Two-time world champion Grenada's Anderson Peters has been ruled out of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, a World Athletics category A javelin event, due to an ankle injury, organisers said on Tuesday. Poland's Cyprian Mrzyglod, ranked 16 in the world, has been named as Peters' replacement in the final lineup of the one-day competition, classified as a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet, slated to take place at the Sri Kanteerva Stadium in Bengaluru. "Anderson Peters has been ruled out of the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 due to an ankle injury sustained during his last competition. Poland's Cyprian Mrzygłód has been named as his replacement in the final lineup," organisers posted on X.
Peters, known for his explosive throws beyond 90m, a personal best of 93.07m, has two world titles to his name, which he won in 2019 and 2022. He is also a reigning Pan American Games gold medallist. The 27-year-old thrower is the biggest name to miss out on the competition.
Peters is a second athlete who has been ruled out of the competition due to injury. Earlier, India's Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Jena ruled out of the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 due to an ankle injury, with fellow Indian javelin thrower Yash Vir Singh replacing him in the final entry list for the athletics meet.
Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra will headline the competition named in his honour. The Neeraj Chopra Classic is being co-organised by Neeraj himself in collaboration with JSW Sports, the Athletics Federation of India and World Athletics.
The competition features 2016 Olympics gold medallist Thomas Rohler are among the top stars participating in a one-day javelin throw meet in Bengaluru.
The NC Classic 2025 will serve as a crucial qualification event for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo from September 13 to 21, though Neeraj, the reigning world champion, has already secured his spot.

Asiad medallist Arjun among 35 in NADA's latest doping list

CHENNAI: Asian Games medallist in canoe, international medallists and quite a few minors are on the latest list of provisionally suspended athletes. Arjun Singh, a canoeist from Uttarakhand but part of the Madhya Pradesh academy, won the bronze medal at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games held in 2023. The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) released the new list on Thursday. There are about 35 names and at least four are minors from various disciplines — weightlifting, powerlifting athletics, wrestling, boxing and even sports like wushu, judo and canoe. Arjun tested positive for Methyltestosterone, an anabolic steroid that attracts a ban of up to four years for first offence. The 18-year-old also won medals at the National Games as well. Arjun had won the Asian Games medal alongside Sunil Singh Salam at the men's sprint C-2 1000m. What seems even more intriguing is the positive test of one — Kadir Khan. There is confusion about the name because of the date of birth listed as January 1, 2005. Even the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has no intimation about such a failed test. The NADA had collected urine samples from one Kadir on May 13, the day two meet records were broken in 24 hours at the Khelo India Youth Games held in Bihar. However, the date of birth on the World Athletics profile page is January 1 2008. What seems interesting is that another minor in the new list tested positive for the same mephentermine.

Toughest Part Is Training, Gets Very Little Time: Neeraj Chopra

Double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra on Thursday said shouldering the organisational responsibilities and managing his personal preparations at the same time were his biggest challenges ahead of the international javelin event that carries his name. The Neeraj Chopra Classic, which will have a top-class field, is set to take place at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Saturday, and the ace athlete is coming after two highly competitive events in Paris and Ostrava, Czech Republic. The Ostrava Golden Spike competition was on June 24 while the Paris Diamond League was on June 20, and the Indian had won both the events. "The toughest part is the training. We get very little time to train. I competed in Paris and Ostrava and then travelled to Bengaluru, so I will try my level best. We also have to arrange everything together," Chopra said during a felicitation function organised by the Karnataka Olympic Association. "We also have to talk to all the athletes about how to make it better. But everything is going well. We will handle this and also compete. But the biggest goal is to make it (the event) bigger," said Chopra, who also met Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday. The 27-year-old reigning world champion said Bengaluru was the perfect venue to host an event of such magnitude. "I am feeling very good. The way the preparations are going, I am very happy. I thank the sports department, Karnataka Olympic Association, Karnataka government for helping me to organise an event in such short notice. "They helped me a lot. The biggest reason to do it in Bangalore is that it is a very good city. The weather is good." Neeraj hoped that the competition will help Indian athletes, in general, to rub shoulders with big international names and raise their performance. "As I said, we are going to add more events. So our Indian athletes who do well at the global level, will get a chance in India to compete among other good athletes. So, we intend to increase this event further," he added. The 12-man field will have seven athletes from abroad and five Indians, including Chopra himself. Germany's 2016 Olympics champion Thomas Rohler (PB: 93.90m), Kenya's 2015 world champion Julius Yego (PB: 92.72m), American Curtis Thompson (PB: 87.76m), Czech Martin Konecny (80.59m), Barzil's Luiz Mauricio Da Silva (PB: 86.62m), Sri Lankan Rumesh Pathirage (PB: 85.45m) and Poland's Cyprian Mrzyglod (PB: 85.92m) are the foreign competitors. The four Indians, apart from Chopra, are Sachin Yadav, Yashvir Singh, Rohit Yadav and Sahil Silwal. Chopra and some of the participants underwent light training at the Kanteerava Stadium on Thursday. Konecny, Thompson and Rohler were among the foreign athletes who have already arrived here. Chopra's coach and world record holder Jan Zelezny has also arrived.
