Karnataka gears up to put pressure on Centre to issue notification on Krishna Water Dispute Tribunal-II award

The Hindu03-05-2025
As the crucial meeting of irrigation Ministers of the four States that make up the Krishna river basin comprising Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana has been scheduled for May 7 in New Delhi, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah chaired a high-level meeting on Saturday to finalise the State's stand on the matter and urge the Centre to issue a gazette notification on the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II award to ensure protection of the State' share of water.
Union Minister for Jal Shakti C.R. Patil has convened the meeting to discuss the award made by the KWDT-II. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who also holds the Major and Medium Irrigation portfolio, and a battery of officials, would represent Karnataka.
The tribunal, led by Brijesh Kumar, which started its proceedings in July 2007, submitted its draft verdict on December 31, 2010, and the final verdict on November 29, 2013.
The KWDT-II allocated 73 tmcft of water to Karnataka, of which 130 tmcft has been allocated for the Upper Krishna Project-III (UKP-III).
All-party meeting
Mr. Siddaramaiah has instructed officials to make all arrangements to safeguard the State's interests and secure the share of water. After the meeting on May 7, the Chief Minister has decided to hold an all-party meeting to discuss the implementation of the award of the KWDT-II.
Mr. Shivakumar told reporters that the State government had submitted petitions to the Centre in the past and urged it to issue the gazette notification on the tribunal's award. Despite several pleas by the State, the governments at the Centre had not notified the award for the last 15 years.
The Chief Minister said farmers of the UKP-III phase area have been waiting for several years to irrigate their farmlands by utilising the water share under the tribunal award.
The Supreme Court has permitted the issue of a gazette notification when petitions regarding the allocation of water by the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal Award were pending before it. Similarly, the Jal Shakthi Ministry issued a notification on the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal on February 20, 2020. Though Andhra Pradesh and Telangana filed petitions before the Supreme Court, after the bifurcation of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, the Centre would be urged to issue a notification on the KWDT-II award, the Chief Minister said.
Height of Almatti
Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil told reporters that legislators of north Karnataka have urged Mr. Siddaramaiah to take steps to increase the height of the Alamatti dam from 519 m to 524.256 m to store more water, as there was no objection to raising the dam height.
Mr. Patil said since the KWDT-II was not notified, the water is not flowing in the UKP-III canals, which were developed spending ₹16,000 crore.
Ministers, including M.B. Patil, R.B. Thimmapur, Sharanapagouda Darshanapur, H.C. Mahadevappa, and Shivanand S. Patil, and Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, and advocate Mohan Katarki attended the meeting.

Meta apologises for inaccurate Kannada translation

Social media major Meta recently apologised for inaccurate Kannada translation and claimed to have fixed the issue, after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah raised concerns over faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on its platforms. Raising concerns over the faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on Meta platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, Siddaramaiah said that it was leading to the distortion of facts and misleading users. "We fixed an issue that briefly caused this inaccurate Kannada translation. We apologize that this happened," a Meta spokesperson said. Siddaramaiah said social media platforms must act responsibly, especially when dealing with official communication, and cautioned citizens to be aware that translations displayed on these platforms are often inaccurate. "Faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on Meta platforms is distorting facts and misleading users. This is especially dangerous when it comes to official communication. My media advisor has formally written to Meta urging immediate correction," Siddaramaiah posted on 'X'. "Social media platforms must act responsibly. I caution citizens to be aware that translations shown are often inaccurate. Such negligence by tech giants can harm public understanding and trust," he added. In an email sent to Meta on July 16, the chief minister's media advisor, K V Prabhakar, raised serious concerns on behalf of the CM regarding the automatic translation of Kannada content on Facebook and Instagram. The Karnataka government has asked Meta to temporarily suspend the auto-translation feature for Kannada content until translation accuracy is reliably improved. Machine translations are shown to users in various instances on Facebook and Instagram, including public biographical info and specific pieces of content. In the case of Kannada auto-translation, Meta's AI machine translation model provided a machine translation error which caused inaccurate Kannada translations in Facebook-- which the company claims to have been fixed now.

J&K CM, family urge Centre's help as Niger terrorists abduct Ramban man

J&K CM Omar Abdullah (File photo) JAMMU: J&K CM Omar Abdullah urged Sunday the external affairs ministry (MEA) to intervene urgently in securing the release of Ranjeet Singh, a resident of Ramban district, who was allegedly abducted by terrorists in Niger following an attack on July 15. Abdullah tagged external affairs minister S Jaishankar on X and called for Centre's intervention. Singh, employed as a senior safety officer with M/s Transrail Lighting Limited — a power transmission and distribution firm in Niger — lost contact with his family on July 15, the day terrorists struck the Dosso region, reportedly killing two Indian workers. His wife Sheela Devi, speaking from the family's remote village of Chakka Kundi in Ramban, said she learned about the abduction from one of her husband's friends in Niger after receiving vague responses from his company. 'I kept calling the company, but they said there was no network at the site. No mention of anything serious,' said the mother of three young children. Ranjeet's father Mohan Lal said: 'He was supposed to return in a month or two. We request the PM to help us. He has three small children,' Lal said. Social media users have amplified the family's appeal.
