Countdown to Kickoff: Chris Tyree is the Saints Player of Day 89
As of today, the New Orleans Saints are 89 days away from their 2025 regular season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Currently wearing No. 89 is a newcomer to the Saints, undrafted rookie wide receiver Chris Tyree. Undrafted rookies typically have low odds to make an NFL roster, but the Saints have historically had good fortune with such players. Here's a closer look at Tyree, our Saints Player of the Day.
Name (age): Chris Tyree
Chris Tyree Hometown: Chester, Va.

Undrafted NFL experience: Rookie
Rookie 2025 salary cap hit: $843,333
Notre Dame won a heavy battle for Tyree, a four-star recruit out of Thomas Dale High School in Virginia. Tyree actually came to the Fighting Irish as a running back and kick returner, where he had over 1,000 all-purpose yards and scored four times as a true freshman in 2020. He averaged 756 all-purpose yards per year between 2021 and 2023. In his four years at Notre Dame, Tyree averaged nearly 300 yards per year returning kicks while scoring 2 touchdowns in that capacity.
By 2023, Tyree's value was more as a receiver than a runner for the Fighting Irish offense. He led Notre Dame with 484 receiving yards in 2023, catching a career-high 26 receptions at 18.6 yards per catch. At the conclusion of the 2023 campaign, Tyree transferred to Virginia to finish off his collegiate career. In his one year with the Cavaliers, Tyree caught 24 passes for 136 yards and added 222 yards on kick returns. During his collegiate career, Tyree consistently ranked among the top kickoff returners among independent programs.
Not selected in this spring's draft, the Saints inked Tyree as an undrafted addition. New Orleans has had outstanding fortune with undrafted wide receivers. Explosive starting wideout Rashid Shaheed is only the latest example, while team Hall of Famer Lance Moore is the most productive example. The Saints also got contributions from undrafted wideouts like Deonte Harris, Marquez Callaway, Brandon Coleman, and Willie Snead in recent history.
Chris Tyree will have his chance to add his name to that list. Tyree has elite explosive traits, getting clocked at a 4.29 in the 40 and posting a 42-inch vertical leap along with impressive shuttle times during postseason workouts. His athleticism is similar to Shaheed, as is are his skills as a kick returner. Both are traits that earned Shaheed a spot on the New Orleans roster.
Remember that Tyree started in college as a running back. This versatility, along with his game-breaking speed, could be a valuable weapon for new Saints coach Kellen Moore and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier. Tyree must quickly overcome his inexperience as a receiver and show he can successfully run an NFL route tree. However, his explosiveness may provide him the opportunity to be the latest New Orleans undrafted gem.

Countdown to Kickoff: Jayden Price is the Saints Player of Day 38
Price is attempting to make the jump from UFL star to a role with the Saints at cornerback The New Orleans Saints are down to a 38-day wait until their regular season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Wearing No. 38 for the Saints in training camp is cornerback Jayden Price, one of the team's newcomers. If he makes the team and keeps his current number, Price will become the 17th player to wear No. 38 for the franchise. Our Saints Player of the Day, here's a closer look at Price's background. At Mulvane High School in Kansas, Price was a quarterback who set school records for career rushing yardage and touchdowns. He'd accept an offer to North Dakota State from there, where he'd star for five years after a redshirt. Over his career with the Bison, Price had 3 interceptions with 17 passes broken up and 3 fumble recoveries. He was also an accomplished punt returner, averaging 14.4 yards per return and scoring 5 touchdowns. Undrafted in 2024, Price would sign with the Atlanta Falcons. He'd be released before the start of the regular season and had a short stint with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL before joining up with the Arlington Renegades of the United Football League. Price was one of the standouts for the Renegades, who were one of the top teams in the UFL. He led the UFL with 13 passes broken up in 10 games. While he didn't record an interception, Price did have a half sack among his 27 total tackles. He was also among the UFL leaders in kickoff and punt return yardage. Jayden Price is now among the contenders to fill out the Saints depth chart at cornerback. He'll have a shot, as New Orleans attempts to fill the departures of Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo, and Shemar Jean-Charles.

CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey? Our staff picks who will start at quarterback for Notre Dame
CJ Carr Season ☘️ Notre Dame football is set to start fall camp today, and the biggest question surrounding the 2025 version of the Fighting Irish is who will be named the starting quarterback. The two main combatants are CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey, with Blake Hebert having a very outside chance at winning the job. It will be a very interesting battle between the two (or three), as head coach Marcus Freeman did not name a starter following spring practices. Notre Dame will now have almost a month to decide who will lead them on the road against Miami, and it's hard to say when the winner will be named. Regardless of that, the staff here at Fighting Irish Wire consisting of Tim Healey, Dave Miller and Michael Chen will still pick who they believe will start against the Hurricanes below. Tim Healey - contributor CJ Carr would be my pick -- he's looked a bit better, to my eye, than Kenny Minchey in the limited action that we, the public, can see. That's not to say I don't think Minchey can be successful -- I think he'd be fine in the role. But I see more potential for a higher ceiling out of Carr, at least to this point. And hey, if the grandson of a legendary Michigan coach can lead Notre Dame to the promised land, that would be icing on the cake. Dave Miller - contributor CJ Carr ➡️ KK Smith 👀 The old adage is if you have two quarterbacks, you have none. I don't necessarily subscribe to that theory, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see both CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey on the field in the season opener at Miami. Minchey, the No. 180 overall recruit in the 2023 ESPN 300, is entering his third season and has played in four games. He threw for 106 yards and rushed for a touchdown in ND's Blue-Gold spring game. Carr, the grandson of former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, threw for 170 yards on 14-of-19 passing with two touchdowns and an interception in the spring showcase. Ultimately, I think Marcus Freeman and his offensive staff will hand the keys over to Carr. He took only four snaps in 2024 and didn't attempt a throw as he recovered from an elbow injury suffered during preseason camp. But the former Elite 11 QB has shown that he has nice touch and is accurate on downfield throws. Whoever is the QB1 will operate behind a very strong line and be surrounded by a deep backfield and a bolstered receiving corps. Either one would be successful, but I think Carr has the higher upside. Michael Chen - site lead CJ Carr finds Elijah Burress for a Blue touchdownThat puts Blue up 32-18 after 6 drives ☘️#GoIrish☘️ | @13Cjcarr | @elijahburress For me, it's about preparing both of them like they will start against Miami, and while it will be only one, both Carr and Minchey have to be ready to take over the offense. You have to believe that Freeman knows this too, which I think is a big reason why he hasn't named his starter. As for the competition, at this point it's about who has the highest floor, the ceiling will get here later with more reps and experience. I think in both cases that guy is Carr. He's got sneaky athleticism, which will play a big part early for the Irish. It's hard to imagine Mike Denbrock calling for a ton of deep balls early, so we might see a lot of dink and dunk from the offense during the first few games considering the opponents. That doesn't mean that Notre Dame won't be able to put up points, but getting Carr's and Minchey's feet wet at the level will go a long way. It's a consensus here at FIW, we all think that Carr will be named the starter. How about you? Drew Brees' former teammate says what we're all thinking about his Hall of Fame candidacy
Drew Brees - 1st ballot New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees is eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the first time in 2026, as he has finally made it five years away from his last playing season by then. Not only every Saints fan, but every ball-knowing NFL fan agrees Brees is a first-ballot Hall of Fame lock; there is nothing to discuss when it comes to the topic; he has done everything you could ask from him, and put together an award list that goes on for about two pages on its own. Super Bowl winner, Super Bowl MVP, two-time OPOY, five-time All-Pro, 13-time Pro Bowler, seven-time NFL passing yards leader, four-time NFL passing touchdowns leader, owns three of the top five single-season completion percentages, Saints Hall of Famer, Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, most career 5,000 yard seasons, most consecutive games with a touchdown pass, 80,358 passing yards, 571 career passing touchdowns, 67.7% career completion rate, and for those who care, a 172-114 career record with a Saints team that lacked competent defensive play for many years. That is less than a quarter of what he did for New Orleans on the field, never mind off it. The only man above Brees in some of the key career passing statistics is Tom Brady, due to his extra 49 starts, who will also be pretty much the strongest lock for first-ballot Hall of Fame induction when he is eligible. But when it comes to efficiency, effectiveness in all scenarios, and just year-by-year dominance no matter who is surrounding him, Brees takes the cake. One of Brees' longtime teammates and fellow Super Bowl XLIV champion, punter Thomas Morstead, made clear his view of the eligibility for Brees, sharing a simple four-word response when discussing the upcoming 2026 class: That is about as simple as it gets, and anyone who played with or against him would likely have the same response when asked. Brees was lethal in every facet of his game, both in his prime and even towards the back-end of his career. While it is a complete injustice that he never received an MVP award, it just simply does not matter towards his eligibility, because the second you look at his numbers and profound impact on the team he played the majority of his career for, it is clear where he belongs.
