Guwahati: Despite socioeconomic challenges, a group of visionaries, led by British-era Assam director of public instruction (DPI) GA Small, tea planter Raibahadur Mahendra Mohan Lahiri, freedom fighter Tarun Ram Phukan, and future Assam CM Gopinath Bordoloi, helped build an educational foundation for Bengali students in Guwahati.
In 1930, as the freedom movement swept India, the then DPI JR Cunningham issued a circular barring students from participating in anti-British activities. They were required to sign declarations or risk expulsion. Many parents refused, sparking protests.
This led to the birth of Assam's first Swadeshi school, Kamrup Academy, in 1930. Soon, student numbers surged at Kamrup and Cotton Collegiate schools. While Assamese and Bengali sections operated separately, the growing population prompted calls for a dedicated Bengali school.
This effort led to the founding of Silver Jubilee Anglo-Bengali High School — now Bengali HS School — in 1936, at Paltan Bazar.
Guwahati's population was around 45,000 in 1935. Alumni Tapas Kumar Sen and Sanjoy Gupta, who remain closely associated with the school, recall that DPI GA Small convened a meeting on Apr 4, 1935, at Gauhati Circuit House. It was attended by education officials and prominent citizens, including Phukan, Kali Charan Sen, Rohini Kumar Choudhury, Bardoloi, Lahiri, Kamakhya Ram Baruah, and Gauri Kanta Talukdar.
Small said the govt could no longer run Assamese and Bengali sections separately at Cotton Collegiate. If the Bengali community opened its own school, the govt would offer support. The proposal was accepted, and land near Paltan camp was allotted. The community raised Rs 15,000 to build the school.
According to Principal Nazrana Rahman Hazarika, "Small laid the foundation stone on Dec 15, 1935, with a silver trowel, in front of a large gathering."
"The construction was completed in four months by Khan Sahib Ida Khan, known for quality work. The school was inaugurated on Apr 28, 1936, by chief commissioner Michael Keane," she added.
Hazarika, who joined as a teacher in 1993 and became principal in 2020, is a descendant of Bagh Hazarika (Ismail Siddiqui), a commander under Ahom general Lachit Borphukan.
Retired banker Uttam Kar, a student from 1966 to 1974, noted the school was named to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Emperor George V's coronation.
After Independence, it became Bengali Boys High School and was upgraded to a higher secondary school in 1965.
The first managing committee had Raibahadur Kalicharan Sen as president and Lahiri as secretary. Scholar Nalini Bhushan Dasgupta was appointed the first headmaster. In its first year, 404 students enrolled — 363 Bengalis, with the rest from diverse communities — underscoring the school's wide appeal. There were 24 Marwaris, seven Manipuris, three Nepalis, four Punjabis, two Hindustanis, and one Madrassi at the schools at that time.

‘Vacate Upper Assam in 24 hours': Amid evictions, Miya Muslims given ultimatums
The Assam government on Sunday launched an eviction drive targeting about 350 Muslim families, most of them Bengali-origin or Miya Muslims, who had been living at the Nambor South Reserve Forest in the Golaghat district. Amid the eviction drive, videos by news outlets showed Assamese nationalist groups going door to door threatening Miya workers to leave Upper Assam. Members of the groups were seen warning Miya Muslims to leave the Sivasagar district in Upper Assam, where ethnic Assamese communities are in the majority. A video by News Live showed Situ Baruah of the Jatiya Sangrami Sena warning a Bengali-origin Muslim man from Hojai district in middle Assam and saying: 'Shut up, you have to vacate Upper Assam within 24 hours.' The Golaghat district administration said that 'encroached areas in Gelajan and 3 No. Rajapukhuri' were cleared on Sunday. The administration said that 350 families were evicted and nearly 1,000 bighas of forest land were reclaimed. 'The eviction drive was carried out peacefully, without any resistance, reflecting the coordinated planning and execution by the authorities on the ground,' the district administration said. A district official told Scroll that most of those evicted were Miya Muslims who had encroached on forest land since the early 1980s. Over 1500 families were evicted and over 4,000 structures were razed in five days. The evicted forest area lies in a contested area on the state's border with Nagaland, called the disputed area belt. District authorities said that in the past five days, 'vast stretches of encroached forest land have been reclaimed, with illegal structures dismantled across key high-density zones including Bidyapur, Pithaghat, Sonaribeel, Doyalpur, Dolonipathar, Kherbari, Anandapur, and Madhupur'. Special Chief Secretary MK Yadav also stated that about 205 families in the Negheribil area under Merapani, located within the Doyang Reserve Forest, have been served eviction notices, with the eviction scheduled to commence from 8 August. The displaced residents have accused the state government of selective targeting during the drive based on religion and ethnic identity, as non Muslim residents of Rengma Reserve Forest were not evicted. In Guwahati too, the non-Muslim residents allegedly encroaching on land were not served with eviction notices, while their immediate Muslim neighbours were issued such notices. Commenting on these allegations, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said his government will not evict the ' indigenous population ' as it doesn't does not consider the "unauthorised occupation" of public land by indigenous people as encroachment. Sarma said the government will continue its eviction drives against encroachments by "suspected foreigners" across the state. "There are two types of encroachments,' he said, according to PTI. 'If indigenous people are living (unauthorisedly), then we don't consider it as encroachment. Those who have come from Bangladesh, we consider only those cases as encroachments.' In Assam, Miyas or Bengali-origin Muslims, are frequently vilified as foreigners or undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh, even though they have proof of citizenship and have been living in the state for generations.

Tipu Sultan laid foundation for KRS Dam, says Karnataka Minister Mahadevappa
Last Updated: Mandya (Karnataka), Aug 3 (PTI) Karnataka Minister H C Mahadevappa on Sunday said 18th Century AD Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan laid foundation for the Krishna Raja Sagar dam in Srirangapatna. Karnataka government's water resource department website says the construction of K R S dam was commenced in the year 1911 during the reign of then Mysore king, Krishna Raja Wadiyar Bahadur, and completed in the year 1931. Renowned civil engineer and Bharat Ratna awardee Sir M Visvesvaraya developed the project, it says. The dam is built across the Cauvery River near Kannambadi village in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya District. At an event on Sunday, Mahadevappa said, 'Tipu Sultan was the first who laid the foundation stone (of the dam) but nobody has the courage to say this. B R Ambedkar has said that those who don't know history cannot create history." Elaborating further, he said there was a mosque on one side and a temple on the other, where Azan (call for Islamic prayer) and the temple bell rings would go simultaneously and Tipu Sultan would listen to both. According to the Social Welfare Minister, Sultan had eradicated Devadasi system, pioneered land reforms and introduced sericulture in India for the first time. 'He was the towering freedom fighter who fought against the colonial British rulers," Mahadevappa said.
