CPL's Vancouver FC fires head coach, hires Martin Nash
VANCOUVER — Canadian Premier League club Vancouver FC has fired its first-ever head coach, Afshin Ghotbi.

The team announced the move Wednesday, saying Martin Nash will take over as interim head coach and head of Vancouver's academy.

Ghotbi has been the club's head coach since the team's inception back in 2022, and Vancouver went 18-37-20 during his tenure.

The team currently sits in last place in the CPL standings with a 1-9-5 record on the season after getting thumped 4-0 by York United on Saturday.

Vancouver's president and chief executive officer Rob Friend says in a statement that Ghotbi helped build the team from scratch, both on and off the pitch.
Nash joins the team after serving as head coach for York United from 2021 to 2024, and as an assistant for Cavalry FC from 2019 to 2021. He began his playing career with the Vancouver 86ers.

Nash is the brother of NBA legend Steve Nash and brother-in-law of Manny Malhotra, who just won an American Hockey League championship with the Abbotsford Canucks.

Appointing the 49-year-old Canadian international to the role is an opportunity to 'reset, refocus and align our organization from top to bottom as we aim to put in strong performances over the second half of the year,' Friend said in a statement.

That means it's a chance for Summer McIntosh to add her second gold medal after winning the 400 freestyle on the opening day. The 18-year-old Canadian is trying for five individual golds across the eight-day event in Singapore. On Monday she's a strong favorite to get her second gold, this time in the 200-meter individual medley. She set the world record of 2 minutes, 05.70 seconds at the Canadian trials a few months ago. McIntosh is expected to be challenged by American Alex Walsh. Also in the field is 12-year-old Chinese Yu Zidi, whose age and astounding times are the talk of global swimming. The women's 100 butterfly is another eye-catching race. American Gretchen Walsh — Alex's older sister — is the favorite and set the world record of 54.60 earlier this year. Roos Vanotterdijk of Belgium and Australia's Alexandria Perkins will push Walsh. Two more finals are set. Qin Haiyang of China and Nicolo Marinenghi of Italy are the favorites in the 100 breaststroke. The Italian is the Olympian champion from Paris, and Qin won this event two years ago at the worlds in Fukuoka, Japan. The 50 fly final is wide open, but the quickest qualifiers were Maxime Grousset of France and Noe Ponti of Switzerland. Tiger-Cats 37, B.C. Lions 33: Hamilton completes comeback with last-minute touchdown
VANCOUVER — A last-minute touchdown reception from Kiondre Smith lifted the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a 37-33 win over the B.C. Lions on Sunday. Article content Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 389 yards, three touchdowns and an interception as the Ticats (5-2) stretched their win streak to five straight games. Article content Jake Dolegala tallied a rushing major for the Ticats, and Brendan O'Leary-Orange also reeled in a TD pass. Article content Kicker Marc Liegghio made four converts and three field goals, including a 40-yard attempt, as his team overcame a 10-point deficit late in the fourth quarter. Article content Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke threw for 289 yards, connecting on 20 of his 27 attempts, while kicker Sean Whyte made four field goals — including a 45-yard kick — and three converts. Tennis: Vernon's Vasek Pospisil bounced in final NBO appearance, calls it a career
TORONTO — The Toronto Farewell Tour was short-lived. Veteran tennis player Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, who announced last week that the National Bank Open in Toronto would be his final hurrah on the pro circuit, was eliminated Sunday in the first round of men's singles by qualifier Facundo Bagnis of Argentina at Sobeys Stadium. Bagnis won the best-of-three match on centre court 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in one hour, 57 minutes. Pospisil wrote on X before his match: 'Eighteen years of professional tennis.
