Peugeot to revive GTi badge with 208 hot hatch on 13 April
The brand has confirmed that its long-mooted Alpine A290 rival, officially confirmed by Peugeot boss Alain Favey earlier this year, will be unwrapped on 13 June. It has given no details, but says it will be 'fun to drive, agile, powerful – built to deliver an unforgettable driving experience'.
It will be the first GTi model since the previous-generation Peugeot 308 went off sale in 2021 and Peugeot's first sporty pure-electric car.
Speaking to media recently, Favey said: 'I'm in a position to confirm that we will reintroduce the GTi on the e-208 as soon as possible. We've made the decision that Peugeot GTi will be reintroduced.'
He added that it is a 'signal' about 'what it means to reconnect to our past, our history' and that it would link the French brand's road cars to its involvement in motorsport – particularly the World Endurance Championship, in which it fields the 9X8 hypercar.
'We want to continue to nurture the reputation of the brand for driving sensations and the fact that our cars produce particular driving sensations, either as a driver or as someone that is being driven in the car,' Favey said.
As for a broader GTi line-up or a sporting model with a combustion engine, Favey suggested it will depend on customer feedback.
He said: 'We will start with the 208 and [are] definitely listening to your inputs, or what our customers will say as well.
'We don't exclude that there might be other executions of the 208 GTi under the GTi badge, but for today there's absolutely nothing planned in that sense.'
Confirmation of the GTi badge's return comes after Favey said that he would consider it as one of his first jobs since taking over as Peugeot CEO in February.

The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles and E-ZPass Delaware are offering the free devices to anyone who opens a new individual E-ZPass Delaware account between Aug. 1 and Aug. 31, 2025. To help drivers estimate costs more accurately, the Delaware Department of Transportation will update its online toll calculator on Aug. 1. Beginning Aug. 1, new rates will apply to I-95 in Newark, the US 301 Mainline and State Route 1 at Biddles Corner and Dover. On I-95 in Newark, the toll for two-axle vehicles will rise from $4.00 to $5.00 for both cash and E-ZPass users. At US 301 Mainline, the toll for two-axle E-ZPass users will increase from $4.00 to $5.00, while toll-by-plate customers will pay $7.00, up from $5.60. Toll amounts for interchanges along US 301 will vary. Drivers on SR 1 at Biddles Corner and Dover will see the following changes: Delaware E-ZPass holders: Weekday toll: $1.50 (two-axle vehicles) Weekend toll: $4.00 Cash and non-Delaware E-ZPass users: Weekday toll: $2.50 Weekend toll: $6.00 Can I use my Delaware E-ZPass outside of the state? Motor rally accident kills three spectators in France
Three spectators died in central France on Saturday after a car driven by a 22-year-old woman racer veered off the road during an auto rally, authorities said. The driver of the modified Peugeot 208 that hit the spectators and her 51-year-old woman co-driver were taken to hospital but without life-threatening injuries, prosecutors said. Two men died at the scene and prosecutors later announced that a third man, airlifted to hospital, succumbed to his injuries. The three killed were two brothers, aged 70 and 60, and a 44-year-old man, according to the public prosecutor's office, which opened an investigation. Several people who witnessed the accident near the town of Ambert in central France were in shock, a local official told AFP. In total, a dozen people were taken to a psychological support unit set up in the nearby village of Saint-Just. The accident occurred around 11 am (0900 GMT) on Saturday. "This is a tragedy for the world of racing," said Joel Mathurin, the local prefect, or top government official for the area. Regional prosecutor Laure Moisset said the accident was "very violent". In a short statement, the rally organisers said that the race was halted at 10:49 am. All spectators were asked to leave the scene and the event's award ceremony was cancelled. Dozens of firefighters and police were dispatched to the scene. The investigation was "in its early stages," the prosecutor said. The Peugeot 208 car was to be examined. The road where the accident took place, almost a straight line according to authorities, has been closed. Prosecutors said they would have to determine whether the spectators were in an authorised area during the rally. "I prefer to remain cautious," Moisset told reporters. "It is still a little too early to be precise," she added. Organised since 1965, the motor rally attracted 167 teams for its 32nd edition.
