Romanian deputy PM resigns after bribery case resurfaces
BUCHAREST - Romanian deputy prime minister Dragos Anastasiu resigned on Sunday after an old corruption scandal in which he was involved as a witness resurfaced at a time when the one-month-old coalition government is trying to enforce cost-cutting reforms. Anastasiu had been tasked by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan with overseeing the reform of state-owned companies, part of broader efforts to reduce the largest budget deficit in the European Union and root out waste and inefficiency. Last week, an old corruption case revealed that one of Anastasiu's firms had been blackmailed by a tax authority inspector into paying bribes disguised as consultancy fees for eight years from 2009 or risk lengthy inspections. The company later denounced the inspector, who was convicted in 2023. Anastasiu and his business partner were never charged with a crime. Anastasiu said his company had paid all its taxes and the bribes were "for survival, not profit". "I encourage every entrepreneur to speak out and say under what conditions business has been done in Romania and no longer accept what we did while making mistakes," he told reporters on Sunday. The government, which will hike several taxes from August and is laying off staff and cutting bonuses, has already faced several street protests but has narrowly avoided a ratings downgrade from the lowest rung of investment grade. The assault in Komanda, a city in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, is believed to have been carried out by ADF rebels, wielding guns and machetes, officials told Reuters. Jean Kato, an official in the city administration, said worshippers were taking part in a night mass when the rebels stormed the church in the early hours of Sunday morning. Thirty-eight people were dead, 15 injured and several others were still missing, officials said. Christophe Munyanderu, a human rights activist present at the scene in Komanda, said shots were heard overnight but people at first thought it was thieves. Father dies after saving three children from drowning in S. Korea
The man's two children were playing in the water with their friend and got caught in the rising tides. A man in his 40s jumped into the sea to save three children including his own, but ended up drowning, in a tragic ending to a family trip to Jeju Island. According to the rescue officials and the Jeju Coast Guard, the incident occurred at around 2.26pm (1.26pm Singapore time) on July 25 off the coast of Jeju City, in the northern part of the island. The man's two children were playing in the water with their friend and got caught in the rising tides. The man jumped into the water and helped the three children climb onto a nearby breakwater, but did not manage to escape himself. He was pulled from the water by his acquaintance shortly before the rescue officials arrived, but his heart had stopped by then. He was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation before being taken by helicopter to Cheju Halla General Hospital, but was pronounced dead at around 4.28pm. This was the second water-related death in the area that day. A tourist in his 30s went missing at the city's Gwakji Beach at around 2.40pm the same day, and was found dead 70 minutes later.
