Horror moment meat cleaver wielding thug launches attack on terrified shop staff
The thug was seen waiting outside for half-an-hour plotting his attack before barging through the shop door, terrifying staff, and stealing £2,000 from the till with police launching an investigation
A terrified shopkeeper was in tears when a thug wielding a meat cleaver burst into a corner shop and demanded money from the till. Police have since launched a probe into the horrifying incident after £2,000 was stolen from the Premier Bathville store in Armadale, West Lothian, Scotland, at around 8.15pm on Thursday.
Shop owner, Abdul Manan, 27, told how the balaclava-wearing brute was seen in CCTV waiting at a bus stop near the shop for half an hour as he planned his sinister attack. He then barged through the door, holding the blade in above his head, as he pushed a member of staff and demanded he open the till.
Abdul said: "It was my staff member Atta that was on when it happened. He was terrified. He phoned me straight away and just started crying apologising to me, saying he should have stopped him.
"I told him, don't worry. He did the right thing. All I wanted to know was that he was okay. We don't want somebody getting hurt just for some money. That's not going to happen. He is still very shaken up, though."
In CCTV footage captured in the shop, the thug can be seen with his face covered by a black balaclava and wearing a grey and black tracksuit top, with grey joggers and grey Adidas trainers.
He is shown entering the store with the large meat cleaver and pushing Atta - who was tidying up newspapers at the time - against a shelf of vapes.
The thug then threatens the terrified worker, directing the meat cleaver towards him and forcing him to open the till. Brave Atta can be seen calmly standing at the side of the robber before he makes off with nearly £2,000 in cash.
Abdul told the Daily Record: "The police came out within five minutes and forensic officers were here until 2am checking for fingerprints and DNA.
"It's quite disgusting. It was a very big meat cleaver he had. I've seen kitchen knives before but never this.
"We are working hard and times are tough as it is - but for things like this to happen, it's devastating."
Abdul says the shop will be hit hard by the robbery and the till will now be emptied every half an hour.
He added: "I don't think there is any chance we will get this money back. Even if they catch the guy, I don't think we will get it back.
"It will affect us. We were running short as it was but we will just need to work it out.
"These guys just think they can get away with it - that's why they keep doing it.
"I just hope the police catch him now so he can't target anyone else."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Police received a report of a robbery at a premises on Lower Bathville in Armadale around 8.20pm on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
'A man threatened staff with a weapon before stealing approximately £2,000 in cash and running off. No-one was injured.
'Officers attended and enquiries are ongoing to trace the man.'

Five children have been taken to hospital, including two with serious injuries, after a tree fell in a seaside park in Essex on Saturday. Essex police said they were called to Chalkwell park in Southend-on-Sea shortly before 3pm, where they found 'a number of casualties'. An East of England ambulance service spokesperson said: 'Two children were transported by road to Southend University hospital. 'A further three children were later transported by road to the same hospital with minor injuries.' Police advised the public to avoid the area. Daniel Cowan, the leader of Southend's city council, said on Saturday: 'I'm aware of this very serious incident. We're working with Essex police, the ambulance service and fire service, who are still at the scene. 'I do understand that a tree has fallen, there's a number of casualties and we're just asking the public to avoid the area while those services carry out their work, and my thoughts are with those affected.'

The new photographs reveal the watery grave of the tragic entrepreneur's yacht. A ruined reception area holds soaked furniture scattered across one side of the dilapidated room. Waterlogged armchairs and pillows thrown all over the eerie compartment sit next to ghastly tables which have been soaked under water for the last 10 months. The once sumptuous interior now rotten with grime is a harrowing reminder of the tragic day on August 19 2024 when the ship sank in just 16 minutes after being hit by a violent downburst. The freak accident also took the lives of banker Jonathan Bloomer, 70, and his wife Judy Bloomer, 71, as well as US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo, and Canadian-Antiguan chef Recaldo Thomas. A further 15 people were rescued following the ship's horror plummet. Last week, chilling pictures showed the Bayesian resurface for the first time in nearly a year as bystanders watched one of Europe's biggest cranes lift the yacht up from 150ft below the water. The Bayesian was then transported about 15 miles along the coast to the port of Termini Imerese. The multimillion-pound vessel was pulled onto a specially made steel cradle at the port. An interim report by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch said the yacht had a 'vulnerability' to lighter winds but the owner and crew would not have known. It added it had 'limited verified evidence' as the criminal probe in Italy had restricted its access. Italian prosecutors are conducting a criminal investigation into the yacht's sudden sinking. At 3.50am on Monday August 19 the Bayesian began to shake "dangerously" during a fierce storm, Italian outlet Corriere revealed. Just minutes later at 3.59am the boat's anchor gave way, with a source saying the data showed there was "no anchor left to hold". After the ferocious weather ripped away the boat's mooring it was dragged some 358 metres through the water. By 4am it had began to take on water and was plunged into a blackout, indicating that the waves had reached its generator or even engine room. At 4.05am the Bayesian fully disappeared underneath the waves. An emergency GPS signal was finally emitted at 4.06am to the coastguard station in Bari, a city nearby, alerting them that the vessel had sunk. Early reports suggested the disaster struck around 5am local time off the coast of Porticello Harbour in Palermo, Sicily. The new data pulled from the boat's AIS appears to suggest it happened an hour earlier at around 4am. Some 15 of the 22 onboard were rescued, 11 of them scrambling onto an inflatable life raft that sprung up on the deck. A smaller nearby boat - named Sir Robert Baden Powell - then helped take those people to shore. The huge £20million recovery undertaking was plagued by delays and more tragedy - after a diver working on the operation died last month. Robcornelis Maria Huijben Uiben, 39, died when working 160ft below the ocean alongside other workers - just days after recovery operations began. This prompted some locals to believe that the sunken ship is "cursed". Floating cranes, remote-controlled robots, and specialist divers amongst other marine experts were brought in to recover the vessel. Palestine Action are not terrorists. The RAF is just grossly incompetent
One can see why the Government is proposing to proscribe Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation. That anyone could enter the RAF base at Brize Norton, one of the most significant we have, and smear red paint on planes was deeply humiliating. Once, the commanding officer of the base would have resigned immediately; the security officer would have been moved to the cookhouse, if he was lucky; and the Defence Secretary would have offered his resignation. But no-one resigns these days, so branding the intruders 'terrorists', as if they were some ruthless group trained to outwit military professionals, with death and destruction their aim, makes them sound all the more formidable, and their victims all the more helpless. It is an unconvincing cover for the sort of grotesque incompetence that characterises our public sector and public services. That was the RAF; the next day it was the Metropolitan Police unable to prevent an epidemic of daylight robbery on the streets of the West End; the next NHS maternity services that humiliate and degrade women giving birth. What Palestine Action, however organised and bonkers and loathsome they are, did was not terrorism: it was vandalism. You might as well call football hooligans terrorists, or the groups of louts who on hot summer evenings riot because they are bored and the police upset them by seeking to restore order. Terrorism is a truly abhorrent, lethal, wicked and repulsive thing: chucking paint over planes and ridiculing the RAF and the Government in the process does not even begin to compare with it. This devaluation of a word with a precise meaning is highly dangerous. Lord (Toby) Young, in his excellent work for the Free Speech Union, has disclosed that Prevent – the increasingly preposterous, Left-leaning body that tries to stop terrorism at its roots – has done research that suggests 'red flags' for spotting potential far-right terrorists are people who like, among other things, Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, GK Chesterton's poems, The Bridge On the River Kwai, The Dam Busters and Yes, Minister. Where do I give myself up? Many of us remember real terrorism, perpetrated by real terrorists: the Birmingham and Guildford Bombings; the Hyde Park Bombings; murders in Manchester, both by the IRA in 1992 and 1996 and, a generation later, an Islamic extremist who killed 22 at the city's Arena in 2017; the massacre on 7/7, which killed 52 innocent people in 2005; and if that's not enough, Lockerbie. I could go on. Does all that utter horror compare with exposing the pitiful security at Brize Norton and slapping paint on planes? Of course not. This seemed to start in 2016, after the abominable murder of Jo Cox, the Labour MP, by Thomas Mair, a recluse and weirdo unknown to the authorities. He was rapidly branded a 'terrorist' by politicians when it became clear he had a deeply unhealthy obsession with the far-right and its doctrines. He was a member of no terrorist organisation. What he did was appalling, but he was no more a terrorist than any politically-motivated psychopath acting alone. Ms Cox's murder came days before the Brexit vote. Those who branded Mair a 'terrorist' (and the authorities rapidly followed suit) were surely not trying to associate him with the Brexit movement – were they? On Friday, four people were arrested over the Brize Norton incident. If convicted, they must suffer exemplary punishment. However, I hope the Government accepts its responsibilities for such pathetic security. And I also hope that in future it reserves the term 'terrorist' for those who really merit it, rather than diluting it for idiotic troublemakers or lethal misfits.
