20 editor-favorite sunscreens that actually make us want to put on SPF

CNN28-04-2025
You might only think about wearing sunscreen once the spring and summer sunshine starts to roll in, but a daily sunscreen should be a part of your morning routine in every season. CNN Underscored editors test hundred of beauty products every year and consult dermatologists for expert insight, so we know exactly what we're looking for when it comes to finding a sunscreen that keeps us protected and satisfies our skin care needs. We won't judge if you don't have a sunscreen in your routine yet, but we asked our editors to share the sunscreens that they wear (and rewear) to help you find the one worthy of a spot in your regimen.
Lightsaver Tinted Activated Mineral Sunscreen SPF 33
Finding a mineral sunscreen that doesn't leave your face oily or greasy looking is hard, but the Lightsaver Tinted Mineral Sunscreen put that search to rest. It has a creamy, whipped texture that blends into the skin and leaves a natural finish. It comes in an untinted and tinted version, but I prefer the latter for avoiding any white cast, although it doesn't provide much coverage. Lightsaver is made by a dermatologist and also has the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance, so I feel confident in recommending it for sensitive, reactive skin types too. — Sophie Shaw, beauty and fashion editor
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50
This is my go-to sunscreen to protect my face, especially during the summer months. It's a little expensive but I love that it has a matte finish and is lightweight, which makes it perfect for ensuring that my face isn't shiny or my makeup isn't melting. It feels very cool on my skin too. — Michelle Rae Uy, writer, testing and updates
La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Hydra Sunscreen SPF 50
Last spring, I picked up this sunscreen from my local drugstore. I wanted something that I could layer under makeup or wear alone that had a nongreasy finish. This formula from La Roche-Posay is exactly that. It feels silky smooth on and gives my skin a bit of an added glow, which works for me since I love a dewy finish. It's a bit expensive for face sunscreen but it's on par with other fan favorites from Supergoop!, EltaMD and First Aid Beauty. — Elena Matarazzo, associate deals editor
Ultra Violette Supreme Screen SPF 50
It makes sense that sunny Australia would be home to some outstanding sunscreen brands. Ultra Violette recently brought its stellar SPFs stateside and it managed to translate all of the amazing qualities of its original formulas to the US versions with FDA-cleared UVA/UVB filters. Supreme Screen is its most popular product and it has quickly become one of my personal favorites. The SPF feels more like a moisturizer than a thick, greasy sunscreen and it has a satin finish that layers well under makeup. I'm also a fan of the Future Screen mineral SPF fluid that has a slight tint to cancel out any zinc white cast. — Sophie Shaw, beauty and fashion editor
Everyday Humans Resting Beach Face SPF 30 Sunscreen Serum
I won't name names, but some popular sunscreen brands make my eyes tear up profusely. I first tried this serum-like SPF from Everyday Humans a few years ago and haven't looked back since. It blends in easily and has the bonus of hyaluronic acid, which makes my summer skin care routine even faster and easier. — Tamara Kraus, senior lifestyle editor
Hawaiian Tropic Weightless Hydration Face Sunscreen
This has been my go-to face sunscreen for the past two years. It's hydrating yet lightweight, so it doesn't leave my face greasy. I love how it blends easily and has never left a white cast on my skin — instead, it leaves my face looking glowy and plump. Plus, it has a wonderful summery scent. — Stephanie Luna, editorial coordinator
Tonymoly Green Tea Superlight Daily Defense Sunscreen SPF 50
I love Korean sunscreens and have tried all of the viral hits from Beauty of Joseon, Round Lab, Skin 1004, Innisfree and more (which, for the record, are still in my top 10 favorites!), but since it's getting harder to find original Korean formulas in the US (Korean sunscreen filters are not yet approved by the FDA), I've been searching for affordable alternatives that still deliver smooth, sheer protection and weightless wear. Thankfully, Tonymoly came out with this light and creamy green tea-infused SPF that ticks all the boxes. It leaves my skin feeling plump and hydrated, almost like a face primer. — Sophie Shaw, beauty and fashion editor
Kopari Face Shield
I just recently tried the Kopari Face Shield that's just as lightweight and silky on the skin as my favorite Supergoop! Unseen sunscreen. Instead of a highly matte finish though, it adds some dewiness to my face — without making my face feel oily and icky. — Michelle Rae Uy, writer, testing and updates
Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen
I take sunscreen very seriously, and as someone with dry skin, I need something that moisturizes without looking greasy or breaking me out. While I love some of the options from Paula's Choice and Supergoop! (which are also called out on this list), sometimes I don't want to spend $30 to $40 on one small tube of sunscreen. This Round Lab sunscreen is the perfect middle ground for me; it hydrates like a high-end sunscreen and doesn't peel under makeup, leave a white cast or have a heavy scent like some cheaper drugstore options I've tried. Plus, I can normally snag it for $20 to $25 when it goes on sale. One tube of this will last me a few months with daily use, and now that Round Lab's products are available at Target, it also makes restocking much easier. — Jillian Tracy, associate editor
Paula's Choice Resist Youth-Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50
This sunscreen is such a go-to for me. It's super lightweight, doesn't leave a white cast and works so well with my acne-prone, oily skin. It also makes my skin look glowy and not oily in the slightest. — Gabriella Triolo, social coordinator
Coola Organic Sunscreen SPF 70 Spray
While I never fail to apply sunscreen to my face on the daily, I'm far less consistent when it comes to protecting the rest of my body. Coola's sunscreen spray makes it easier to build a healthy habit and spritz on SPF on my way out the door during the summertime. I love that it comes in different SPF levels and fun fruity scents (my favorite is the Peach Blossom). It even contains organic ingredients, without a premium price tag. — Sophie Shaw, beauty and fashion editor
Byoma Ultra-Lightweight Face Fluid SPF 50
My fair skin is thanking Byoma over and over again for an SPF 50 option of this Face Fluid sunscreen. It goes on so light, feels hydrating and sits so well under makeup. It gives my skin just the right amount of glow and the tip applicator keeps things mess-free and easy. It's packed with skin care ingredients that make it a seamless part of my morning routine. There's an SPF 30 version too if you prefer, but I'm all about the higher SPF. — Ellen McAlpine, writer, updates
Kopari Sun Shield Body Glow
I've been loving this newly released SPF 50 sunscreen from Kopari that has gold pearlescent minerals that make my skin glow and shimmer, especially in the sun. It's also very lightweight and doesn't feel icky on the skin, reducing the stickiness you feel during oppressive summer days. — Michelle Rae Uy, writer, testing and updates
Sun Bum Daily Glow SPF 30 Sunscreen Face Lotion
I have been using this a lot lately and really like how it looks on my skin. You get a little glow, some sun protection and it doesn't feel heavy at all. It's perfect if you're going for a minimalist or no-makeup kind of look. — Gabriella Triolo, social coordinator
Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics
Even as I've gained more knowledge about higher-end skin care products, Beauty of Joseon's facial sunscreen still remains a favorite of mine. As the second coat of paint I put on my face each morning, I appreciate how lightweight it is and how easily it dabs into my skin and disappears — this is what separates it from most facial sunscreen I've encountered, and is why I don't mind walking a little further to find the nearest store that stocks it or waiting a little longer for a delivery. — Henry T. Casey, electronics writer
Hero Cosmetics Force Shield
I pick up a mini bottle of this Hero Cosmetics Sunscreen whenever I get a chance. It comes out of the bottle green, but don't worry — it blends into the skin for an almost matte finish. I love that it's not oily and made for sensitive skin. — Gareen Puglia, associate testing writer
Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50
A few of our editors tested out this color-changing tinted sunscreen last year, and even though I took a bottle home right away, I honestly forgot about it up until a few months ago. Lately, I've been wearing this sunscreen on days I'm working from home and don't want to wear too many layers on my face. I appreciate that it evens out my skin tone just enough so I look put together on Zoom calls, while still providing adequate SPF and not feeling too heavy. I'm almost out of this bottle but I'll definitely be restocking. — Amina Lake Patel, home and gifts editor
IT Cosmetics Hello Sunshine Invisible Sunscreen For Face SPF 50
I'm obsessed with this sunscreen recently. It's super lightweight, doesn't feel greasy at all, and makes my skin look really smooth. As a plus, it doesn't leave a white cast and works well with my acne-prone skin — Gabriella Triolo, social coordinator
Innisfree Daily UV Defense Sunscreen
This SPF feels like a second moisturizer and goes on so easily. I anticipated it to feel thicker than it does, but the lightweight formula wears well all day, and at just $18 a bottle I can't help but be a fan. I can layer it with makeup, though I've been mixing this sunscreen with a bit of my concealer for no-makeup makeup days for light coverage and sun protection. — Ellen McAlpine, writer, updates
Kosas DreamBeam Comfy Smooth Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40
The Kosas DreamBeam in Radiant Finish gives my skin a dewy glow and makes putting on sunscreen feel glamorous. The formula feels more like a primer than an actual sunscreen, but you're getting that SPF 40 protection. It's been my go-to for almost a year now — I wear it as a base for my makeup or pair it with concealer and head out the door. — Gareen Puglia, associate testing writerHow do CNN Underscored editors choose their favorite sunscreens?
How do CNN Underscored editors choose their favorite sunscreens?

36 Products That Stand On Business

Hawaiian Tropic After Sun Body Butter that'll stand its ground against the dry, flaky skin that comes with a sunburn. It's made with shea butter, coconut oil, and avocado oil to add some hydration to scorched skin, and it smells like the undisputed greatest summer scent of all time — coconut 🥥! Hawaiian Tropic's SPF 30 Mineral Powder Sunscreen Brush — it looks at competitors like the $35 Supergoop and $69 Colorscience and shouts, "WHY ARE YOU SO EXPENSIVE?!" The powder formula makes it super easy to touch up your sun protection throughout the day. However, the real jaw-dropping feature is that it applies perfectly to your scalp — yes, your scalp needs SPF, too! A fast-acting plug-in fly trap that looks like a simple night-light to the unsuspecting eye but actually uses UV LED light to attract the flies, fruit flies, moths, and gnats that are using your home as their Airbnb for summer vacay. The refillable glue trap is placed on the back, so you won't even have to see the flies until it's time to replace it. Dr. Melaxin "Peel Shot," a K-beauty staple so effective, your dead skin won't stand a chance. No really, it'll just roll right off as you rub it in. All that exfoliation will tell blackheads and excess oil to take a hike, while the rice bran water restores hydration. A slim and super discreet travel bottle of Poo-Pourri because rumor has it you're going to end up banned from Chili's if you stink up the bathroom one more time. Sorry, I know how much you love a Triple Dipper 😔. Luckily, this exists and is super easy to carry around — just give the water three to five spritzes before you go! A "spray and go" enzyme-based laundry stain remover so you won't have to panic the next time you accidentally get some pizza sauce on your favorite white top. It's a plant-powered formula (so no chemicals like ammonia or bleach that might harm some fabrics) and is super simple to use: just spray the stain, let it sit for a few minutes, then wash as usual! A genius 2-in-1 knife and cutting board that will have you winning the war against excess dirty dishes. This scissor-like contraption has a knife on one side and a tiny, flat board on the other that's just big enough to quickly slice fruits and veggies. Imagine slicing freshly chopped cucumber directly into your salad instead of dirtying up a full-size cutting board! And Ninja's *portable* Crispi Air Fryer system — because the notion that work lunch can't be exciting is propaganda you're not falling for!! This literally air fries your food in the same container you eat it in, meaning fewer dirty dishes are accumulated, which is the number 1 most annoying thing about taking lunch to work. A Bounce wrinkle release spray in a convenient travel size so you can take it with you on your next vacay. Seriously, who has time to iron while traveling?! There's also no telling if that dusty hotel iron is actually going to work. All you have to do is spray, tug the fabric a few times, then smooth the wrinkles away with your hand like some sort of magic wrinkle-fighting wizard. It's also perfect for refreshing any clothes you plan to wear a few times during your trip, thanks to the fresh scent. A holy grail 5-in-1 Edgelift Curl Brush that reviewers of all curl and wave types have left rave reviews for. The unique bristles are meant to help prevent frizz while defining curls, waves, and coils with minimal tugging. That's right, a future where you no longer dread brushing your hair has arrived. Maybe 2025 isn't a complete dumpster fire after all. The Pink Stuff, a tub of cleaning paste that against all odds has become one of the biggest celebs on TikTok (no really, it's racked up 156,000 positive ratings). It'll completely revitalize your sink, bathtub, and neglected oven with the help of a little elbow grease. You'll stare in awe as you realize that crayon stain on your staincase wasn't as permanent as you thought. A rechargeable heated ice cream scoop because heating a regular spoon under warm water simply doesn't work that well and you know it. This ingenious invention can heat up to 158 degrees, which is warm enough to break through even the toughest tub of Blue Bunny. Monday Haircare Dry Shampoo — close your eyes and imagine a dry shampoo that absorbs oil, coats your hair in keratin to help protect it from damage, and costs less than $7? Open 'em — THIS is it! Oh, and it even has a lovely gardenia scent to freshen up your locks on sweaty summer days. A four-piece airtight food saver set that is sick and tired of food waste!! It's meant to perfectly form to the shape of halved fruits, meaning the avocado you just sliced won't go bad in approximately 2.5 seconds anymore. Reusable Gripstic bag sealers, which are on a mission to reinvent the entire chip clip game. These lil' sticks slide over the folded-over portion of the bag to provide a tight seal that'll keep your Goldfish, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, or Cool Ranch Doritos fresher for longer. Do not suffer the heartbreak of a broken chip clip any longer — upgrade and treat yourself. A jar-opening tool that will be an absolute lifesaver when that jar of Ragu is holding on to the lid like its life depends on it (to be fair, it kind of does). It has four different slots to help open a variety of jar sizes, and there's even a helpful hook at the top to help with pull-tab cans when it's a Chef Boyardee kind of night. A tub of dual-textured toner pads from K-beauty brand Medicube — it uses the power of lactic and salicylic acid to wipe away dead skin cells and help reduce the appearance of pores and blackheads. After cleansing, use the textured side for a deep exfoliation, then flip to the smooth side to soothe and mop up any excess oil. A set of family-friendly pastel "unbreakable" deep plates so sturdy they're about to become the backbone of your household. And surprisingly, they're super lightweight since they're made with wheat straw fiber! So basically, these are a must if you have accident-prone kiddos. Or spouse-os. Or roommate-os. You get it. A super effective and strangely whimsical foaming drain cleaner for anyone who simply does not want to see another expensive plumber this year. This gentle but powerful foam pulls up gunk and cleans out drains in sinks, bathtubs, and floor drains, helping prevent plumbing issues and making everything smell ~squeaky clean~. A pack of duster sponges some reviewers say are even better than the often-sold-out Scrub Daddy Damp Duster (also, why isn't it called the Dust Daddy?!) This is perfect for that annoying caked-on dust that a typical dry duster can't tackle — just dampen it, swipe, then rinse to reuse. A bottle of Lottabody's super fluffy mousse, because the days of needing to spend $30+ for quality curl products are finally over! Just scrunch some of this through your towel-dried hair and let the blend of coconut oil and shea butter add some extra moisture and bounce to your curls. Reviewers say it's super lightweight and never leaves behind a greasy or sticky residue. Or Skala's Mais Cacho Hair 2-in-1 Conditioning Treatment that's truly a multitasking marvel. You can use it as an in-shower conditioner by applying it to clean hair and rinsing out after three minutes, or you can apply it as a leave-in treatment for all-day moisture that won't weigh your curls down. A reusable gel lint roller — it looks like it's from the future and is a major upgrade from the traditional sticky rolls that require approximately 10 sheets just to clean one shirt. Just pop open the cover and roll it over any garments that need a good sprucing up, then give it a quick rinse, and it'll be ready to use again! Good Molecules Yerba Mate Wake Up Eye Gel that's basically like an espresso shot for your face. It uses the power of yerba mate to soothe the delicate skin under your eyes, caffeine to help brighten, and three forms of hyaluronic acid to moisturize. I did not know there were several types of hyaluronic acid, but I would now like to collect all of them like Pokémon. And the Catrice "Instant Awake" Under Eye Brightener, which will have you singing 🎵 "where have you been all my li-i-i-i-i-ife?" 🎵 on those busy mornings when you need to look like you got a full eight hours of sleep. It's meant to blend seamlessly into the skin and adds light coverage to dark circles. A no-scrub weekly shower cleaner that'll stop soap scum and residue from forming before they have a chance to take over your entire tub. Just spray and walk away — your future self will be so grateful. Gold Bond's firming neck and chest cream — the tube may seem unassuming, but this magic formula contains salicylic acid to gently exfoliate dead skin cells, while glycerin and aloe add some extra hydration. Put that Groupon for a laser treatment down — try this first! Veet's sensitive hair removal gel, which is basically body hair's worst nightmare. It's formulated with aloe, so it's perfect for anyone who typically deals with redness and irritation after hair removal. It's also meant to provide longer-lasting results when compared to traditional shaving and reduce the chance of ingrowns. Be prepared to pat yourself on your smooth, hairless back! A cult-favorite foot file to grind away at calluses and have your heels and toes looking silky smooth and ready to quite literally stand on business. There are many foot files out there, but more than 86,000 Amazon reviewers say this one works like a charm. An auto-open (and auto-close!) umbrella with thousands upon thousands of rave reviews. Yes, you read that right. How does a meager umbrella have that many fans? Many of them say this is truly windproof — meaning it won't flip inside out when a heavy gust of wind blows your way and embarrass you in front of the besties. They would NEVER let that go. The beloved Hard as Hoof nourishing cream made with beeswax and jojoba oil to condition brittle nails and cuticles (on your fingers AND toes!) and have them looking as shiny and fresh as they did before that gel manicure did its damage. It's designed to sink in quickly (a rare feat in the world of cuticle oils) and it also smells like coconuts. I probably should have led with the coconut part. 🥥 🤤 WellPatch migraine/headache patches that stick directly to your forehead to help provide some soothing comfort when you feel a headache coming on, or if you just need a little refresh on a super long day. You don't even need to keep these in the freezer — just remove them from the pouch and stick them on! A pack of two dark spot corrector soap bars packed with tons of vitamin C and turmeric — aka the ultimate superhero ingredients for potentially brightening and reviving dull skin. Reviewers have had luck using this on both the face and body — but we recommend giving it a patch test first on a small area to see how your skin reacts. All good? Then start sudsing away! A wide-brimmed bucket hat with two *built-in solar-powered fans* — yes, you read that correctly, there are literal fans in this hat!!! You also get a mesh panel for ventilation, a built-in sweatband to absorb sweat, and the fabric is UPF 50+ for extra sun protection. If you mean business when it comes to staying cool, this is a necessity. Bio-Collagen's Real Deep sheet mask that works overnight to refresh your skin. No, really, it's designed to be worn while you sleep — it's transfer-resistant, so it won't leave a mess on your pillow! It's infused with hyaluronic acid to hydrate, collagen to maximize absorption and minimize the appearance of pores, and probiotics to strengthen the skin's barrier. Best of all, it turns transparent when your skin is done absorbing the serum, so you'll know when it's ready to take off. A bottle of hair-building fibers to temporarily fill in bald spots and add some volume to thinning hairs. In the words of this reviewer, "WHAT IN THE HAIR SORCERY IS GOING ON?!" The sorcery in question is the tiny fibers made with follicle-mimicking molecules that grab onto your hair strands and make it look like you took a magical overnight hair growth serum.

Blemishes be gone: La Roche-Posay's acne-fighting line is on sale right now at Ulta

Summertime can be hellish for those of us with oily skin, so I'm always on the hunt for brands that aim to reduce oil production without overdrying my skin. La Roche-Posay is one of them. The brand's Effaclar line is ideal for acne-prone and sensitive skin, and right now you can shop the bestselling line of cleansers, moisturizers, toners and more for up to 25% at Ulta. Below, I rounded up some of the best deals to shop on La Roche-Posay products at Ulta. Keep in mind that a lot of these items are bestsellers and may sell out quickly, so be sure to shop while you can. Want more from NBC Select? Not only does this cleanser wash away extra oil on your skin, but it's also formulated to help clear breakouts and impurities, according to the brand. Ingredients like salicylic acid target blackheads and whiteheads, while the formula's lipo-hydroxy acid exfoliates and removes roughness and uneven texture, according to the brand. The formula is gentle enough for sensitive skin, too, and is non-comedogenic and fragrance-free. After being sent this spot treatment by La Roche-Posay, it almost immediately became my favorite product for addressing breakouts. The prescription-strength adapalene is a powerful retinoid that clears all forms of blemishes, including blackheads and whiteheads, by accelerating your skin's cell turnover, according to the brand. When I use this treatment, my pimples are half the size after the first day, and almost completely gone by the second (depending on the size). I also love how quickly it absorbs into my skin; I apply it right after my serums, and it dries down within the two minute pause I take before following up with my moisturizer. If you struggle with oily skin, this may be the right moisturizer for you. It has zinc pidolate, perlite, and silica to absorb extra oil and combat shine, while thermal spring water soothes your skin with antioxidants, according to La Roche-Posay00. The moisturizer's mattifying properties make it a great base for makeup, and the non-comedogenic formula is ideal for sensitive skin. The salicylic acid in this toner gently exfoliates your skin, which helps prevent acne, according to the brand. The toner also has glycolic acid to unclog pores and address uneven skin texture. The toner's also free from fragrance, oils and parabens, while the thermal spring water has antioxidants that calm stressed skin. This acne treatment is lightweight and non-comedogenic, making it safe to use for those with sensitive skin. It helps clear and prevent breakouts using a triple acid complex made from glycolic acid, lipo-hydroxy acid and salicylic acid, according to the brand. The complex also reduces the appearance of pores, fine lines and dark spots, while the treatment's niacinamide soothes the skin and limits any irritation. Pimple patches are great for addressing breakouts and blemishes, and these La Roche-Posay patches provide a barrier on the skin that absorb the bump's oils and fluids, according to the brand. This helps protect your breakout from any external irritation (including any picking or popping). The patches are invisible, so you can wear them on their own or even under makeup, according to the brand. Micellar water is ideal to use as a gentle cleanser for sensitive skin, especially because of how easily it removes makeup, while simultaneously toning your skin. Micelle molecules trap dirt and oil, which lets them be easily wiped away, while zinc helps remove excess oils, according to the brand. The water also has glycerin to rehydrate your skin after cleansing. This cleanser gently washes oily skin without stripping it of all its moisture, according to the brand. The key ingredient, zinc pidolate, has cleansing properties that remove excess oil, making it great for mattifying skin while still maintaining your skin's pH balance. It's also formulated without oils or alcohol, according to the brand. More La Roche-Posay deals to shop now Why trust NBC Select?
