Gunfight erupts in J&K's Kishtwar; Jaish terrorists believed trapped
'A joint team of security forces, including the Army, J&K Police, and CRPF, launched a search operation in Kuchal (Chatroo), acting on intelligence inputs about the movement of terrorists in the area. As the forces neared the suspected hideout, holed-up terrorists opened fire at the search party, triggering an encounter,' said an official source.
Additional reinforcements were rushed to the site of the firefight to strengthen the cordon and plug possible escape routes, said an official.
'Operations are in progress,' Army's Nagrota-based White Knight Corps stated in an X post.

Begumpet resident loses over ₹3.5 lakh in Telegram task scam
A 27-year-old resident of Begumpet was defrauded of more than ₹3.5 lakh in a Telegram-based scam in which cyber fraudsters posed as representatives of Goibibo's promotions department, luring the victim with promises of quick commissions through task-based hotel ratings. The scam unfolded when the victim received a message on Telegram app and a follow-up WhatsApp call from individuals claiming to represent 'Goibibo India Promotions'. They introduced a scheme that allegedly paid users for rating hotels through links shared via Telegram. After completing a few tasks, the victim received small commissions, ₹970 initially, followed by ₹17,109 seemingly credited as a reward for participation. The timely payments created an illusion of legitimacy and encouraged further engagement. On June 22, the victim was added to a Telegram group, populated with other 'participants' who shared screenshots of large payouts. Convinced by this along with the assurance of quick profits, the victim invested ₹1 lakh into the scheme. The fraudsters then directed the victim to a manipulated website that showed a negative balance in the account wallet, pressuring him to 'recharge' funds in order to continue earning and recover the supposed losses. Under this pretext, the victim transferred ₹88,027 and ₹1 lakh on the same day, followed by another ₹1,69,882 on June 23. As the fake website showed an increasingly alarming deficit, reaching ₹5 lakh, the scammers attempted to extort more money by dangling the prospect of a ₹14–15 lakh return. It was only at this point that the victim realised the operation was fraudulent and reported the matter by dialling the national cybercrime helpline, 1930. A case has been booked by the Cybercrime Wing of the Hyderabad Police and an investigation is underway.

Centre asks Assam govt to take action against officer over illegal forest land use
Guwahati: The union ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC) has directed the Assam government to take action against a senior state official for allegedly allowing illegal construction inside a reserve forest in Hailakandi district, in violation of provisions under the Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Adhiniyam, 1980. Yadava had approved the construction of the second commando battalion of Assam Police in October 2021. (HT File Photo) MK Yadava, who was the principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF), head of forest force (HoFF), and special chief secretary (forests) of the Assam government, was accused of permitting the diversion of 11.5 hectares of land inside Damchera Inner Line Reserve Forest in Assam for the construction of a commando battalion, without obtaining prior permission from the Centre. Yadava had approved the construction of the second commando battalion of Assam Police in October 2021. The Shillong-based regional office of MoEFCC issued a letter to the Assam government on May 25 stating, 'MK Yadava, the then PCCF and HoFF, Assam, had no authority to grant permission for clearing the forest land for non-forest activity without the prior permission of central government.' Directing the state government to submit a report on action taken regarding litigations pending before the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the letter further stated, 'Government of Assam is hereby authorised to take legal action against the offender and furnish an action taken a period of 45 days.' The letter, written by Deputy Inspector General of Forests (Central) Pee Lee Ete, noted that the diversion was allowed without prior approval, and 'for conservation and protection of not legally tenable.' HT has seen a copy of the letter. The letter explained that while the Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Adhiniyam permits the construction of bare minimum operational buildings for forest management—such as check gates, single-lane untarred roads, and huts for guards—without prior permission from the Centre, approval is required for large structures that could impact conservation. A MoEFCC team that inspected the area found that construction was ongoing in full swing, with permanent structures covering a plinth area of around 30,000 square metres being built over 11.5 hectares, the letter said. Officials from the Assam Police Housing Corporation informed the team that around 50% of construction for some of the proposed battalion buildings had already been completed. 'The activities amount to gross violation of the Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Adhiniyam and rules, guidelines and notifications framed thereunder, and it is also against the legal principles framed by the courts and tribunals,' the letter read. The Assam government has not taken any action against Yadava so far, and the 45-day deadline given by MoEFCC to take action and submit a report will expire on July 13, an official requesting anonymity said. The letter also noted that the offence is punishable under Sections 3A and 3B of the Van (Sanrakshan and Samvardhan) Adhiniyam, 1980, read with Rule 15(3) of the Van (Sanrakshan and Samvardhan) Rules, 2023. Violation of the Act can result in imprisonment for a maximum period of 15 days.

RJD MP demands CBI probe into murder of party worker near Buxar power plant
Buxar: RJD MP from Buxar, Sudhakar Singh, wrote a detailed letter to CBI director Praveen Sood on Thursday, demanding a high-level probe into the alleged corruption in a tender issued by SJVN Limited thermal power plant in Chausa, and a related murder. In the letter, Singh stated that on May 26, Arjun Yadav, district president of the RJD labour cell, and a local contractor, was murdered at the main gate of the Chausa power plant. According to a press briefing by the Buxar superintendent of police, held on June 21, the accused caught in the case confessed that the murder was linked to a coal tender dispute and that Yadav was exerting political pressure for its cancellation. In the letter, Singh mentioned that he had submitted formal complaints to Union power minister Manohar Lal Khattar on March 18 and April 3, alleging serious irregularities in a tender issued on Feb 10. Acting upon his complaints, the CBI had initiated an investigation, which ultimately led to the cancellation of the tender, and a fresh one was floated on May 29. Singh hailed the development as a moral victory in the fight against corruption, however, alleging that it came at a grave cost, that is murder of Yadav. When contacted, SJVNL cheif executive officer Vikas Sharma said he was not aware of the matter. "The MP is entitled to express his views and make any allegations he deems appropriate," he told this reporter without refuting the accusations. In the letter, Singh suggested a deeper conspiracy, potentially involving a Kolkata-based group previously flagged in his complaints. The MP alleged that this group is still active within the SJVN Buxar plant and may have orchestrated the murder to silence dissent and suppress evidence of wrongdoing. He urged the govts of India and Bihar, and CBI to conduct an impartial and high-level investigation into the murder of Yadav, launch a special probe into the role of SJVN officials and the alleged Kolkata-based syndicate, and ensure strict action against all those found guilty of corruption or conspiracy.
