Neil Druckmann exits HBO's ‘The Last of Us' series to focus on new game project

Neil Druckmann, co-creator of HBO's The Last of Us, has announced his departure from the acclaimed television series. In a statement shared via Naughty Dog's official Instagram, Druckmann said he is stepping away from his creative role on the show to focus fully on upcoming projects at the studio, including directing and writing a new game titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
'With work completed on Season 2 and before any meaningful work starts on Season 3, now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog,' Druckmann said. He added that co-creating the HBO adaptation has been a career highlight, praising collaborator Craig Mazin and the entire cast and crew for their dedication to faithfully adapting the beloved video game franchise.
Druckmann played a central role in the development of The Last of Us video games at Naughty Dog before co-creating the television adaptation with Mazin, known for his Emmy-winning series Chernobyl. Since its debut in 2023, the show has received widespread acclaim and earned 24 Primetime Emmy nominations. Season 2 aired earlier this year, and HBO confirmed a third season in April. Druckmann will retain an executive producer credit.
Mazin praised Druckmann's vision and partnership in a separate statement, saying, 'It's been a creative dream to work with Neil and bring his brilliant work to life on HBO. I'm beyond excited to play his next game.'
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet was first announced in December, with Tati Gabrielle set to star and music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. No release date has been confirmed.
Though stepping back from the series, Druckmann's creative legacy will continue to shape The Last of Us as it moves forward.

JK Rowling fires back at Pedro Pascal

JK Rowling has responded with her trademark sarcasm to The Last of Us actor Pedro Pascal after he doubled down on his criticism of her stance on sex-based rights. The dispute was reignited in a new Vanity Fair interview, where Pascal, 49, described Rowling as a 'heinous loser,' citing his desire to protect his transgender sibling and calling out what he sees as bullying behavior. Rowling, 59, didn't hold back. Quoting a tweet from LGBTQ+ outlet Gayety that claimed Pascal had 'shut her down,' she replied, 'Can't say I feel very shut down, but keep at it, Pedro. God loves a trier.' The original clash between the two began when Rowling celebrated a UK Supreme Court ruling that supported the right to women-only spaces, excluding biological men. She posted a cigar-smoking photo captioned, 'I love it when a plan comes together.' Pascal condemned her post at the time, calling it 'awful, disgusting' and 'heinous LOSER behaviour.' In Vanity Fair, Pascal reflected on his choice to speak out, admitting he was torn: 'It's a situation that deserves the utmost elegance... Bullies make me f***ing sick.' Rowling, however, remains unfazed. The bestselling author has faced years of backlash for her gender-critical views, particularly from Hollywood and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups. She also revealed in a separate post that Boy George has now blocked her online following a disagreement over similar issues. Rowling's message to critics remains consistent: she sees herself as standing for women's rights and says she won't be silenced, especially not by celebrities. As the online battle continues, both sides show no signs of backing down.

‘The Last of Us' co-creator, Neil Druckmann, steps back ahead of Season 3

Neil Druckmann, co-creator of HBO's The Last of Us and the mind behind the original PlayStation games, is stepping away from day-to-day creative duties on the series ahead of its third season. While he will remain on board as executive producer and co-creator, sources confirm Druckmann will not write or direct any episodes in the upcoming season. In a statement, Druckmann explained that with Season 2 completed, now is the right time to fully focus on his next chapter at Naughty Dog. 'I've made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO,' he said. 'Now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects, including writing and directing our exciting next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.' During the show's first two seasons, Druckmann worked closely with showrunner Craig Mazin, writing or co-writing five episodes and directing two. His involvement ensured the TV adaptation stayed faithful to the emotional and narrative depth of the games. Craig Mazin, who will now lead Season 3 without Druckmann's direct input, praised his collaborator: 'It's been a creative dream to work with Neil. While he focuses on his next game, I'll continue working with our amazing cast and crew to bring this story to life.' Season 3 is expected to pick up from The Last of Us Part II, focusing on new and returning characters, including Kaitlyn Dever's Abby. Whether it will be the final season remains to be seen.
