Lyles and Bednarek involved in heated episode; Olympic champion says best timing yet to come
Lyles, the reigning Olympic 100m champion, will attempt to defend both his 100m and 200m world crowns in Japan, aiming to emulate Usain Bolt with a fourth consecutive world 200m gold.
The 28-year-old from Florida warmed up for that challenge in Eugene on Sunday by clocking a world-leading 19.63 seconds in a testy battle with Kenny Bednarek.
Lyles angered Bednarek by turning his head to stare down his rival just before he took the tape. Bednarek shoved Lyles in the back over that apparent taunt.
Lyles refused to comment about the flashpoint after his win. 'Under the coach's orders, no comment,' Lyles said before brushing off further attempts to talk about the spat.
Bednarek, though, was more expansive.
'That's unsportsmanlike sh*t, and I don't deal with that. I don't deal with any of that stuff. It's not good character,' Bednarek said.
'The summary is, don't do that to me. I don't do any of that stuff. It's not good character right there. That's pretty much it. At the end of the day, he won the race. I've got to give him props. He was the better man today. What he said didn't matter, it's just what he did,' Bednarek added.
The feud sets up the possibility of an intriguing rivalry over the remaining months of the season between the two US sprinters.
While both men are planning to run in Europe ahead of the World Championships, they will almost certainly duel again in Tokyo.
'I can beat him'
Lyles, who has endured a patchy season disrupted by niggling ankle and groin injuries, believes that his best is yet to come and that Sunday's win augurs well for his world championship hopes.
'If they ain't gonna beat me now, they ain't gonna beat me ever,' Lyles said.
'I'm seeing everything I need to see in practice, so I'm truly just waiting for it to transfer over. My coach and I say that when you see something happen in practice, it takes about three weeks to see it on the track in a race.
'And it's still not even close to what we've seen in practice — we're still far behind.
'I'm trying to get as many races in as possible. You know, as you can all see, I'm underdeveloped in terms of races. So I just need to keep getting sharp. So I need to keep putting myself in more and more competitions.'
Bednarek, meanwhile, plans to be lying in wait for Lyles in Tokyo.
The 26-year-old from Tulsa has three silver medals in the 200m at major championships, but is so far waiting for his breakthrough gold.
'Next time we line up, I'm gonna win,' Bednarek said. 'That's all that matters to me.'
Bednarek noted, too, that while Lyles had run only three races in Eugene — scratching from the 100m after his opening heat — he had raced all five rounds of the 100m and 200m.
'I've said it for years, Noah's gonna be Noah. If he wants to stare me down, that's fine,' Bednarek said. 'But I ran five rounds, and he was fresh. We can line up again when we're both fresh, and let's see what happens -- because I'm very confident I can beat him.'

Aman Sehrawat, Sujeet Kalkal Make The Cut For World Wrestling Championships
Last Updated: Aman Sehrawat and Sujeet Kalkal have secured their spots in the India squad for the upcoming World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb. Paris Olympic bronze medalist Aman Sehrawat faced minimal resistance in the World Championships selection trials, while Sujeet Kalkal showcased impressive counter-attacking skills to secure his place in the national team for the men's freestyle 65kg weight category in Lucknow on Monday. Next month's World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, will be Sehrawat's second international event since he won bronze in the French capital in 2024. The 22-year-old Sehrawat earned bronze at the Mongolia Ranking Series event in June, marking his return to competitive wrestling. On Monday, he appeared sharper than he did in Mongolia. In his opening bout against Sumit, the only points Sehrawat conceded were push-out points, as his double-leg attacks dominated the match. He won by technical superiority within the first period. The final against Rahul was also one-sided, with Sehrawat winning by technical superiority without conceding a point. Sehrawat had Rahul in a head-lock position early on, scoring a push-out point. A right leg-attack led to a two-point takedown. Sehrawat moved swiftly on the court, executing clear moves that prevented Rahul from mounting any offense, and finished the final with authority. 'I feel I am back to my best. My fitness is good and my rhythm is also back. I am ready for World Championships," Sehrawat told news agency PTI. 'I understand that I made a few mistakes in the Mongolia Ranking Series, but that was my first competition after a year. I feel I didn't do that bad, I was even leading 11-6, but I will take that defeat in my stride," he said. Aman has not yet won a senior World Championship medal. He has won medals at the 2022 Asian Games (bronze) and the 2023 Asian Championship (gold). The men's freestyle 65kg competition was intense, with Sujeet Kalkal emerging victorious. The youngster from Charkhi Dadri showed remarkable improvement from his performance a year ago. His solid defense against both Anuj (10-0) and Vishal Kaliraman (8-4) was noteworthy, as he turned adverse positions into point-scoring opportunities with impressive counter-attacking moves. There has been a void in the men's 65kg class since star wrestler Bajrang Punia ceased competing in the category, and Kalkal is gradually making this weight class his own. His mat movement and speed have improved significantly. 'We have worked on his strength over the past year. With age, he has gained power as well. He had an ankle injury some time back and used the time to improve his strength," said his father and coach, Dayanand Kalkal. 'His defense was already good; we needed to work on his attack, which was a bit loose, I would say. It has improved," he added. 'His resistance power has also improved. It will only get better," remarked coach Kuldeep Sehrawat, who also trained him at his akhada in Sonepat. Deepak Punia, who has moved to 92kg after competing in 86kg at the Tokyo Olympics, also secured his place in the national team with dominant wins. The 'ketli pehalwan' needed only 73 seconds to defeat Manjeet (SSCB) before prevailing over Haryana's Sachin. Mukul Dahiya, who qualified for the U20 World Championships, also made the senior squad in the 86kg category. His victories over Sachin Jaglan (technical superiority) and Ashish (7-2) demonstrated his potential as a future prospect for India. Haryana's Amit, who trains at the Army Sports Institute in Pune, also made an impression. His fast-paced moves and remarkable mat movement earned him a place in the Indian team in the 79kg category. His four-pointers against Parvinder were a delight to watch. Despite suffering a knee injury in the final against Services' Chander Mohan, Amit prevailed 9-6. Surprisingly, Chander Mohan did not attack much despite seeing his rival struggling after twisting his left knee. The 74kg category was a single-bout affair with only two entries received. Jaideep secured his place with a 12-6 win despite suffering a severe knee injury. Rohit, who previously competed in 65kg, secured his place in the 70kg category by defeating Sidharth (6-2) and Sagar (6-1). He received a walkover from Ashwani. Talented wrestlers Udit (61kg), Vickey (97kg), and Rajat (125kg) also made the freestyle squad. 'Sujeet beat Russian and Kazakhstan wrestlers in Hungary. He has progressed rapidly. He navigates tricky bouts like Sushil used to. He will be an Olympic medal contender," said India coach Vinod Kumar. 'Udit is also emerging fast. He has transitioned well from juniors to senior level. He is young and does not get intimidated by big names. In the coming years, he will also be a great prospect for India," he added. TG athletes can gain from new sports policy
If Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has his say and goes all-out to implement his ambitious sports agenda, then the State, and its capital city in particular, will boast of world-class sports infrastructure across disciplines in the next couple of years. On the face of it, this is a praiseworthy effort as the bane of the Indian political apparatus has been the insipid promotion of sports, baring a select few. Budgetary allocations for sports have never been inspirational. In fact, the neglect is such that some allocations have been reduced here and there. The ambitiously carved out 32-page sports policy unveiled by Revanth Reddy the other day makes for a wonderful reading as he promises everything under the moon to realise his dream of making the state the hub of international sports. The comprehensive vision lays stress on strengthening governance, boosting infrastructure, and ushering in a breathtaking sports ecosystem that would result in the emergence of medal-winning athletes. There is no doubt that once he goes about the implementation process and enhances budgetary allocations, there would be smiles on the faces of countless sportspersons, coaches and the support staff. Over a period, Telangana can indeed be the envy of the nation going by the manner it brings about the best of infrastructure and sports avenues, including supporting budding talent coming from the poorer strata. Alas, carried away by the moment, Reddy revealed the politician in him when he spoke rather exaggeratedly that Hyderabad would be fit enough to host some Olympic disciplines by 2036. This is too ambitious a remark given that preparing grounds and facilities and putting in place infrastructure of an extraordinary kind for the mega event is no child's play. What the city has, as of now, is not sound enough to host even a fraction of the events that feature in Olympics. He should take cue from his political mentor N Chandrababu Naidu, who, in his effort to provide the best of facilities for the 2002 National Games, came up with the finest stadiums and playing surfaces. Budget was no problem. J Jayalalithaa constructed the magnificent JN stadium in nine months. Can Revanth Reddy emulate these records? The fact is that the stadiums constructed by Naidu like GMC Balayogi athletics stadium, KVBR stadium, tennis complex and the velodrome are all outdated as the wear and tear must have worn them out. They need to be refurbished before the city is good enough to host the National Games two years down the line, towards which Reddy is to approach the Indian Olympic Association. However, realising the herculean task that lies up ahead, the Chief Minister has played his masterstroke-a Public Private Participation (PPP). This will go a long way in helping him realise the dream of nurturing Olympic gold medallists and world champions across disciplines. Adding to this is the smart move to constitute a 14-member Board of Governors to oversee handling of the Telangana Sports Development Fund (TSDF). Featuring some big names from the world of sports and industry, including Kapil Dev, Abhinav Bindra, Pullela Gopichand and Bhaichung Bhutia, it will be headed by industrialist Sanjeev Goenka, which ensures transparent and accountable utilisation of resources that will be raised through the PPP mode. A good beginning has been made as the state was able to sign MoUs with many keen investors and sponsors. This can help promote exchange programmes with other nations and invest in proven international coaches. Hopefully, this will mark the beginning of rewarding days for sportspersons from Telangana.
