Saudi club Al Hilal stun Man City 4-3 to enter Club World Cup quarters

Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal have sent English giants Manchester City crashing out of the Club World Cup, snatching a shock 4-3 victory in extra time in the biggest upset of the tournament so far. The match finished 2-2 at full-time on Monday, but at the end of an eventful extra – time Marcos Leonardo grabbed the winner and pulled off one of the greatest wins in Middle Eastern football history. The Saudi club advance to the quarterfinals where they will face Brazilian club Fluminense, ensuring a non-European team will reach the last four. City had taken the lead in the ninth minute in controversial fashion, Bernardo Silva finishing after Rayan Ait -Nouri's cross. Al Hilal players protested Ait -Nouri had controlled with his arm in the build-up but the goal stood. City had plenty of opportunities to extend their lead before the break but a combination of poor finishing and inspired goalkeeping from Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou kept the lead at a single goal. Al Hilal offered several reminders of their threat on the break but City had even more chances with Jeremy Doku volleying straight at Bounou who moments later reacted superbly again to keep out a Bernardo effort. The question as to whether City would live to regret not converting those chances was answered within a minute of the resumption. Former City full-back Joao Cancelo's low cross was parried out by Ederson, Malcolm pounced but saw his shot blocked by Ruben Dias only for the ball to loop to Marcos Leonardo to head home the equaliser. Six minutes later and the City's high defensive line was exposed by a long ball from Cancelo which Brazilian Malcolm raced on to and he showed power and pace as he broke away before coolly slotting past Ederson. The Saudi fans in the crowd went wild while Pep Guardiola responded immediately with a triple substitution with midfielder Rodri and defenders Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji introduced. That brought some much needed stability to a shaky back line but City needed improvement at the other end too and it came, albeit in scruffy circumstances. The Al Hilal defence were unable to deal with a Bernardo corner and Erling Haaland pounced to steer home the loose ball and make it 2-2. City piled on the pressure as they looked for the winner but yet again Bounou proved their nemesis as he denied Akanji and Ruben Dias and even when he was beaten by Haaland, substitute Ali Lajami produced a magnificent goal-line clearance. Guardiola took off Haaland and introduced Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush as the game went into extra time. But for all City's depth, Al Hilal had a deep well of spirit to draw upon and just four minutes into the opening period Al Hilal regained the lead when Kalidou Koulibaly rose superbly to meet a Ruben Neves corner with a brilliantly angled header. City responded with a goal of real quality when Rayan Cherki's brilliantly floated ball towards the back post was poked home masterfully by Phil Foden, at full stretch and from the tightest of angles. But incredibly Al Hilal responded again to restore their lead – Sergej Milinkovic-Savic 's header was saved by Ederson but Marcos Leonardo followed in to bundle the ball over the line. As the celebrating Al Hilal fans poured out of the stadium, the Brazilian striker let his emotions pour out. 'I've had a difficult time in the last two months. My mother spent 70 days in the ICU,' he said. 'Today she's fine, thank God. When I scored those two goals, I thought of her. She was able to watch the match.' City skipper Bernardo Silva said his team had paid the price for being unable to deal with Al Hilal's counter-attacking. 'We scored three and could've scored five, six. It was all about controlling when we lost the ball, controlling the transitions, don't let them run, and they ran way too many times,' he said. 'With one, two passes there was always a feeling of danger coming from them. When we allow teams to run like this we always suffer a lot, and today was the case,' he said.

Monterrey, Inter Milan, Dortmund and Fluminense in Club World Cup last 16

Mexican club Monterrey have booked a spot in the knockout rounds of the Club World Cup with a thumping 4-0 win over Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds at the Rose Bowl. Three goals in eight first-half minutes sent the side on their way to victory on Wednesday, as they claimed second place in Group E behind Inter Milan, whose 2-0 victory over River Plate eased some nerves for the European giants. Stunning long-range strikes from Nelson Deossa and Jesus Corona came either side of German Berterame's cool finish to set up Monterrey a last 16 meeting with Borussia Dortmund. Deossa put Monterrey in front on the half-hour mark with a swerving long-range shot and Berterame doubled the advantage four minutes later. Corona added the third with the pick of the goals from distance in the 38th minute before Berterame scored the fourth in second-half stoppage time. 'I'm really very happy we're in the next stage,' said Monterrey coach Domenec Torrent. 'We're very happy because we have a clean sheet , it's not easy in this group especially with the group that we had.' Meanwhile, Inter Milan kept their cool to beat nine-man and eliminate River Plate, booking a knockout tie against Fluminense. The Champions League runners-up faced a tough battle in Seattle against an aggressive River Plate side, who had Lucas Martinez and Gonzalo Montiel sent off in front of 45,000 fans at Lumen Field. Francesco Esposito scored his first Inter goal to put the Italians ahead and Alessandro Bastoni made the game safe later on for Christian Chivu's side. 'In the first half we were surprised by their intensity, aggression and pressure,' said Chivu. 'Then in the second half we raised our level of intensity… We're strong, confident and have players who can play such a game.' With Monterrey ahead against Urawa, River needed a winner to progress, but their job got harder when Martinez was sent off after 66 minutes for hacking down veteran Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Six minutes later teenage striker Esposito steered home the opener to leave River on the brink. Bastoni ensured Inter's progress as he drilled home, before River's Gonzalo Montiel picked up a second yellow and was dismissed. There were ugly scenes at the end as River fans threw objects at Inter players leaving the pitch. Both Argentinian teams at the tournament, River and their rivals Boca Juniors, have been eliminated despite their fans creating vibrant atmospheres. 'It's a shame for all the people who came en masse to watch the team that we couldn't give them the chance to keep going,' said disappointed River coach Marcelo Gallardo. Also in Group F, Fluminense could only draw 0-0 against South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns, but it was enough to claim second place behind Dortmund, who defeated Ulsan HD 1-0 to claim top spot in Group F. Sundowns' exit means none of the four African clubs who came to the tournament will feature in the last 16, but their performances mean they can go home with their heads held high. 'We leave and go home with our heads up because we are much stronger than we were when we came here,' said the South African champions' coach, Miguel Cardoso. On Thursday, Manchester City face Juventus in a battle for top spot in Group G, while Spanish giants Real Madrid face RB Salzburg as they bid to progress from Group H.

Heartbreak in Club World Cup as Inter oust Urawa, Dortmund edge Sundowns

Inter Milan have come from behind to beat Urawa Red Diamonds and knock the Japanese side out of the Club World Cup, while Borussia Dortmund held off Mamelodi Sundowns to win a seven-goal thriller in hot conditions. Fluminense rallied in the second half to beat Ulsan 4-2 and knock out the South Korean side, while Monterrey and River Plate played out an entertaining goalless draw as the tournament entered its second week on Saturday. At Lumen Field in Seattle, Ryoma Watanabe got an early opening goal for Urawa Reds, who were backed by a noisy contingent of their supporters. But captain Lautaro Martinez – who got Inter's equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Monterrey of Mexico in their opening game – repeated the trick to level matters with a clever overhead kick 12 minutes from time. Valentin Carboni was then the unlikely hero as he grabbed the winner two minutes into injury time. The result left some Urawa fans in tears and Inter level on four points with River Plate with the two teams meeting next. River Plate were let down by their finishing in a scrappy, foul-ridden encounter with Mexico's Monterrey, who sit on two points. Esteban Andrada, Monterrey's Argentinian keeper, made a series of saves while River's forwards were unable to put away the few chances that came their way. Monterrey could still make it into the last 16 if they beat Urawa and River, or Inter win their game. Dortmund break South African hearts in Cincinnati 'sauna' Earlier, Jobe Bellingham got his first goal for Dortmund as his new club overcame stifling heat in Cincinnati to beat Sundowns 4-3 and move to four points from two matches in Group F. The South African champions had taken a surprise early lead through a fine solo goal from Lucas Ribeiro. However, Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams handed Dortmund their equaliser on a plate, passing the ball straight to Felix Nmecha, who stroked home. Serhou Guirassy gave Dortmund the lead with his 35th goal since the beginning of the season. English midfielder Bellingham, who this month followed older brother Jude's footsteps in joining the German side from Sunderland, started for the first time for Dortmund and made it 3-1 just before the break. Khuliso Mudau's own goal made it 4-1 before the hour mark, but Sundowns salvaged some pride by reducing the deficit through Iqraam Rayners and Lebo Mothiba. 'I'm sweating like I've just come out of a sauna,' said Dortmund coach Niko Kovac when asked about the conditions in a game which started at midday local time. 'It was tough going for both teams, but the opposition are used to it. We certainly didn't give our best performance, but that wasn't possible today.' Sundowns will still go into their final game in Group F with a chance of qualifying for the last 16. 'The boys made a wonderful performance… it was a hell of a match. I'm not happy but very proud,' said their Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso. South Korea's Ulsan gave Fluminense a real scare in their Group F clash at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, leading 2-1 until the 66th minute before the Brazilians ran out 4-2 winners, eliminating the K-League champions in the process. Colombian striker Jhon Arias put Fluminense ahead with a 27th-minute free-kick, but goals from Lee Jin-hyun and Um Won-sang gave Ulsan the advantage at the break. Nonata levelled for the Brazilians in the 66th minute before Juan Freytes put Fluminense ahead in the 83rd minute, slotting home after a scramble in the box. Keno added a fourth in stoppage time to leave Fluminense on top of the group, level on 4 points with Borussia Dortmund ahead of their final game against South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns in Miami on Wednesday. A win or draw for the Rio club in their final group game will ensure their passage into the last 16.
