Jakim developing module to curb extremism among foreign workers

KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) is developing a specialised module to curb the spread of radical ideologies among foreign workers in the country.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the initiative would be implemented in collaboration with the Home Ministry and the police to ensure its effectiveness.
He said efforts to counter extremist ideologies, such as those associated with certain groups from Bangladesh, would not only protect Malaysia but also benefit the workers' countries of origin.
"Some of these individuals are suspected of involvement in efforts to destabilise their governments," he told reporters after officiating the Corporate Zakat 2025 event here today.
Mohd Na'im said Jakim has long promoted wasatiyyah (moderation) through seminars, lectures and sermons, in line with the Madani framework.
"We want them to return to the true, moderate teachings of Islam. If we can assist in rehabilitating their ideology, we are not only protecting our country but also helping to prevent threats in their countries of origin," he said.
On July 4, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain revealed that police had dismantled a militant cell involving Bangladeshi nationals, allegedly linked to fundraising and recruitment efforts in support of the Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Bangladesh.
Separately, Mohd Na'im reported that business zakat collection by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP) for the first quarter of this year had reached RM76 million.
Of that amount, RM53 million was contributed by 23 corporate entities, including Tabung Haji, Bank Islam, Amanah Hartanah Bumiputera and Bank Muamalat.
"If more companies embrace zakat as part of their corporate culture, we can help alleviate poverty," he said.

Massacre in Congolese Catholic church kills at least 31 worshippers

An armed group linked to the Islamic State on Sunday killed dozens of worshippers at a Catholic church in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo while they were participating in a prayer vigil. Jul 28, 2025 Credit: chayanuphol/Shutterstock By Walter Sánchez Silva An armed group linked to the Islamic State on Sunday killed dozens of worshippers at a Catholic church in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo while they were participating in a prayer vigil. According to the BBC, members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) stormed a church in the town of Komanda, where they shot and killed the worshippers, then looted and set fire to nearby businesses. Komanda is in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, an area rich in minerals and whose control is disputed by several armed groups. Dieudonne Duranthabo, a coordinator of civil society in Komanda, told the Associated Press: 'More than 21 people were shot dead inside and outside [the church] and we have recorded at least three charred bodies and several houses burned. But the search is continuing.' Aime Lokana Dhego, a local priest, told AFP: 'We have at least 31 dead members of the Eucharistic Crusade movement, with six seriously injured. Some young people were kidnapped; we have no news of them.' On the other hand, Radio Okapi estimated the number of dead at 43. Italy Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Sunday condemned the massacre through his X account: 'I express the strongest condemnation of the attack on a church in Komanda, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where a terrorist group linked to ISIS killed more than 40 civilians.' 'Places of worship must always be preserved and religious freedom must be protected. Italy stands in solidarity with the families of the victims and the Congolese people,' he added. What is the ADF? The ADF emerged in Uganda in the 1990s, according to the BBC, accusing the government of persecuting Muslims, but is now based across the border in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where they regularly attack civilians of all religions, as in Uganda. Vatican News said the ADF is 'responsible for the murder of thousands of people. Two weeks ago they killed 66 people in the Irumu area.' Jamil Mukulu, a Christian convert to Islam, is the founder of the ADF, which in early 2024, according to Vatican News, perpetrated an attack also in the eastern part of the country in which at least eight people were killed, five of them while praying, and 30 others were taken hostage.--CNA

Govt working to bring stranded umrah pilgrims in Jeddah back home

IPOH: Efforts are being taken to ensure the 42 Malaysian umrah pilgrims who were reportedly stranded in Jeddah since last week return to the country safely, says Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) said the government, through the Malaysian Embassy in Saudi Arabia, are making arrangements for the pilgrims. "I am deeply concerned and sympathise with the plight of 42 Malaysian umrah pilgrims who were reportedly stranded in Jeddah since July 25 due to the issue of unavailability of return flight tickets. "The embassy is paying full attention and arranging immediate measures to ensure the welfare and safety of all pilgrims, including efforts to bring them back home safely," he said in a statement on Monday (July 28). Dr Mohd Na'im said the government views such cases seriously and would not compromise on any party that tries to deceive or defraud umrah pilgrims, especially those involving senior citizens and civil servants. "Strict action, including through legal channels, will be taken against those who are complicit or guilty. "Since the beginning of this year, I have repeatedly reminded the public to check the status of companies and Umrah packages offered through official Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry channels, including a special portal and application for checking licensed travel agents," he said. "I call on Muslims in this country to always be vigilant and only choose legitimate, licensed, and registered Umrah operators with the authorities. I hope that such incidents will not occur again in the future," he added.

SST Relief, Foreign Business Rules And Animal Welfare On Dewan Rakyat Agenda

The government's assurance to prevent ongoing construction projects from being impacted by the Sales and Services Tax (SST) and policies governing businesses run by foreign nationals are among the key matters in focus at today's Dewan Rakyat sitting. According to the Order Paper, Yusuf Abd Wahab (GPS-Tanjong Manis) has asked the Works Minister to specify which construction projects are exempted from SST and outline measures to ensure the tax does not disrupt ongoing works. He also queried whether the MADANI Government would consider a grace period before applying SST to the construction sector. Separately, Mohd Hasnizan Harun (PN-Hulu Selangor) will seek clarification from the Housing and Local Government Minister on the policy allowing foreign nationals to operate businesses, particularly in retail. He also raised concerns about premises registered under citizens' names but fully managed by foreign operators, including cases involving the use of a spouse's name. Attention will also be drawn to animal welfare issues, as Wong Chen (PH-Subang) asks the Agriculture and Food Security Minister if a national framework will be introduced to combat stray animal abuse and whether collaboration with NGOs, local authorities and experts is on the cards. Following the Q&A session, two bills – the Cross-Border Insolvency Bill 2025 and Education (Amendment) Bill 2025 – are set for first reading, while the second reading will cover amendments to the Poisons Act, the Offenders Compulsory Attendance Act and validation of ferry fees at Pengkalan Kubor. The second meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Parliament runs for 24 days until Aug 28. Related
