UAE: Driver ordered to pay Dh51,450 after running red light, not paying traffic fines

Khaleej Times7 hours ago
A court in Abu Dhabi ordered a man to pay Dh51,450 to his former employer, after he ran a red light and failed to repay the traffic fines the company covered on his behalf.
According to Abu Dhabi Labour Court documents, the company filed a lawsuit against the driver, demanding he repay the amount it had to cover due to his violation.
The company also requested a 5% late payment fee from the date of the claim until full settlement, along with legal costs and lawyer fees.
As reported by Al Khaleej local newspaper, the company argued that the driver, who was employed as a taxi driver with a total salary of Dh800, committed a traffic violation by running a red light.
While the driver was fined Dh3,000, the company ended up paying Dh50,000 in penalties, plus Dh1,450 in transport-related fees. Despite multiple attempts, the former employee did not reimburse the company.
The court reviewed the driver's salary report, work contract, and other documents in the case file. It confirmed that the driver was employed by the company under a fixed-term contract as a taxi driver.
The company provided authorities with a proof that it paid Dh51,450.
The court referred to Article 1 of the Evidence Law, which says that the plaintiff must prove their right, and the defendant has the right to refute it, with the burden of proof resting on the plaintiff. Since the company showed clear proof of payment, the court ruled in its favour and ordered the driver to pay back the full amount.

Saudia Airlines transports 17.5m passengers in H1 2025 with world-leading on-time performance

Saudia Airlines has reported a strong performance for the first half of 2025, carrying more than 17.5m passengers — a 7.2 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024 — as the airline continues its growth trajectory across domestic and international markets. According to the carrier's latest operational report, more than 100,000 flights were operated across four continents, up 4 per cent year-on-year, with more than 293,000 flight hours recorded. The airline also achieved an impressive on-time performance rate of 89.6 per cent, topping global rankings in both March and June 2025, according to aviation data firm Cirium. Saudia international and domestic growth International passengers: More than 9.6m, a 5 per cent increase, supported by upwards of 43,700 international flights (+3 per cent) Domestic passengers: 7.9m, up 10 per cent, across more than 56,000 flights These numbers reflect Saudia's expanding reach and operational efficiency, backed by its fleet of 148 aircraft and bolstered by the airline's strategy to connect global travellers to the Kingdom. Saudia is poised for further expansion with the planned delivery of 117 new aircraft in the coming years. These will increase seat capacity on existing routes, enable access to new global destinations and strengthen air connectivity in line with Saudi Arabia's national objectives across tourism, entertainment, sports, and Hajj and Umrah.

Mideast Stocks: Most Gulf bourses rise on US data, trade talks

Most stock markets in the Gulf ended higher on Tuesday after data showed a smaller than expected rise in core U.S. inflation and talks between Washington and major trading partners continued. U.S. President Donald Trump signalled he was open to discussions on tariffs after his weekend threat to impose 30% duties on imports from the European Union and Mexico from August 1. U.S. consumer prices picked up in June, likely marking the start of a long-anticipated tariff-induced increase in inflation that has kept the Federal Reserve cautious about resuming its interest rate cuts. However, the increase was in line with expectations and the core reading rose less than forecast. The Fed's actions have a significant impact on the Gulf region's monetary policy, as most regional currencies are pegged to the U.S. dollar. Dubai's main share index advanced 1%, buoyed by a 5.2% surge in top lender Emirates NBD and a 1.8% increase in blue-chip developer Emaar Properties. In Abu Dhabi, the index gained 0.7%, with Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank jumping 7.6%, its biggest intraday rise since April 2020. The lender posted second-quarter net profit of 2.32 billion dirham ($631.65 million), exceeding analysts' consensus estimate, according to data compiled by LSEG. The upbeat results boosted sentiment across the banking sector, with both Abu Dhabi and Dubai benefiting from renewed investor confidence in financials, said George Pavel, general manager at Middle East. "Dubai's market also drew strength from its real estate sector, adding to the positive momentum," he added. The Qatari index closed up 0.5%, led by a 1.7% increase in the Gulf's biggest lender Qatar National Bank . Saudi Arabia's benchmark index declined 1.1%, hit by a 1.3% fall in Al Rajhi Bank. Elsewhere, oil giant Saudi Aramco fell 1.1%. Oil prices - a catalyst for the Gulf's financial markets - were little changed after Trump's lengthy 50-day deadline for Russia to end its Ukraine war and avoid sanctions eased immediate supply concerns. Outside the Gulf, Egypt's blue-chip index gained 0.6%. SAUDI ARABIA dropped 1.1% to 11,095 Abu Dhabi rose 0.9% to 10,151 Dubai gained 1% to 5,914 QATAR added 0.5% to 10,770 EGYPT was up 0.6% to 33,935 BAHRAIN edged 0.1% up to 1,953 OMAN dropped 0.3% to 4,613 KUWAIT declined 0.3% to 9,341

Publsh has also signed an exclusive partnership with Brand ME summit, the region's largest ever gathering for personal branding which will attract over 6,000 attendees, taking place in Dubai's vibrant City Walk in November 2025. "J1 Beach is a lifestyle signal,' commented Kushal Desai, managing director and co-founder of Publsh Group. The purpose-built creative hub will house integrated strategy, production, and innovation teams, supporting global brands seeking deeper resonance across the Middle East.
