SUPER ECLIPSE (2) wasn't far behind the placegetters in her first two starts at Canterbury. Raced keenly when resuming with a third to Outta Line in a Super Maiden here. ZAMAZING (4) was third to Celtic Sin at his only run here back in May when resuming. Led and caught on the line by Steel Rain over 1600m at Gosford last start. OMAHA SANDS (3) was OK in his first two runs back from a spell before a third to Steel Rain and Zamazing. Was steadied late when awkwardly placed on heels.

GAMP (2) laid in and wasn't fully tested when a length second to Hoku at Newcastle first-up. Led and run down by the favourite Bev's Nine over this track and distance last start. COPPERLINE (7) is a brother to Ritzsun on debut. Very good in leading all the way to win his last two trials, the latest by over four lengths from Star Of Indigo on the Beaumont on July 9. WAL'S ME MATE (1) has solid metro form with placings at Kensington and Warwick Farm over 1250m and 1200m. First go at 1000m.

RACE 3: MIDWAY MAIDEN HANDICAP (1300m)
FIREWORK (1) kicked off last campaign with back-to-back second placings behind Fly Scotty Fly and Money Team over 1100m and 1200m here on his home track. Narrowly beaten by Denial at Kembla first-up this time off the back on one soft trial. Will be better for the run. PICCADERRO (2) was bumped at the top of the straight when third to Sugar Island at Coffs Harbour last start. Blinkers off, winkers and crossover nose band on. ALFRED (4) will be better for his first-up fifth at Gosford and a step up in trip.

EXTRA HEIGHTS (2) is a first starter by Extreme Choice. Jumped well before drifting back and sitting three-wide before sailing down the outside rail when a neck second to Koibito in his July 11 Randwick trial. IMPURITEZE (9) is a debutant by Trapeze Artist from a daughter of Bold Promise. Settled midfield and closed nicely when second to Valedictorian in his Randwick heat the same day. FABRES (7) race wide without cover when third to Sapling and Tequisoda when resuming here on July 5. Drawn out again.

AGED CARE (3) had cardiac arrhythmia when resuming at Scone back in May. Had a trial and retuned with a win at Port Macquarie before a second to Malabar here after racing wide without cover. CALIFORNIA SECRET (2) placed once in his first six starts but has found his best form this campaign. He started with a barnstorming win at Muswellbrook and followed with wins at Newcastle to complete the hat-trick. Game in defeat behind Audrey's Lane over 1400m last start. CELTIC SIN (5) has claims on his win two starts back.

RACE 6: PROVINCIAL CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1350m)
IMPRESSIONISM (1) ended is first campaign with back-to-back seconds in the country. Resumed over 1300m at Newcastle and defied a betting drift to led all-the-way and beat Bohemian Art before going for another break. THE PACIFIC (4) improved off his first-up run to break his maiden at Kembla second-up last campaign. Will take improvement from his first-up seventh at Newcastle over 1200m. JUSTICE WARRIOR (2) has always shown nice ability and finally broke through with an all-the-way win at Tamworth. Will take plenty of confidence from that victory.
BET: IMPRESSIONISM to win.
RACE 7: BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1200m)
GRAPHIC SIGHT (12) was given a good break after his debut third at Canberra last December when racing three-wide. Returned with a stylish all-the-way win at Goulburn on July 8. BURJ (6) resumed with a sixth behind a dominant Diddle Dumpling over 1000m at Gosford on June 12 and returned there a month later when a short head second to Divine Vicky over 1100m. Her maiden win was over 1300m so she will appreciate a step up in trip here. TRUE AMOR (1) dropped in grade and led all-the-way here last start. Chance again although wide gate isn't ideal.

RACE 8: BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1600m)
HOW MUCH BETTER (1) has been good in his three runs this campaign including a last start third to Audrey's Lane over 1400m at Newcastle. Back a little in grade but steps up to the mile which will suit him ideally. Unbeaten on his home track. DUBAI WARRIOR (4) was beaten as an odds-on fav at Wagga when sitting midfield. Freshened and appreciated rolling along in front to win here last start. COSMIC LAD (2) has claims on his first-up win here.

Simon Goodwin sacked by Melbourne Demons after weeks of turmoil

Former Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin says he is 'disappointed' after he was sacked by the Demons on Monday night in a turn of events few saw coming. The axe was swung so quickly that the playing group was not even made aware of the news before it was leaked through the press on Tuesday morning. The premiership winning coach had a checkered past while in charge which saw him hit with allegations of inappropriate conduct along with accusations he used 'illicit substances'. Goodwin was contracted through to the end of the 2026 season, however, the club determined they wanted a change made instantly. According to Code Sports, he will receive a one-million dollar payout as part of the contract termination. The 48-year-old coach and club president Brad Green fronted a media conference on Tuesday afternoon. Goodwin, who led the club to its first premiership in 57 years, said: 'I'm disappointed because I think we're a hell of a lot closer to turning our club and team back into a contender again than what people think. 'I'm disappointed I won't be able to work with this great bunch of players I know we've developed and spent a lot of time developing.' He confirmed he was given the offer of coaching through to the end of the season, but rejected the deal. Green said assistant coach Troy Chaplin will step in as caretaker coach for the remainder of the 2025 season. Goodwin 'got it wrong' behind the scenes Goodwin had found himself on an increasingly hot seat with the Demons languishing in the lower half of the ladder with a 7-13 record. But most would have assumed his job was safe coming off an 83-point win over the Eagles on Saturday. Despite all the growing noise, Goodwin was adamant he had the backing of the board in the wake of the club's historic loss to St Kilda two weeks ago. 'I feel incredibly supported by the board,' he said at the time. He said with a smile on Tuesday that he 'obviously got that wrong'. Green said players were 'hurting' after hearing the news. 'I spoke to the playing group an hour ago. They're obviously disappointed,' he said. 'I've been in that position. I was a player. It's tough. They would be hurting. Simon's a premiership coach. He's a terrific person. They have the utmost respect for Simon.' Coach cuts off boss in middle of conference Goodwin had reporters laughing when he cut Green off as the president was responding to a question. The veteran coach leaned backwards in his chair and grimaced when Green was asked bluntly if the Round 20 loss to the Saints was the reason Goodwin had been sacked. As Green began his response, Goodwin, in mock anguish said, 'Bloody Nasiah, hey'. Saints star Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera was unstoppable in the Saints' extraordinary comeback win and kicked the match-winning goal. Green eventually said: 'That didn't have any bearing on the outcome, no'. Goodwin said he was not blindsided, despite the huge win over the Eagles just a few days ago. 'I did mention to Gawny (captain Max Gawn) I don't think any coach has been sacked after an 83 point win,' he said. Club legend 'absolutely stunned' Club great Garry Lyon was 'shocked' to learn of Goodwin's axing after being informed live on air Tuesday morning. 'I'm stunned, shocked, totally shocked,' Lyon said on SEN Breakfast. 'I had no heads up on this whatsoever. Absolutely just shocked, I can't get my head around it. 'He won't be coaching a farewell game, that's something I can promise you.' Lyon believed a call on Goodwin's future wouldn't be made until the end of the season before praising Goodwin as a hero for guiding the club to a drought-breaking premiership. 'I'm absolutely stunned. I thought there would be a long review at the end of this year and then determine whether he would coach out his final year,' he added. 'Premiership coaches are pretty rare at the Melbourne footy club. He's one of four. 'He will be a hero of this football club forever and a day, but that obviously doesn't guarantee your tenure. 'This is a massive call.' The club are facing an uncertain offseason with several star players finding themselves in swirling trade rumours. Clayton Oliver was reportedly halfway out the door at the end of the 2024 season and is expected to once again find himself in the thick of trade talks. Fellow midfield superstar Christian Petracca also contemplated a trade away from the club last season before ultimately staying put. But with another lacklustre season in the books, rumours are already ramping up that the 29-year-old could be eyeing off greener pastures. 'Is the writing on the wall for Christian Petracca at Melbourne?,' Jay Clark posed on Fox Footy's The First Crack. 'It doesn't feel like there's a (trade) market for Clayton Oliver at the moment and Jack Viney is a Demon for life. Petracca is the one who has been frozen out. 'Can he accept he could be more of a permanent forward at Melbourne as the new era settles in? Like Toby Greene. Or does he at 29 years of age still think he can be that superstar on-baller? 'Because if he does, maybe that has to be at another club. We talked a lot about Collingwood and Carlton last year, is the best fit for him Hawthorn?' Melbourne will finish the 2025 season with games against the Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn and Collingwood. The club has yet to announce who will take over as caretaker coach for the remaining games. TIMELINE OF SIMON GOODWIN OFF-FIELD ISSUES - February 2021: Melbourne directors hold discussions with AFL leaders including former chief executive Gillon McLachlan and chairman Richard Goyder about concerns over Goodwin's conduct and club culture. Goodwin denies accusations he used 'illicit substances'. - Mixed reports from 2018 to 2021 detail allegations that Goodwin engaged in off field misconduct including drinking and gambling with players. He is also accused of inappropriate behaviour while drinking with players at a pub on Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula. February 2022: It is revealed via legal documents that in 2020 Goodwin had an X rated rant towards Dr Zeeshan Arain over concussion management involving Angus Brayshaw. Dr Arain was reportedly sacked in October 2020 days after lodging concerns with CEO Gary Pert over the club's culture. It's believed he received six-figure payout for his legal claims of alleged bullying incidents involving Goodwin. October 2023: Goodwin again denies he has any off-field behavioural issues. Clayton Oliver is accused of bending windscreen wipers on parked cars and it is seen as further evidence of a poor culture at the club. March 2024: Independent MP Andrew Wilkie uses parliamentary privilege to make accusations of serious misconduct against the AFL and the Melbourne Demons. Arain gives testimony the AFL conducted illicit drug tests to help players avoid being detected on game days. July 2025: After spiralling down the AFL ladder and with serious concern superstar Christian Petracca may request to leave the club, the Demons' board of directors consider terminating Goodwin's contract. Recharged jockey Michael Dee sets high goals this spring following a season to savour
Group 1 jockey Michael Dee could fulfil Australian and international ambitions with another strong domestic season. Dee started with a feature Flemington double last Saturday, only his second meeting back after two months riding in Japan. Dee spent a month in Europe and UK to recharge before the Australian season. He moved to 15 career Group 1 wins last season, with a second Blue Diamond Stakes success and a special homecoming New Zealand Derby triumph. The Kiwi expat could build on the tally early in the spring with Magic Time aimed at the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) next month. Dee piloted Magic Time to victory in the 2023 Sir Rupert Clarke and 2024 All Aged Stakes. The 29-year-old rode 32 winners in Melbourne last season at a healthy 13 per cent strike rate. Dee has the lure of a three-month contract to ride in Japan next year but success on the home front matters most right now. 'It's not set in stone (next year), depends how everything goes,' Dee said. 'If I'm having an absolute pearler of a season here, this season, it would probably be very beneficial for me to go back there. 'They travel their horses everywhere and their horses always can compete at the highest level when they go anywhere … they go to Dubai, Saudi, Kentucky, everywhere. 'If I was lucky enough to go back and pick something up … you never know.' Dee, or any other Australian jockey, need not look far for inspiration with globetrotter Damian Lane the toast of Japanese racing and fans alike. Lane has ridden 177 winners the past six years in Japan including six Grade 1 triumphs. The success and connections has led to Lane riding Japanese horses to victory abroad in Australia, Hong Kong and the Middle East. 'He's (Lane) basically got the pick of the rides really (in Japan),' Dee said. 'He's almost the Zac Purton of Hong Kong in Japan, he's been there a fair few times now and built his connections. 'Whereas myself, it's tough in two months to properly build connections ... it should be better next time I go.' Dee, who rode five winners in Japan from 130 starters and placed on 20 occasions, appreciated the life and career experience. 'It's hard to explain how different it is (Japanese racing) unless you've actually been there,' Dee said. 'Everything you could think of is just different. How they train, the surfaces they run on, track work, race day, everything is different. 'I had to adapt coming from here to there, tweak how they run races and their horses and style of running, it's not very similar to here (as) races are run different (faster tempo). 'I've certainly learned a lot, whether I can bring a lot of that here, I'm sure, we'll soon find out.' Dee experienced the racing fandom in Japan firsthand with picture requests at airports and like. 'They treat their jockeys like we would (AFL) footballers or something like that, probably even more so,' Dee said. Dee has two rides at Sandown on Wednesday with Mr Independent in race two while Laa De Sha contests race eight.
