Why there were no lifeguards on duty when Malcolm-Jamal Warner drowned at Costa Rica beach

New York Posta day ago
New details have emerged surrounding the death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner.
The 'Cosby Show' star died on Sunday at age 54, during a family vacation in Costa Rica.
After Warner's accidental drowning, Playa Grande lifeguards claim they were 'not present' on the beach when the incident occurred due to lack of 'resources.'

'We deeply regret the passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner at Playa Grande. He was swept away by a strong rip current and died by drowning,' Costa Rica's volunteer lifeguard association, Caribbean Guard, said in a statement on Monday via Facebook.
'It all happened very quickly, and although there were people on the beach who entered the water to rescue him, they did not arrive in time. He was pulled from underwater without vital signs, and despite CPR maneuvers being performed on the beach, resuscitation was unsuccessful.'

The Guard explained that Playa Grande is well known by 'local surfers' and is one of their 'most challenging beaches.'
The statement added that there are signs placed along the beach in both Spanish and English 'warning of the danger of death due to drowning.' The Guard shared they had patrolled there 'over the past few years,' but not at the time of Warner's death.

'Due to recent aquatic incidents in Playa Negra, we had redirected resources there and to Chiquita, another iconic beach known for its strong currents,' the statement noted.

The social media post included a message addressed to Costa Rica's President, Rodrigo Chaves Robles, and the government.
'From Caribbean Guard, a volunteer lifeguard association, we make an urgent appeal to the President of the Nation, the national government, the Municipality of Talamanca, and the entire Caribbean community to continue joining forces to minimize this problem, which, sadly, is on the rise ACROSS THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.'

'We do everything within our reach,' the statement concluded. 'We have saved numerous lives in recent years, and if Caribbean Guard didn't exist, the number of drownings would be counted in dozens. We give everything we have to minimize the risks, but without help from the government, clear public policies, and strong support from local business owners, this will continue to happen.'

On Monday, Costa Rican National Police told The Post that bystanders pulled Warner from the water and took him to shore.
The Costa Rica Red Cross made revival efforts, but the attempts were unsuccessful.
Warner's body was transported to the morgue at San Joaquin de Flores for an autopsy. His cause of death is listed as asphyxiation by 'submersion.'

The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) also confirmed the events that took place.

'The victim appears to have entered the sea and was apparently swept away by a current,' they told People. 'The man was rescued by bystanders and taken to shore, where he received treatment from the Costa Rican Red Cross. However, he was declared lifeless at the scene.'
Warner rose to fame playing Theodore 'Theo' Huxtable, the son of Bill Cosby's Cliff Huxtable, in 'The Cosby Show.'

The sitcom ran on NBC for eight seasons from 1984 to 1992.

Warner auditioned for the role of Theo on the last day of the show's nationwide search, and Cosby, 88, selected him, according to Variety.
Warner garnered a 1986 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
'The Cosby Show' also featured Phylicia Rashad (Clair Huxtable), Sabrina Le Beauf (Sondra Huxtable), Lisa Bonet (Denise Huxtable), Tempestt Bledsoe (Vanessa Huxtable) and Keshia Knight Pulliam (Rudy Huxtable).

In 2021, Warner spoke with The Post about the legacy of the series after Cosby's sexual assault conviction.
'I can understand why some people can't watch the show and enjoy it because of everything that's going on now,' he explained. 'But I think … there's a generation of young people who have pursued higher education or have started loving families because of the influence of that show.'
'So it's kind of like, you can't discount its impact on television culture and American culture,' added Warner.

Two months later, Cosby's sexual assault conviction was overturned.
After Warner's run on 'The Cosby Show,' he starred in the UPN sitcom 'Malcolm & Eddie' alongside Eddie Griffin from 1996 to 2000.
Warner then played Dr. Alex Reed on the BET sitcom 'Reed Between the Lines' from 2011 to 2015. He also starred as AJ Austin on Fox's 'The Resident' alongside Matt Czuchry and Emily VanCamp for 96 episodes from 2018 to 2023.

On Monday, Cosby's rep, Andrew Wyatt, told The Post that the actor 'spoke to Phylicia Rashad earlier today and they reminisced about Malcolm.'
Wyatt added that Cosby, who just celebrated his 88th birthday, feels like 'everybody's leaving.'
The comedian told his rep, 'While I was their TV dad, I never stopped being a father to them.'

Cosby also related Warner's death to losing his own son, Ennis Cosby, who was murdered in 1997 at the age of 27.
Hearing the news 'reminded him of the same call he received when his son died,' Wyatt said of Cosby.
Ennis was fatally shot during an attempted robbery while changing his flat tire on a Los Angeles freeway ramp.

Wyatt also shared the touching way Cosby kept his son's memory alive through Warner.
'He started with 'The Cosby Show,' he was a teenager,' he explained to The Post, adding that Cosby gave Warner his upright bass named after his only son in 2016, more than two decades after their long-running sitcom ended.
He passed the instrument on 'so his [Ennis'] legacy would be that he humanized the world,' Wyatt expressed, noting now that Warner's dead, 'he would humanize the world even more.'

The two actors also spoke recently.
'He had just done a concert in Minnesota and called Mr. Cosby and talked about it. They spoke all the time. He said 'Malcolm was changing humanity,'' Wyatt said.
Angela Bassett, who worked with Warner on both 'American Horror Story' and '9-1-1,' penned on Instagram, 'When a special soul like @malcolmjamalwar leaves us far too soon, words fail to adequately describe the unimaginable grief. Malcolm was more than a gifted actor; he was a longtime friend.'

'He carried the weight of cultural legacy with grace, and he always made space for others to shine. His light will remain in our hearts always,' she continued. 'My prayers are with you and yours. Rest in perfect peace until we meet again.'
VanCamp, for her part, shared a throwback photo of the pair on set of 'The Resident.'
'I'm not sure I have the words to express what a gift it was to know you and to work with you. Your thunderous laugh, the bear hugs, our chats about love, family and life. A true family man with so much integrity and an endlessly generous spirit. You walked the walk my friend,' the 'Revenge' alum wrote. 'Sending all my love to your beautiful family and all of those who knew you and were close to you. Beyond heartbroken.'

Virgin OnlyFans star Sophie Rain reveals how much money she's made — despite keeping her clothes on

Blinging in the Rain. Florida OnlyFans star Sophie Rain has boggled minds after revealing the eye-popping amount of money she's earned to date — and allegedly without losing her V-card or even showcasing X-rated material. Since starting her account just two years ago in July 2023, the Miami-based model has amassed a mind-boggling $80,138,033.96, which she showcased in a screenshot. 4 Rain says she plans on splashing out on her farm. Jam Press/@sophieraiin 'Making $80M is unbelievable,' Rain, 20, told Jam Press. 'It's hard to put into words how I feel about it — I'm incredibly blessed and fortunate.' The skinfluencer, who is among the top 0.01% earners on the platform, has made the lion's share of her income from her devoted fans on platforms like Instagram, where she boasts 7.4 million followers. Rain's number one fan is a man named Charley, who showered her with more than $4.7 million in 11 months, she revealed in December. This marks an incredible rags-to-riches saga for the brunette bombshell, who reportedly grew up on food stamps. 4 'It's hard to put into words how I feel about it – I'm incredibly blessed and fortunate,' said Rain while reflecting on her earnings. Jam Press/@sophieraiin 4 Rain joined OnlyFans in 2023. Jam Press/@sophieraiin Most impressively, Rain, a devout Christian who attended mass every Sunday growing up, amassed the mountain of moula while keeping things relatively safe for work. The frisky Floridian forgoes nudity in favor of 'lingerie-bikini level suggestive teasing' or even just 'random videos' of her 'walking around' and doing makeup — she leaves plenty to the imagination. 4 Rain claims she's still a virgin. Jam Press/@sophieraiin The PG porn star already knows where she plans to make it rain. 'I'm planning on adding more animals to my farm and spending time with my cows,' said Rain, who reportedly has a 20-acre spread in Tampa with two cows. This comes after the content creator announced plans to depart the 'Bop House,' the viral $60,000 a month OnlyFans mansion that she shares with cousin Aishah Sofey, 22, Camilla Araujo, 22, Alina Rose, 24, Julia Filippo, 22, Summer Iris, 19, Ava Reyes,19, and Joy Mei, 19. She chalked up her decision to rising tensions with her fellow creators at the veritable Gen Z Playboy Mansion. 'I am looking forward to spending more time there (at the farm) without the pressure of the Bop House,' declared Rain. 'There's been a lot of drama with the girls in the house, and I just don't need that in my life anymore.' She added, 'I make the most money, so I don't need to be in an environment where we aren't all getting along.' Despite her meteoric rise in the adult entertainment industry, Rain somewhat paradoxically remains a virgin, claiming she's saving herself for Mr. Right. 'Yes, I am. I'm waiting until marriage, that's why … I'm single right now,' said the OnlyFans sensation, who has even turned down offers to swipe her V-card on camera.

Farmers, Not AI, Power This Underground Dinner Series

has been writing about bars and restaurants for 20 years for publications including the Chicago Tribune, Time Out Chicago, and VinePair. With a single seating each night and a small crowd, Bayer is able to connect with each guest. While Bayer said he's routinely asked if the goal is to open a restaurant, he's enjoying the level of hospitality he can deliver through the weekly pop-ups for 24 to 30 people. The goal is to keep things fun and casual every step of the way. Word about Bar Berria has primarily spread through Instagram, and when guests book a seat, Bayer is the main contact. 'The personality you see on Instagram, in confirmation emails, in the food, and the dining room is all the same. I'm a human, you're a human, and let's communicate like that. I mean it's not too long before the robots take over,' Bayer says. Bar Berria is a casual-but-intimate dinner series. Aidan Kranz His menu descriptions are often just three words to give him flexibility based on what he gets from suppliers, including Nichols Farm, Mick Klüg, Seedling, and Down at the Farms, or the 32 raised bed gardens where wine events are regularly hosted. 'I planted a lot of things that are looking towards the future, so I got a fig tree, a peach tree, pawpaws,' Bayer says. 'We've got four chickens just for eggs, so when everyone was stressing out earlier this year, we were golden.' So far, Bayer has yet to repeat a dish, and he said he's constantly looking for inspiration, constantly reviewing the weekly lists farmers send him, outlining what products they have available as 'maps for the upcoming menus.' It's how he gets the juices flowing. 'Knowing who grew the produce and combining it with something we fermented 12, 18, 24 months ago is what gets us jazzed,' Bayer says. 'Being able to do that and also share that story with guests is what makes us a little different.' The team is small, with Bayer partnering with Emily Abram, who started cooking for him at the Heritage in Forest Park and went on to serve as executive sous chef at Etta and Dusek's. Avondale Bowl managing partner Jeff Wilson, who worked as general manager of the Heritage, helps with front of house. In addition to offering a six-to-10 course tasting menu, Bar Berria collaborates with other chefs for special dinners. They've included Perilla's Andrew Lim and Thomas Carlin of Dove's Luncheonette and Galit, who were looking to experiment with dishes while preparing to open a new restaurant in Evanston. Bar Berria also hosts family-style dinners featuring Slagel Farms chicken, Publican Quality Bread, salad, and seasonal vegetables. Just don't expect the roast chicken Bayer prepared on Beat Bobby Flay, which he learned from Boka Hospitality Group chef Chris Pandel while working at the Bristol. 'That's how I rope everyone in,' Bayer says. 'You won't be getting the as-seen-on-TV chicken at Bar Berria. This process is based on the Peking duck method. It's a five-day process where we blanch, dry, glaze, season, dry again, and then roast them.' Sieger Bayer sources ingredients from local farms and his own garden. Aidan Kranz Bar Berria's menus are ever-changing. Aidan Kranz All of Bar Berria's meals are BYOB. Beaujolais is the go-to suggestion for the chicken dinners and for the tasting menu. Bayer offers ideas in his confirmation emails like, 'Bring a dope sherry to drink out of a cute ass glass,' or 'Bring a Chenin that's got cool acidity and a nice minerality.' He's in no hurry to get a liquor license because diners are drinking less in general, and he wants to keep the meals accessible. 'We always joke when pouring wine guests bring in. 'Here is a beautiful wine from your cellar. Hope you enjoy it.'' Bayer says. 'We laugh, they laugh, it's great. Having a good time is what Bar Berria is all about. This project is us selfishly getting to do all the things we've wanted to do for years. All the creative goofy shit while not having to answer to anyone but us. 'Not to piss anyone [off], but the industry isn't the same. This isn't the industry that I fell in love with,' Bayer explains. 'It's not the industry that I think people deserve. Profits and bottom lines replaced hospitality and generosity. Bar Berria started as a concept that puts hospitality, generosity, and creativity as the leading charge. Maybe we're dumb for thinking that's what people want. Stay tuned.' Jimmy Kimmel Just Subtly Dragged Donald Trump's Cancellation Threats

Let's do a quick recap of the late-night cancellation drama. So, as you know, Colbert was canceled last week. Then Trump celebrated that. "I absolutely love that Colbert' got fired." Then he made an entire post about Jimmy Kimmel: "The word is, and it's a strong word at that, Jimmy Kimmel is NEXT to go in the untalented Late Night Sweepstakes and, shortly thereafter, Fallon will be gone." "It's really good to see them go, and I hope I played a major part in it!" Wellll, Kimmel responded on Instagram with a repost of Trump's "Truth" or whatever you call it: That was captioned: "I'm hearing you're next. Or maybe it's just another wonderful secret." That "wonderful secret" part is in reference to an alleged birthday card the Wall Street Journal obtained from Trump to Jeffrey Epstein, signed: "Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret." The comment section is a sea of support for Kimmel. "Jimmy Kimmel, I hope you never retire!" one person wrote. Another person said, "I don't think it's the late night hosts who need to go." And Andy Cohen commented with a simple, "she's startin.'"
