Indian Express9 hours ago

Squid Game Season 3 wrapped its final run with six episodes dropping on June 27. With that, the Hwang Dong Hyuk directorial—Netflix's most-watched series to date- comes to an end, with no plans for another season. Season 3 picks up right where Season 2 left off, with Gi Hun stepping back into the game. Not for the money, not for guilt, this time, he's here to shut it down once and for all. He had previously led a rebellion against the system, but it failed miserably. His heroic act ended up costing 37 lives, leaving him shattered. He was sent out in a coffin. Now, with nothing left to lose, he's back in the arena with one mission. But the birth of a new baby gives him a glimmer of hope. So here we are, breaking down everything that went down in the finale of Squid Game Season 3.

Players are divided into two types:
Knives: Must kill a Key to survive.
Keys: Just need to stay alive
Myung Gi tells Jun Hee he will protect her and the baby, but ends up killing Hyun Ju, who had just helped Jun Hee deliver her baby. Jun Hee's trust is completely shattered. Geum Ja begs her son not to kill Jun Hee and instead kill her, but he leaps towards the newborn and his mother with a knife. Geum Ja stabs him from the back, yes, she ends up killing her own son. Later, she speaks to Gi Hun, telling him to save others and not to lose hope. That same night, she hanged herself to death. Gi Hun loses his mind. He blames Dae Ho for the failed rebellion. Dae Ho had claimed he'd bring back weapons, but he chickened out. So Gi Hun hunts him down and kills him with his bare hands.
Players this time have to cross a narrow bridge or fall to their deaths. Jun Hee is badly injured in the leg, so she hands her baby to Gi Hun and trusts him with crossing the bridge with the baby. He promises Jun Hee that he will come back and take her along, but she asks him not to come. She jumps to her death. That way, Gi Hun can live and raise the child. Her baby becomes Player 222, an actual contestant.

Gi Hun is taken to a private meeting with the Front Man (In Ho). He hands Gi Hun a knife and suggests: 'Kill the rest while they're sleeping, and vote to end the Game with the baby.' Gi Hun asks why he's doing this, and then In Ho removes his mask, he's Player 001. He taunts player 426, saying no matter what he does, someone else will always run the Game. But Gi Hun refuses to follow his path and chooses to play the game, leaving everything on faith.
Players must cross three towers. To move ahead, one person must die at each level, being pushed down to death. At this point, the only ones left are:
Min Su gets voted off first. Player 100 is killed by Myung Gi too. Gi Hun tells the rest, who are planning to push him and the baby, that he won't give up on the baby and will die with him if targeted. So someone from them will have to die in the next level. This causes a rift in the group, who play a game of rock, paper, scissors, slowly, everyone dies. Now, final showdown: Gi Hun vs. Myung Gi. They fight. Myung Gi falls and dies. But no one had pressed the button, so the Game still needs a death. Gi Hun has two choices: either kill himself or the baby. He lays the baby down and chooses to jump. Looks up, knowing the VIPs are watching from their secret room. Then says, 'We are not horses. We are humans. Humans are…'. The Game ends. The baby wins.
Jun Ho (the cop from Season 1 and the half-sibling of In Ho, the frontman) tracks down the island again. His brother, In Ho, orders the entire place to self-destruct and escapes with the baby. Six months later, Jun Ho finds the child and Gi Hun's prize money in his apartment. It's clear, the frontman left the baby for his brother to raise, along with the winnings.
No Eul, the soldier who saved a contestant, finds out her daughter might still be alive.
Gyeong Seok, the father who joined the Game to help his sick daughter, reunites with her.
Woo Seok, out of prison, looks to reopen Gi Hun's hotel.
Sae Byeok's little brother is finally reunited with their mother.
In Ho meets Gi Hun's daughter and hands her his belongings with the winnings.
Who is the mystery woman?
The most searched question of Squid Game 3 is the cameo of Cate Blanchett. In the final scene, In Ho is in LA, where he sees a woman in a suit slapping down a Ddakji card. Her identity is revealed, she's a recruiter. This sets up a possible spin-off of Squid Game in America. The Games are still going on. Somewhere else. Squid Game Season 3 isn't a happy ending. Gi Hun dies, and the system doesn't exactly collapse. But it triggers changes. We think so.

Squid Game director reveals real-world figures who inspired VIPs: ‘They no longer hide behind a curtain'

The Squid Game series was inspired by some real-life experiences of director Hwang Dong Hyuk. In the show, we mostly follow the players, poor and desperate, ready to kill each other for money. And while we kept slamming some players for behaving selfishly, the show makes it clear that the real villains are not the players, but the ultra-rich watching from the top. These are the VIPs, treating the lives of people they consider beneath them as nothing more than a circus for their amusement. In a recent interview with Time magazine, director Hwang opened up about how some of the biggest tech billionaires and those in power inspired the role, and whether some of the characters have real-life resemblance. The VIP's first appeared in season 1, episode 7 and were shown as filthy rich people gulping alcohol, speaking English, wearing gold animal masks, and betting on the players' lives. They treat it like gambling on horses. In Season 1, they stayed in their luxury rooms and watched everything from behind the scenes, pampered and protected by the Front Man, played by Lee Byung Hun. Later, it was revealed that Oh Il Nam was the head of VIP's who played as player 001. He was dying, so he created the game for fun, a jab at how the rich are disconnected from human life and suffering. In season 3, however, these VIP's get down into the game themselves, take off their masks and kill people with their bare hands. Also read: Squid Game Season 3 ending explained: The truth about Gi Hun's fate, the mystery woman, and all survivors Director Hwang Dong Hyuk said this was intentional. He wanted to show how the rich no longer even bother to hide their power. 'In the past, those that really controlled the system and maintained power were hidden behind the curtain, almost like this big unseen conspiracy. However, it's no longer the case, especially in America,' Hwang told Time. 'We talk a lot about oligarchy these days, but these so-called big tech owners, they step up, telling everyone who they're backing with their money. They willingly take their masks off, almost as if to declare, 'We're the ones running everything. We're the ones in control,' he added. Director Hwang said that while the concept of the VIPs is not based on one person, while writing the final script, he started seeing some familiarity with the current scenario in the world. Like Elon Musk, for example. 'Elon Musk is everywhere these days, right?' Hwang said, adding, 'Everybody talks about him. Not only is he the head of a huge tech company that controls the world almost, but he's also a showman. After writing [Season 3], of course I thought, 'Oh, some of the VIPs do kind of resemble Elon Musk.'' The director even revealed that, although it was very unintentional and he didn't plan it that way, one of the VIPs also resembles US President Donald Trump. Also read: Squid Game 3 ending: 7 burning questions answered in Netflix thriller finale; future possibilities explored Hwang, during the interview, also revealed how his own struggle with money and the 2008 financial crisis shaped this story. He spoke about the recent political fights in South Korea, referring to the president's impeachment, and even the US Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, when some Trump supporters stormed into the building. All these events made him realise the extent people go when driven by hate and greed. He feels that people have forgotten how to disagree and now outright disregard others as evil. And with the rise of AI, algorithms, and fake news, Hwang began to ask: 'Are elections even working anymore?' In the second-last episode, players are even told to vote on who to kill next, and one option is to eliminate the baby in Gi Hun's hands. That's when one Player says, 'Let's vote on who should get eliminated, and keep it democratic, like they're not talking about murder.'

Is Squid Game USA Next? Here's what the season three finale's secret might mean for fans

Netflix 's Squid Game Season 3 landed this week, ending the saga of Seong Gi-hun ( Lee Jung-jae ), Player 456, who first captured global attention in Season 1. Viewers watched Gi-hun enter the Games to clear debts but saw him become a rebel inside the blood-soaked competition. This time, the final episode sees Gi-hun trapped in a last stand. He faces Myung-gi (Yim Si-wan) and Jun-hee's newborn baby, now Player 222. Both men kill the other contestants too soon. The cruel twist? At least one must die each round. Myung-gi's desperation ends in a fall off the platform, leaving Gi-hun with a choice — kill the baby or face the guards' guns. Gi-hun defies the Games' cruelty. He ends his own life instead, shouting he is 'not a horse to be bet on but a human with a life.' He spares the child but seals his own fate. Hundreds of bodies remain inside the flaming arena. Yet In-ho takes the baby and the winnings — 45.6 billion won (roughly £26 million) — and disappears before the police arrive. The South Korean arena is finished. But the system that fed it? That flame flickers still. Live Events Jun-ho and No-eul walk away or try to While Gi-hun's life ends, other faces from the Squid Game Season 2 cast — Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun) and No-eul (Park Gyu-young) — wrestle with their own escapes. Jun-ho, brother to the Front Man, reaches the island at the last moment. No-eul, torn by guilt over abandoning her own child in North Korea, helps another father flee and then tries to torch the Games' secrets. In the chaos, the wealthy VIPs leave untouched. No punishment. No change. Six months later: Money moves on Half a year passes. Jun-ho's ally Mr Choi (Jeon Seok-ho) is out of prison. Jun-ho drops his fight. But the Front Man appears again — and hands him Jun-hee's baby and that mountain of won Gi-hun first won. The prize lives on. So does the question: at what cost? Cate Blanchett and 'Squid Game USA' And just when the story appears shut — one silent scene swings the door wide open. In the final minutes, In-ho rides through downtown Los Angeles. He spots a figure in a suit. Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett. She's playing Ddakji with a homeless man, echoing Gong Yoo's 'Salesman' from Squid Game Season 1. Their eyes lock. No words. Just a nod. The Front Man closes the window. The camera fades. Hwang Dong-hyuk , the series creator, told Netflix's Tudum: 'We thought having a woman as a recruiter would be more dramatic and intriguing. And as for why Cate Blanchett, she's just the best, with unmatched charisma. Who doesn't love her? So we were very happy to have her appear.' He added, 'If Gong Yoo is the Korean Recruiter, I thought she would be the perfect fit as the American Recruiter, bringing a short but gripping and impactful ending to the story.' Lee Byung-hun confirmed he never met Blanchett on set: 'We shot our parts separately with just a camera going back and forth.' Is the American Squid Game next? Blanchett's cameo fuels old rumours. For years, whispers have said Netflix might back a Squid Game USA. Deadline reported David Fincher might develop it. Dennis Kelly, of Utopia, is linked as writer. Sources suggest 'Squid Game: America' could start production in Los Angeles in December 2025. Netflix? Quiet for now. Hwang Dong-hyuk told Entertainment Weekly: 'I'm not trying to say that I'm going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never.' Until then, the Squid Game cast stands frozen between an ending and a question mark. For Netflix, Squid Game lives beyond Gi-hun's sacrifice. There's a mobile game. The reality spin-off Squid Game: The Challenge won a BAFTA. Philadelphia and Dallas will soon house permanent Squid Game venues. So the slap of Ddakji may ring next in American streets. Squid Game Season 1 shocked the world. Seasons 2 and 3 — messy as they were — kept the fight alive. If there's more, it begins with Blanchett's nod on that Los Angeles pavement. One last question for fans: ready for the next slap?
