Union Minister and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) President JP Nadda on Thursday highlighted India's "unprecedented" digital revolution in the last 11 years, adding that the transformation has bridged the digital divide and ensured that technology reaches every citizen.In a post on X, Nadda said that governance is more transparent and efficient under Prime Minister Narendra Modi."Over the past 11 years, India has witnessed an unprecedented digital revolution under the visionary leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji. This transformation has not only connected millions but also bridged the digital divide, ensuring that technology reaches every citizen," Nadda said."Today, governance is more transparent and efficient than ever before. Major government schemes are integrated with real-time digital dashboards, promoting transparency and delivering direct benefits to citizens," he added.He mentioned that central schemes such as UPI, DigiLocker, Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, U-WIN, CoWIN and e-Sanjeevhave empowered millions."Innovations like UPI, DigiLocker, Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, U-WIN, CoWIN and e-Sanjeevani are not just digital platforms; they have empowered millions. "Let's celebrate this Digital India journey as it paves the way towards a Viksit Bharat @2047," he said on X.Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed India's digital and technological progress, stating that the country is making remarkable progress in the innovation and application of technology.The Prime Minister highlighted that the digital progress is also strengthening the country's efforts towards becoming self-reliant in the technology sector.Taking to his X social media platform, PM Modi shared a post by MyGovIndia, which talks about how India could become the next technology powerhouse of the world and the steps taken by the Union Government in the past 11 years in the sector."Powered by the youth of India, we are making remarkable progress in the innovation and application of technology. "It is also strengthening our efforts to become self-reliant and a global tech powerhouse," PM Modi said.India has recorded a surge of 2500 times in the volume of UPI transactions, with data showing that UPI transactions, which were at 0.93 crore in April 2017 increased to 1867.70 crore by April 2025.India is also leading the digital payment revolution , wherein more than Rs 260 lakh crore transactions have been processed with Rs 18,600 crore transactions annually.UPI's acceptance in the world has also increased and it is live in seven countries, including the UAE, Singapore, Nepal, France, Mauritius, Bhutan and Sri Lanka.India also stands as the world's cheapest mobile data provider, with more than 94 crore broadband connections and more than 120 crore telephone subscribers.A total of 2.18 lakh gram panchayats have been connected through optical fibre networks under the Bharat Net scheme and 6.92 lakh km of fibre cable has been laid.The Union Government has also showcased interest in Artificial Intelligence with three AI Centres of Excellence to be set up in top educational institutions. India is also working on the development of AI models such as BharatGen, Sarvam-1, Chitralekha and Hanooman's Everest 1.0.On June 10, Prime Minister Modi shared an article on the government's commitment to advancing India's digital connectivity over the past 11 years.

Fewer use cases take toll on Fastag growth
ETtech Fastag, the modern electronic payment system for vehicle owners and the entire travel ecosystem, is stagnating, with almost negligible growth in the last financial year. Even the number of transactions and banks going live on the payment method remained sluggish during the of evolution of new use cases for Fastag, beyond toll payments, is one of the key factors hindering its growth, said people in the know.'Toll payments are undertaken by consumers only that many times in a month or a year, and even for commercial vehicles, almost the entire base has been already covered, and the sector is also not growing exponentially,' said a top executive at a digital payments firm which processes Fastag payments. 'Overall, the payment method has stagnated at a certain level.'Data shared by the National Payments Corporation of India , which powers settlements on Fastag, showed 350-380 million transactions are processed on Fastag every month, which has stayed constant since January 2024. In terms of fund settlement, it has hovered between Rs 6,000 and Rs 6,500 crore in the same period. Around 38 banks are currently active on Fastag, unchanged since May payment methods are not directly comparable, for context, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), the most popular digital payment method, currently has 675 banks live on the platform. In May 2023, there were 445 Fastag was initiated with the aim of digitising highway tolls, its use cases were conceived to be eventually expanded to everything concerning a vehicle such as fuel purchases, and parking payments, among others.'While a limited number of large commercial properties like shopping malls have started using Fastag as a payment method for their parking fees, fuel has shown almost no adoption,' said the founder of a fintech startup offering this high cost of installing Fastag-capable gates and tag readers has discouraged smaller commercial estates from adopting them.'A large mall might be processing around Rs 30 to 40 lakh in parking payments per month, for that, the installation and maintenance might be a bit cumbersome,' the founder said the average cost of installing a single gate could be around Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh, in addition to maintenance cost.'There is no margin to be made on fuel payments, hence that use case is also not picking up,' said the executive of a digital payments firm cited parking, one of India's most popular ways of parking vehicles, has also shown no signs of adopting Fastag as a payment method, with transactions mostly through QR codes or insiders also pointed out that the overall disillusionment among fintech startups on generating revenue from digital payments is one of the major reasons behind private firms not taking any fresh initiative on payments. They added that UPI grew in popularity due to large marketing spends into the ecosystem which incentivised customers towards adoption.'No new-age fintech is pumping funds into digital payments right now. Fastag and such payment methods needed incentives to get more customers to use them readily, in the absence of incentives new use-cases are not building up,' said the founder of a digital payments is also plagued by inefficient bank-led customer service, especially during instances of blacklisted tags or recharge issues. While PhonePe, and Amazon Pay are among Fastag distributors, they rely on banks for customer service, where the experience is often subpar.'Banks make money on the float they get through these payments, otherwise there is hardly any incentive for others to offer superior customer experience,' said the founder cited above.

Centre ask states to ensure occupancy of completed houses under affordable housing scheme
New Delhi: Vacant affordable homes built under a flagship government scheme has prompted the Centre to propose a temporary halt on new projects in some cities. Inadequate infrastructure including water, sanitation, sewerage, electricity and roads is seen as the key reason for people staying away from homes built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana's (PMAY) Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) vertical. Also read | Affordable housing financiers become market darlings after RBI rate cut The housing and urban affairs ministry (MoHUA) in a recent meeting with several states including Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh discussed the issue that is affecting the government scheme to provide all-weather pucca houses to all eligible beneficiaries. Low occupancy According to data provided by the ministry to Parliament in March, out of the 118 million houses sanctioned under PMAY, about 90 million have been completed and 87.5 million occupied. "The occupancy of completed AHP houses under PMAY-U is very low particularly in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. States and union territories need to expedite the completion of houses, infrastructure work and allotment of completed AHP houses to the beneficiaries. MoHUA has raised concerns with states and noted that unoccupancy continues due to inadequate infrastructure in several states," said a person in the know of the developments. Also read | How affordable housing in India has become unaffordable Another person said that states have also been directed to ensure occupancy of completed houses under the Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) vertical in a city before starting work on new projects under PMAY-2 in the same city. The Centre has been advising states to "identify and attach" beneficiaries under the AHP vertical in the initial phase of approval to avoid unoccupancy later stage. In order to ensure better occupancy under the PMAY (Urban)-2, the government has asked states to ensure that projects under the scheme should come with basic civic amenities like water, sanitation, roads and electricity, said the first person mentioned above. The Union cabinet in August last year approved PMAY-U 2.0, under which financial assistance is committed for 10 million urban poor and middle-class families through state government and union territories to build, buy or rent a house at an affordable cost in urban areas in five years. Four verticals The central government will provide assistance of up to ₹2.50 lakh per house under the scheme. PMAY-U, launched in June 2015, was revamped and launched as PMAY-U 2.0. The scheme has four verticals through which beneficiaries are supported -- 'Affordable Housing in Partnership' (AHP), Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Rental Housing (ARH) and Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS). Under AHP, financial assistance is provided to beneficiaries from the economically weaker section for owning houses being built with different partnerships by states, union territories, public or private agencies, while under BLC, financial assistance is provided to individual eligible families to construct new houses on their own vacant land, or land provided by the government. "Centre has stressed the need for a case-by-case approach for addressing the occupancy challenges and reasons may differ for different projects and cities. States have also been told to ensure sufficient budgetary allocations to expedite completion of non-started houses under PMAY-U," said the first person mentioned above. The ministry has suggested geo-tagging all sanctioned houses in a time-bound manner to monitor progress. The Centre has also suggested that old central or state government-funded houses that are unoccupied are allotted to eligible PMAY-U 2.0 beneficiaries.

Chandigarh Congress criticises UT administration for demolition of Furniture Market
1 2 Chandigarh: Chandigarh Congress on Sunday criticised the UT administration for bulldozing and demolishing the decades-old Furniture Market, leaving hundreds of shopkeepers devastated and rendering scores of workers jobless. Congress stated that the action was undertaken in disregard of the Honourable High Court's observation that a sympathetic view be taken and that efforts be made by the administration to see if alternate sites could be allotted to the affected parties to continue their livelihood. "Rather than pursuing a humane and consultative process, the administration opted for an abrupt and arbitrary demolition without reasonable time for evacuation and without any arrangement for the protection or relocation of inventory and assets. As a result, numerous shopkeepers suffered irreparable financial losses, losing not only their goods and furniture but also the very foundations of their businesses," Congress said. Chandigarh Congress president HS Lucky strongly condemned the administration's insensitivity, saying, "What we are witnessing is not governance, but a systematic dismantling of the social fabric that binds our city. The administration has shown no regard for human suffering and no commitment to the principles of a welfare state. We demand that an immediate and comprehensive rehabilitation scheme be introduced and that alternate sites be allotted to the affected shopkeepers to enable them to rebuild their lives and livelihoods. Anything less would be a betrayal of the very ethos of governance in a democratic and socialist republic." The Congress stated that it stands firmly with the affected families and pledges to raise this matter at every appropriate forum until justice is served. It is imperative that the administration is held accountable for this gross overreach and made to answer for its repeated failure to act with fairness, compassion, and responsibility. Lucky also criticised the Modi-led central govt, under whom the Chandigarh administration works directly, for failing to provide relief to these decades-old establishments. (Photos Pritam Thakur)
