The post of a Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) was formally created in December 2019, with the appointment of General Bipin Rawat as the first CDS. The necessity of a CDS had been first mooted as a recommendation of the Kargil Review Committee led by K Subrahmanyam after the 1999 Kargil War to address the issue of the lack of jointness among the three Services. Subsequently, in 2001, a Group of Ministers report reiterated the need for a CDS to ensure better coordination and integration among the armed forces. P.V. Narasimha Rao's portrait unveiled at Raj Bhavan
Governor of Telangana Jishnu Dev Varma unveiled the portrait of former Prime Minister of India P.V. Narasimha Rao, at Raj Bhavan, on the eve of the distinguished leader's birth anniversary. A special ceremony to honour Kargil War veterans will also be organised to mark the proud occasion. With the addition of PV's portrait, the Raj Bhavan is already embellished with portraits of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and the last Nizam of Hyderabad Mir Osman Ali Khan, representing India's diverse and distinguished leadership. Principal Secretary to the Governor M. Dana Kishore and senior officials were present.

For interoperability, CDS can now issue joint directive to 3 services

Defence minister Rajnath Singh gave the enhanced powers to the CDS and the first joint order was issued on Tuesday, officials said. The first order on 'Approval, Promulgation and Numbering of Joint Instructions and Joint Orders', focuses on the need to streamline procedures, eliminate redundancies and enhance cross-service cooperation."This initiative lays the foundation for improved transparency, coordination and administrative efficiency in the three services. It also marks the beginning of a new era of jointness and integration," officials said.
