Oman strengthens food security through model farm programme
As part of the program, over 9,000 tissue-cultured date palm saplings and 6,000 high-quality fruit tree seedlings have been distributed to farmers across the governorate, covering more than 140 acres of cultivated land. The initiative supports economic-scale farms in all three wilayats of Al Dhahirah, helping them adopt modern irrigation systems and apply advanced agricultural practices.
The program aims to improve productivity, raise the quality of local produce, and increase farmers' income through the cultivation of carefully selected fruit varieties, including mango, Eureka lemon, Omani lime, guava, fig, and grapes. It also encourages a shift toward water-efficient farming methods by requiring the installation of modern irrigation systems as a condition for support.
According to the General Directorate of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah, the model farms serve as living examples of what sustainable and profitable agriculture can look like when guided by structured planning, smart technology, and continuous field support.
The ministry works closely with farmers to provide technical guidance, regular follow-ups, and field inspections. This hands-on approach ensures that farms not only meet production targets but also operate efficiently and sustainably in the long term.
Though currently focused on Al Dhahirah, the program extends to other governorates as part of Oman's broader agricultural development strategy. Officials emphasize that the ultimate goal is to enhance food security, reduce reliance on imports, and equip local farmers with the tools needed to compete in a modern agricultural landscape.
By integrating best practices with practical support, the Model Fields Program is reshaping the farming sector—field by field—toward a more resilient, productive, and food-secure Oman.

Officials confirmed that the project will be implemented under a corporate investment system in partnership with private sector entities. A joint technical team has been formed comprising governorate and ministry officials to assess rainwater harvesting and terrace rehabilitation projects. The objective, according to officials, is to improve water resource efficiency and preserve the traditional mountain farming heritage. Following the meeting, the governor conducted a site visit to review ongoing agricultural efforts across the wilayat.

Oman, China explore deeper ties at Salalah forum
Salalah – The third Omani-Chinese Friendship Forum was held in Salalah last week focusing on strengthening strategic partnership and expanding avenues of cooperation and investment between Oman and China. Organised under the theme 'Chinese Modernisation and Oman Vision 2040: Our Work and Proposals', the forum was a joint initiative of Al Roya newspaper, the Chinese Embassy in Oman and the Oman-China Friendship Association. It brought together officials, experts and specialists from both countries. H H Sayyid Marwan bin Turki al Said, Governor of Dhofar, inaugurated the forum and felicitated participants and speakers. H E Dr Saleh Said Masan, Undersecretary for Commerce and Industry at Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, described the forum as a 'unique opportunity to exchange expertise and explore promising investment areas that serve the development priorities of both countries.' H E Lyu Jian, Ambassador of China to Oman, said relations between the two countries have remained strong for over 1,200 years, with diplomatic ties formally established in 1978. 'Our cooperation has been stable and fruitful, built on mutual respect and equality.' He added that China is Oman's top trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching US$36.7bn in 2024. China is also among the top five foreign investors in Oman. 'Our collaboration includes the launch of the first Omani satellite, joint energy investments and training programmes that have benefited over 1,200 Omanis.' The ambassador noted that trade between China and the GCC reached US$288bn in 2024, with Chinese investments increasing by more than 30% in the first half of 2025. He called for more cultural cooperation and the introduction of direct flights between Oman and China. Dr Khalid Salim al Saidi, Chairman of Oman-China Friendship Association, said it plays a 'vital role in strengthening ties beyond formal meetings'. He added that its work now includes building cultural bridges and informal cooperation initiatives based on mutual values. Naif Hamed Fadhil, Head of the Dhofar branch of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the forum is 'important for bringing business owners closer and enabling bilateral investment in energy, technology, industry, logistics and tourism'. He called for the development of sustainable and impactful cooperation models. The forum featured discussions on four core themes: Chinese Modernisation and Oman Vision 2040, Energy Sector Cooperation, Innovation and Technology Partnerships, and Cultural and Humanitarian Exchange. It also included a photo exhibition in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy and B2B meetings between companies from the two countries. More than 30 representatives from Omani and Chinese firms took part, with a dedicated exhibition showcasing Chinese businesses. The forum aimed to reinforce strategic ties and explore new collaboration areas aligned with Oman's development priorities, while drawing from China's experience in economic and social modernisation.

Omani doctor's tech firm joins forces with US healthcare giant
Muscat – An Omani doctor's tech venture, born from the chaos of overburdened hospital wards in the UK's National Health Service (NHS), has joined forces with one of the largest healthcare staffing firms in the United States. Aya Healthcare, based in San Diego, has acquired Locum's Nest, a British company that connects NHS hospitals with healthcare professionals through a mobile app. The platform helps fill staffing gaps more efficiently and has already saved the NHS over £750mn since its launch in 2016. The company was co-founded by Dr Ahmed Shahrabani and Dr Nicholas Andreou, both NHS physicians at the time. Dr Shahrabani, who was born in Muscat and studied at the British School in Madinat Qaboos, told Muscat Daily that the idea for Locum's Nest came from witnessing daily inefficiencies in the hospital system. 'As a junior doctor, I saw time lost to rota gaps being filled through last-minute phone calls and emails. It was not safe and not sustainable,' he said. 'We created Locum's Nest to fix that – to give doctors and nurses more time, clarity and control so they can focus on their patients.' Following the acquisition by Aya Healthcare, Locum's Nest plans to expand its reach nationwide with Dr Shahrabani continuing as CEO. 'Our mission is not changing – it's accelerating,' he said. 'This partnership gives us the infrastructure to scale while staying true to our core: empowering clinicians and improving patient care.' Though the platform will continue to operate under the Locum's Nest brand, the acquisition aligns two leading healthcare staffing innovators on either side of the Atlantic. Aya Healthcare is the largest healthcare talent software and staffing company in the US, known for building flexible, tech-driven solutions for hospitals and health systems. Dr Shahrabani, who still practises medicine in North Central London, believes Omani youth can learn from his journey. 'My advice is simple: go for it. Start building and learning now. Oman has immense potential, especially in healthcare,' he said. 'The infrastructure is there. With the right mindset and innovation from within, Oman can become a regional hub.' He also expressed pride in his Omani roots, describing his school days in Muscat as formative. 'Those were some of the happiest years of my life. That foundation shaped who I am today.' Outside of medicine and business, Dr Shahrabani is a semi-professional race car driver in a British national championship, a tennis player and an off-roading enthusiast. 'Entrepreneurship is a lot like medicine – what sets you apart is how you connect with people,' he said. 'Communication, empathy and building relationships matter more than any textbook.' He welcomed aspiring entrepreneurs from Oman to reach out to him on LinkedIn, adding, 'I'd be honoured to support the next generation in any way I can.'
