine might be Slovenian.
It is a tremendous iteration of modern drinking and dining, Elephant. But listen, my takeaway above all else is the Grolsch, which is on tap, and which once upon a time I would rarely have on account of it being too haughty a proposition. Now I can have it here, in east London. You see, bartenders never forget.

The Clove Club
Shoreditch Town Hall, EC1, thecloveclub.com
My bar review of Whiskey & Seaweed on these pages in January 2024 invited coverage of high-end snacking in Michelin-starred restaurants. Going to the bar for cocktails and small plates: a way of trying out London's poshest venues without spending more than a ton. The Clove Club has reopened its bar area for the remainder of the summer. Visit for Scottish tacos, fish pakoras and other fine bites alongside cocktails and interesting wines.
Hotel Café Royal
10 Air Street, W1, hotelcaferoyal.com
There's a new cocktail menu at Hotel Café Royal's Green Bar, among the first places in London to do a Hemingway daiquiri as standard. Still probably a wiser option here given their latest list — called Unique Experiences — ranges from £30-£55 per drink. Obviously rare or distinctly upmarket liquors are involved. For example, the mint julep features Fielden Rye; martinis come brimming with Berry Bros & Rudd No 3 gin. Still, I'd wager you'd have more fun with a sub-£20 Hemingway.

We finally have the first photo of Eve Jobs' (Steve Jobs' daughter) wedding dress ...and it was worth the wait
Steve Jobs' daughter, Eve Jobs, wed Olympian Harry Charles in a sleek Givenchy white dress with lace details. She shared first photos on her personal Instagram. Steve Jobs' daughter Eve Jobs posted her first wedding photo on Instagram this past Sunday, August 3, sharing a glimpse into her nuptials with British Olympic equestrian Harry Charles. Eve celebrated her marriage to Charles, marked by an Instagram reveal showing the couple in wedding attire amid scenic surroundings. The post, shared on Sunday, showcased the newlyweds and gave fans a peek into their special day. Charles, who has competed at the Olympic level for Great Britain in show jumping, and Eve reportedly tied the knot in late July in an intimate but lavish ceremony. The celebration is believed to have taken place in the picturesque Cotswolds area, England, where friends and family gathered to honour the couple. Guests included Jessica Springsteen (Bruce Springsteen's daughter) as well as Jennifer Gates (Bill Gates' daughter). Since the wedding announcement, media outlets have reported the event incurred multi‑million‑dollar costs, with estimates around $6.7 million, fueling interest in the extravagant details and guest list. Eve, the youngest daughter of the late Apple co‑founder Steve Jobs and Laurene Powell Jobs, has steadily built her own life away from Silicon Valley's spotlight. She forged a dual path as an equestrian and fashion model. Her modelling debut came in 2020 with a Glossier holiday ad campaign, and in 2022 she signed with renowned agency DNA Model Management. Since then, she's walked runways and appeared at high‑fashion events worldwide. At the same time Eve trained and competed in show jumping from a young age, achieving top‑ranking status among riders under 25 and participating in international competitions. Her relationship with Charles became public during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he won gold in equestrian jumping. Eve shared a heartfelt Instagram post celebrating his victory that drew widespread attention. Solve the daily Crossword

Love Is Blind's Emma Willis reveals secret to marriage is 'sticking through the s***'
Emma Willis and Matt Willis reflect on their 17-year marriage with Yahoo UK Love Is Blind UK hosts Emma and Matt Willis say the secret to their 17-year marriage is "sticking through the s***". Together, they are hosting the second series of Love Is Blind — where contestants hope to fall in love without ever having met their partner face-to-face. As one of the most popular couples in UK showbiz, the married presenters are a good fit for the role of the hosts. Emma and Matt, who tied the knot in 2008, confessed that everyone wants to know: What's the secret to their successful marriage? Initially, the couple were stumped for an answer despite having been married for 17 years and raising their three children together: Isabelle, Ace and Trixie. "Do you know what it is? You feel like you're going, well, we have the answers to love!" Matt told Yahoo UK. Expanding on his answer, the Busted star explained, "The thing is, you balls it up on the way [with love]. It's... are you ready to go through the hard times? To go through it, I think. "Because it's not easy being with someone for many, many years, but at the end of the day, do you love that person? And do you like them? And do you want to be with them forever?" Emma said: "Are you willing to stick through the s***?" Then she added: "And so far, we have." Matt agreed: "Absolutely, absolutely." What isn't a secret is how much fun Emma and Matt are having working on Love Is Blind together. They were already hooked on the franchise after watching the fourth series of the American version of Love Is Blind before landing their jobs on the UK version of the show. "We love it, don't we?" Emma said. Playfully, she added to her husband: "You love it." Cheeky Matt pretended to have to say: "I do love it. I love it very much." But he did agree: "I genuinely do, I genuinely do [love it]." Love Is Blind UK casting There are 28 brave singletons putting their hearts on the line for the second series of Love Is Blind UK. And that comes with an element of risk. At first, Matt is sure a legally binding wedding is the "biggest risk" of taking part in the show. Interestingly, in Channel 4's Married At First Sight UK, the weddings are not legally binding. Netflix's Love Is Blind is offering the singletons the chance to get married for real on TV. Matt said that a wedding is "the ultimate declaration of love". "It's like I choose you forever," he said. "There's nothing really out there that does that... It's a massive thing. It's like I choose you above everyone else forever... That's a pretty big thing." Emma identified heartbreak being a risk for those involved. "Heartbreak is the biggest risk, isn't it?" She said. "Because you're going on there wanting what the show can provide, and that is hopefully to find somebody that you can fall in love with and spend the rest of your life with and get married to. It does work, but obviously not in every single case, so I would imagine heartbreak is the biggest [risk]." Matt agreed with his wife: "Yeah, I think so [heartbreak is the biggest risk], because they do put themselves out there — and you have to." Behind the scenes, the presenters revealed the great lengths Netflix bosses go to ensure that everyone on the show is genuinely looking for love. "Obviously, occasionally someone slips through the gaps [who isn't genuinely looking for love]," Matt said. "And everyone's so surprised because they're so rigorous with casting. We know what we want on this show. We want to find people that want to get married. And they so good casting, aren't they? "They really go to town. They really get everything from them. So they know where they are." Emma agreed: "They really want to find people that genuinely wanna do it because if you don't, it's a waste of time for everybody really, cos that's not the objective of the show. "And as we said, it's a legal wedding at the end of it, so you can't really go, 'Oh yeah, I'm gonna go on that show and I'll pretend to fall in love with someone and pretend to get married to them' cos it's not pretend. It's actually real [where they legally get married]!" Cheeky Matt added: "If you want to go on something and you know, and look good in a swimsuit, there are other shows you can go on that are more suited for you." Love Is Blind UK series 2 is available to stream from 13 August.

Will Wright breaks silence on Liverpool transfer after 'earning opportunity' at Anfield
Will Wright was playing for Liverpool less than a day after his signing was confirmed. In what must have been a surreal 24 hours, he found himself making his Anfield bow after replacing Florian Wirtz, nearly finding the net to cap it all off. Arriving from Salford City, the 17-year-old is expected to mainly work with the U21 setup this season. But he was given a rapid introduction to the size of the institution he has joined. First and foremost, he got an early taste of the Anfield atmosphere, with the crowd in fine voice to welcome the new forward. But on top of that, Wright got a close-up look at the quality of his new teammates, featuring as part of the stronger of the two sides that played Athletic Club — alongside the likes of Mohamed Salah. READ MORE: Man United makes bid for Benjamin Sesko and puts Alexander Isak to Liverpool in doubt READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE: Benjamin Sesko wait, Alexander Isak boost, Marc Guehi battle Admittedly, it wasn't the best first impression of Salah, who skied a penalty shortly after Wright's introduction. When it was awarded, some wondered whether the teenager might even be given the responsibility — but despite the outcome, there is a clearly defined taker at Liverpool, even in friendlies. Even so, it must have been surreal rubbing shoulders with so many elite players, having spent his time up to now with the Salford academy setup. Having never even been on the books at an "elite" club, this was a brand new environment for Wright. Prior to making his whirlwind debut, Wright broke his silence on the move. He marked his transfer with a post on Instagram. "A proud moment for me and my family to announce I've signed for the Premier League champions!", wrote Wright. He shared this alongside a picture of him signing his contract. And after the match, he posted again. There was no caption this time, but three pictures: one of him replacing Wirtz, and two of him in the thick of the action. He may have been a man of few words so far, but those around him have been more eager to talk. And they only have good things to say. "We are absolutely delighted for Will to complete his move to Liverpool after a very successful season as a first year scholar," said Jamie Russell, Salford's head of academy. "He has earned this opportunity and we are excited to see how he continues to develop and progress. "It's brilliant for us as an Academy to see a player move on to a Category 1 club," Russell told Salford's website. "We've only been Category 3 ourselves since 2023, but in that time to see 17 players make men's team debuts and to have interest in a number of players from clubs higher up the leagues is testament to the job that the coaches, the staff, and the recruitment team here are doing." Wright made a senior debut for Salford in January 2025, featuring against Man City in an 8-0 defeat. He was in demand this summer, with Liverpool beating Arsenal to the move. The youngster will now put his faith in the pathway for young talent at Anfield. It won't be easy, with talented strikers like Jayden Danns already striving to make the grade — but Liverpool has clearly seen something that it likes in Wright.
