Masayoshi Son hints at succession plan while chasing AI ambition

Time of India2 days ago

Masayoshi Son
acknowledged the outlines of a succession plan at
SoftBank Group Corp
., addressing what may be investors' single biggest concern regarding the long-term future of the Japanese company.
Son said he plans to hold SoftBank's reins another ten years, but added he has several candidates for its next chief in mind from within the technology group. The candidates work alongside the billionaire every day, although he hasn't disclosed who they are to anyone, the 67-year-old said during a general shareholders' meeting in Tokyo on Friday.
Son fielded repeated questions from shareholders worried about a SoftBank without its charismatic leader or a succession plan. The chief executive officer responded that he's healthy and intends to continue to lead and aim to realize an era where
artificial intelligence
is pervasive in society.
'I look forward to seeing a successor grow as quickly as possible so that I can appoint them, but I still have some passion left and want to keep at this,' he said. Son added, however, that he's mentally prepared to hand over the reins at any time, should he stand in the way of SoftBank's growth.
He mentioned the head of telecom unit, Junichi Miyakawa, who is in charge of rolling out AI infrastructure within Japan and widely seen as an example of how others in the company can lead as Son shifts his focus elsewhere.
Miyakawa is doing 'an extremely solid job,' Son said. 'I feel very pleased, encouraged and reassured by his efforts. As a result, I have almost never felt the need to interfere in what he does. I trust him.'
SoftBank's shares rose to close up 2.5%, buoyed by a broader rally that boosted the Nikkei Stock Average.
Past lieutenants who have been officially or unofficially in the running to be Son's successor have included Nikesh Arora, Marcelo Claure and Katsunori Sago. All have left SoftBank.
One shareholder even asked if AI would either extend Son's lifespan or make it possible for Son to somehow remotely control the company from beyond the grave. Son responded by saying that while he intends to use AI 'more than anyone,' he didn't see it replacing him.
The annual shareholders' meeting has long been a platform for Son to share his vision of a future of tech-driven progress. Many investors have hung onto his words and their shares from before the dot-com boom and bust.
Shareholders asked about SoftBank's ability to finance big bets such as the Stargate data center projects, and Son's ability to deliver on his goals to lead in an age of AI.
One such project is a partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to build a large AI manufacturing hub in Arizona, Bloomberg reported earlier.
Son said he's now cornered key artificial intelligence chip architecture and seeks to become the world's top platform by the time AI surpasses human abilities — or what he and other AI proponents call artificial super-intelligence.
'We want to become the world's top platformer for ASI,' he said, adding that it'll be a winner-take-all arena. SoftBank controls chip designer Arm Holdings Plc and plans to invest as much as $30 billion in ChatGPT maker
OpenAI
. 'These are indispensable for ASI,' he said, noting also that SoftBank has acquired Graphcore Ltd. and has plans to buy Ampere Computing LLC. 'I'm all in.'

Quick escapes over long trips! Indians opt for short-haul travel to Southeast Asia; demand for distant trips dips amid global tensions

AI-generated image Short-haul destinations in Asia continue to attract Indian travellers despite a decline in long-distance travel since summer due to geopolitical issues. Countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal maintain their appeal, according to travel firms. "While travellers have considered delaying or postponing plans, Southeast Asia has emerged as a go-to destination for those seeking familiar experiences. Countries like Cambodia, Vietnam, and the Philippines have seen a 50% rise in bookings compared to last year," said Manjari Singhal, chief growth and business officer at Cleartrip, quoted by the Economic Times. "Additionally, airfares to Vietnam and Indonesia have dropped, making these destinations more accessible for budget conscious holidaymakers," she added. Neeraj Singh Dev from Thomas Cook (India) and SOTC Travel noted increased demand from late bookers for destinations offering visa-free or simplified entry, including Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Mauritius and Seychelles. "Our pipeline post reopening of schools shows continued momentum from the young professionals segment, especially for weekends and extended weekends," he added. Shivansh Kalra chose Thailand for his holiday this month, attracted by reasonable flight prices, significant discounts on luxury hotels in Bangkok and Koh Samui, and the country's visa-free policy. "Flight fares were reasonably priced, there was no hassle of visa appointments and we got great discounts on some very luxurious hotels," he said. Bharat Malik of Yatra Online attributes the sustained popularity of Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore among Indian travellers to their robust tourism infrastructure, cultural significance, and accessibility. "These destinations have remained stable and unaffected by the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, making them a preferred choice at this time," he said. "Temporary airspace restrictions impacted certain long-haul routes, and flight durations increased by 2–4 hours due to rerouting of flights. Airfares rose by nearly 15–20% on certain routes. This has naturally shifted traveller interest towards more cost-effective and shorter routes," he said, also quoted by ET. Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives reports consistent bookings from India, according to commercial director Amjad Thaufeeg. "Maldives is still one of the top choices for Indian guests looking for a quick luxurious getaway and we have seen that demand stay consistent, especially from couples and families," he said. "We are also seeing advance bookings for the upcoming festive seasons, and many guests are booking earlier to secure their preferred villas and experiences," he added. To Sam Altman's "Poaching" OpenAI Talent Charge, Meta CTO's "Dishonest" Reply

Meta has hit back at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman for alleging that the Mark Zuckerberg-led company is offering $100 million compensation packages to poach AI researchers. During an all-hands company meeting last week, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth debunked Mr Altman's claim that Meta was paying "$100 million signing bonuses" and "more than that" in compensation to recruit OpenAI workers on its AI superintelligence team, according to The Verge. "Sam is just being dishonest here," Mr Bosworth, 43, claimed during the meeting. "He implies we are doing this action for everyone. You see, the market is booming. It's not really hot." Mr Altman recently expressed his happiness that none of OpenAI's "best people" decided to join Meta. During an appearance on the Uncapped podcast last week, Mr Altman further stoked controversy, claiming Meta "started making giant offers to a lot of people on our team." "You know, like $100 million signing bonuses, more than that (in) compensation per year," he claimed. Three leading OpenAI researchers - Xiaohua Zhai, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Lucas Beyer - each denied receiving a $100 million bonus for joining Meta, claiming it was "fake news" on X (formerly Twitter). hey all, couple quick notes: 1) yes, we will be joining Meta. 2) no, we did not get 100M sign-on, that's fake news. Excited about what's ahead though, will share more in due time! cc @__kolesnikov__ and @XiaohuaZhai. — Lucas Beyer (bl16) (@giffmana) June 26, 2025 "Sam is known to exaggerate, and I know exactly why he is doing it, which is because we are succeeding at getting talent from OpenAI," Mr Bosworth said. The ChatGPT creator is engaged in a fierce battle with Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, to create cutting-edge artificial intelligence. Mark Zuckerberg, 41, has recently intensified his efforts to develop superintelligence-AI that is more intelligent than humans in terms of knowledge, memory, and reasoning. The company reportedly invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and established a new AI lab aimed at obtaining "superintelligence." Meta has acquired the services of former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross, the CEO of Safe Superintelligence, a $32 billion AI business. Trapit Bansal, a key AI researcher who has worked with OpenAI since 2022 and helped develop the company's initial AI reasoning model, reportedly departed the company for Meta on Thursday, according to TechCrunch.
