London to host 2027 & 2028 Olympic/World trials

The road to Beijing and Los Angeles will run through London.
Athletics Canada has announced that the Forest City will host the 2027 Canadian Track & Field Trials and the 2028 Bell Track & Field Trials.
'Anytime you can bring the best athletes in the country to your backyard, it's exciting, and the Olympic Trials always offers that little extra something because athletes' dreams are on the line,' said London Western TFC Club Manager Scott MacDonald.
The event will run Aug. 9-15 and will serve as the Canadian team selection trials for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing that September.
In 2028, the Bell Track & Field Trials will run from June 14 to 18 and will help determine the athletes competing for Canada in Track & Field at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Among the long list of elite athletes from London who have represented Canada on the world stage are Olympic champion Damian Warner, Olympic bronze medallist Alysha Newman, Pan American Games champion Jessica Zelinka, and Parapan American Games champion Kevin Strybosch.

Canadian sprint canoeist Katie Vincent sets world record in women's C1 500m
Canadian sprint canoeist Katie Vincent set a world record in the women's C1 500-metre event on Sunday at the national trials in Montreal. The 29-year-old Olympic champion clocked a time of two minutes 0.609 seconds in the final at the Olympic Basin, breaking the previous mark of 2:00.73 set by Alena Nazdrova of Belarus at the 2019 world championships in Szeged, Hungary. 2022 world silver medallist Sophia Jensen of Chelsea, Que., finished one spot behind Vincent in 2:03.159. Vincent, who hails from Mississauga, Ont., became the first-ever Canadian woman to capture Olympic gold in the sport last summer in Paris by winning the C1 200m race — the lone individual women's canoe sprint event at the Games. The two-time Olympian won bronze medals in Tokyo and Paris in the C2 500m event.

Saskatoon born Roger McQueen, drafted to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday, is getting some traction from fans thanks to his shared namesake with the lead character in Disney-Pixar's 'Cars.' (Source: The hockey team once owned by Disney is quickly embracing the name recognition of its latest first round prospect, Saskatoon born forward Roger McQueen. The Anaheim Ducks drafted Roger McQueen tenth overall at the NHL Draft on Friday, the team taking him directly from the draft day stage to a helicopter to Disneyland, a ten-minute drive from the arena where the Ducks play. That's where he was introduced to Lightning McQueen, the star of the Disney-Pixar 'Cars' movie franchise, who he happens to share a name with. It was a match made in marketing heaven. McQueen was asked about the shared name — and his decision to walk up to the draft stage to Rascall Flatt's cover of 'Life is a Highway,' a song straight from the movie's soundtrack. 'It's pretty fun. Picking the song, I thought I'd just throw something fun in there,' McQueen said. Another Disney connection — McQueen's pick was announced by two actors from the Disney franchise that the Ducks name comes from — the Mighty Ducks. The connection was taken even further Sunday, when the Ducks revealed McQueen would wear the same number as the fictional race car that shares his namesake: number 95. Outside of marketing-fuelled antics that will likely result in a number of Disney-Pixar fans buying Ducks merchandise — McQueen will have his work cut out for him if he hopes to be a rookie sensation like Lightning. McQueen only played in 17 games last year for the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings, recovering from a fracture in his lower back. Despite all his time missed, the 6'5' forward still scored 10 goals and picked up 10 assists as a member of the Wheat Kings last season. The previous year, he played in 53 games with 51 points on the season. Along with Disneyland and dolphin watching, the Ducks have been keeping their new prospects busy since draft day. McQueen was joined by two of his new teammates in throwing out the first pitch at a Los Angeles Angels game, wearing his new jersey number out for the occasion.
