Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus made sweeping changes to his team for the second Test against Italy on Saturday in Gqeberha.
Veteran fullback Willie le Roux will play in his 100th Test in a new-look backline that does not feature any player who started against the Azzuri in the first clash in Pretoria. Edwill van der Merwe will get his second cap for the world champions as he joins fellow winger Makazole Mapimpi and Le Roux in the back three for the duel in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (5.10 pm kick-off).
The exciting duo of Grant Williams and Manie Libbok will start as scrumhalf and flyhalf, respectively. In a surprising midfield, Canan Moodie partners with André Esterhuizen to complete the backline.

Up front, there's a welcome sight of Pieter-Steph du Toit returning after a lengthy injury lay-off and a lock-pairing of Ruan Nortjé and Salmaan Moerat. Moerat will resume the captaincy duties. There is still no sign of regular skipper Siya Kolisi, who missed the previous two games through injury, as the Boks manage their leader.
Erasmus also named three uncapped players, tighthead prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye, utility forward Cobus Wiese and utility back Ethan Hooker, as part of a five-three replacement bench split. Wiese could run out with his World Cup-winning brother Jasper when he takes to the field, and they will become the 37th brother-pairing for the national side. The last pair was Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse.
South Africa's eighth Test centurion will be joined by three uncapped players in the #Springboks' match-23 for Saturday's return Test against Italy in Gqeberha 💯#ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) July 8, 2025
Only seven players featured in last weekend's clash after Erasmus promised to ring the changes following a rather disappointing 42-24 victory at Loftus Versfeld.
'Willie has been a stalwart for us in the last few years after making his debut against Italy in Durban in 2013, and he's a fantastic playmaker, so we are thrilled to see him achieve this incredible feat,' Erasmus said about the playmaker's 100th match.
'Only seven players in Springbok history have played 100 Tests before him, and to reach this milestone is testament to the player and team man that Willie is. Having come a long way with him during his career, I have no doubt that he'll put the team before his own achievements this weekend, and as a team we would certainly like to make it a special and memorable occasion for him.'
11 players who are yet to feature for the Boks in 2025 included in the 23 for Saturday – and 3 set for their Test debuts.

Edwill told himself he wouldn't be a one-cap Springbok: ‘I'm very grateful'

The winger will join Makazole Mapimpi and Willie le Roux in the back three on Saturday, a duo he spoke of with high praise. Springbok wing Edwill van der Merwe is set to play his second Test after more than a year since his debut. Picture: Richard Huggard/Gallo Images Humbled and honoured to be selected to play against Italy at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, Edwill van der Merwe admitted he feared he'd be a one-cap Springbok after being out of the squad for more than a year. The 29-year-old winger made his debut against Wales in Twickenham in June 2024. He defended well in that game, but will be remembered for sidestepping a defender and breaking through a tackle attempt to score a dazzling try in the 75th minute. Unfortunately, Van der Merwe picked up an injury shortly after the game, and strong performances from other wings kept him out of the Bok squad since then. But good showings for the Lions in the United Rugby Championship this season, where he completed 20 clean breaks (ninth in the tournament) and scored eight tries (tied seventh in the tournament), saw him shine as the Johannesburg side's most dangerous player. It earned him an offer from the star-studded Sharks, who he will join next season, and finally a second call-up to the national team. Edwill honoured and eager 'Being back in the mix, playing for the Boks is a massive honour and a privilege, something that I've worked hard towards,' he said. 'I think it will be extra special playing on home soil. My parents are driving up from Cape Town, my wife will be here, and my sister. I think the family in the stands — it's a special moment for them as well.' When asked if he feared becoming one of many players who earn just a single Springbok cap before being cast aside, he admitted he did. 'The biggest goal of mine was to play for the Springboks. When I got one cap, I told myself I didn't want to be a one-cap Bok. So, to get this opportunity again, I am very grateful. 'I know it is only through the grace of God that I am sitting here again. I think it's almost a year and a month later that I am getting this opportunity, so I'm looking forward to Saturday.' Van der Merwe leans on more experienced Boks Van der Merwe said playing with Makazole Mapimpi and Willie le Roux in the back three would make it an easy return. The wing and fullback have 46 and 99 Test caps, respectively, and Van der Merwe said they would marshal the backline when a strong result was needed. The Springboks secured a 42–24 victory against Italy in the first Test at Loftus last weekend. But it was deemed underpar and labelled 'frustrating' by Bok coach Rassie Erasmus, coming against the 10th-ranked and understrength Italian side in South Africa. 'A guy like Willie brings a wealth of experience,' Van der Merwe said. 'Mapimpi has helped me with small areas of my game. Just leaning on those guys for advice and little tricks of the trade. They've been there and done that, so playing with them gives me a lot of confidence.' He added that Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse were perhaps the two best wings in the world. 'So for me to learn from those guys, see what they are doing and try and apply that to my game is massive for me,' he said.

Libbok and Williams set to ignite Springboks' attack in second Test against Italy

Flyhalf Manie Libbok will look to get the Springbok backline running on the attack with scrumhalf Grant Williams against Italy in the second Test in Gqeberha on Saturday afternoon. Image: BackpagePix The Springboks have put their disappointing performance against Italy last weekend behind them and are ready to take the second Test on Saturday by the scruff of the neck to seal the two-Test series. After scoring six tries at Loftus Versfeld in the 42-24 victory, the expectation in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (5.10 pm start) is that the Springbok attack will again dominate their opponents, but with more precision and craftiness. The partnership of flyhalf Manie Libbok and Grant Williams will be crucial for this to happen, as they partner for only the third time at international level. But they will lead an exciting attacking backline, and Williams will look to find his form early as he returns from an injury layoff. 'Willie is a great team man and player, and he certainly deserves this honour' 🤝#Springboks #ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) July 9, 2025 Video Player is loading. Le Roux is set to play in his 100th Springbok Test match. Libbok said on Wednesday afternoon he is excited to restart his partnership with the nippy Williams. They are like-minded players who always look to catch the defence out, whether it's with a sniping run, their passing or kicking into space. 'It will be the third game Grant and I play together, so I'm really looking forward to it, much like I'm excited to have André and Canan with us in the midfield, and Willie at the back,' Libbok said about the backline. The team's mindset is good, and we are really looking forward to the game. 'We've been very focused this week and locked in on the task at hand. Italy is definitely going to come hard at us, but I believe both sides will be up for what is going to be a great contest.' They will not only look to make it a special occasion for Le Roux in his 100th, but also for prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye, utility forward Cobus Wiese and utility back Ethan Hooker, who are all set to make their Test debut off the bench. Ntlabakanye played against the Barbarians in the opening match of the season but will now get his full debut. Mapimpi still going strong: Bok winger edges closer to 50 Tests

The two-time World Cup winner has got one of the best strike rates around, 32 tries in 46 Tests. Willie le Roux might be the man of the moment, with the fullback in line to make his 100th Springbok appearance against Italy in Gqeberha on Saturday, but let's not forget about Makazole Mapimpi, who's something of a survivor in the Bok squad. The 34-year-old will be going all out on Saturday to prove he still has what it takes at the elite level, even if he is no longer the team's first choice left wing. Kurt-Lee Arendse is now the Boks' preferred No 11, with Cheslin Kolbe the standout at No 14, but Mapimpi is still in the mix and will face Italy in the second Test on Saturday. His wing partner will be Edwill van der Merwe, just his second Test, while Le Roux will be at fullback, in his 100th. While there have been discussions about Mapimpi still being an option in 2027 when the Boks challenge for a third World Cup in a row, in Australia, the reality is he is still a first-choice at the Sharks and has never let the Boks down. In fact, in his 46 Tests he has scored 32 tries – a quite phenomenal strike-rate. Kolbe only has 18 tries in his 41 Tests, while Arendse has 19 in 25 Tests. With Canan Moodie hanging around and able to play wing, centre and fullback – on Saturday he'll be in the No 13 jersey – and young Ethan Hooker now also pushing for recognition – on Saturday's he'll be on the bench – Mapimpi knows he needs to make the most of the opportunities that come his way. Going home Especially also with so many quality wingers all across the country, men who aren't even in the current squad. Mapimpi said on Tuesday he wasn't looking too far ahead, and definitely not to the next World Cup, which would be his third, after starring in Japan in 2019 and in France in 2023. 'I can't focus too far ahead. The only thing I can do is focus on the Sharks when I play for them or for the Springboks when I am here … and right now I am very happy to be here at this stage,' said Mapimpi on Tuesday. Playing in Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape where he grew up, is also special for the winger. 'We're all excited to be back here in the Eastern Cape. The last time we were here was in 2021 after Covid. It's rare for the Boks to come here, so there's a lot of excitement all round.'
