Italy's Bergamo airport temporarily closed after runway death
Flight operations were suspended from 10.20am till midday local time (4.20-6pm GMT) "due to a problem that occurred on the taxiway," the airport said in a statement, adding that authorities were investigating.
A spokesperson confirmed that a man had died, adding that he was neither a passenger nor a member of airport staff.
According to the ANSA news agency, the man was sucked into the engine of a departing plane. He ran toward the moving aircraft, chased by airport police who were unable to stop him, it added.
The Bergamo police had no immediate comment.
Spanish low-cost carrier Volotea said in a statement that following an incident with an engine of its 10.35am flight to Asturias, "one person who was not on board ... and has no connection with the company suffered serious injuries."
The 154 passengers on the plane were rescheduled on an afternoon flight and offered psychological support, as were crew members who may have been traumatised by the events, Volotea added.

"So, with the help every single day of my teammates, we achieved this result. Today was a really tough stage... We controlled it from the beginning, of course, with the help of some other teams. AC Milan forward Rafael Leao has become well known for his tricks and flicks – often while smiling on the pitch, which has endeared him to Milan fans all over the globe. SINGAPORE – Rafael Leao has been one of the Serie A's brightest sparks since his breakout season in the 2021-22 campaign, where he registered 11 goals and 10 assists as AC Milan claimed their 19th Scudetto . In that same season, t he Portuguese winger won the Serie A Most Valuable Player (MVP) award and became well known for his tricks and flicks – often while smiling on the pitch, which endeared him to Milan fans all over the globe. One lucky fan caught a 'case' of Leao's infectious joy at Milan's open training session at Bishan Stadium on July 22. Feng Yuming could hardly stop grinning from ear to ear after Leao – his favourite player – wished him a happy 17th birthday. Yuming even managed to snag a photo with Leao, though he expressed some disappointment at not having any memorabilia to be signed, and instead settled for the Portuguese winger's autograph on a piece of white paper. Said Yuming, who turned 17 on July 22: 'I didn't bring a jersey because the jersey (I have) is totally black. I brought a black pen so even if it was signed you cannot see anything.
